3/11/02 Fishing Tip -- Crappie Bonanza

It's that time of the year again when the crappie start their way towards the creeks and the spawning areas of the lakes.  Now is the time to break out the minnows and bobbers and head to the shoreline or creek bank.  On my way back from the lake the last two trips, every bridge was illuminated with the glow of lanterns.  I myself will be out trying to put some fresh slabs on the stringer for a delicious fish fry.  My favorite tactic is to fish at night along the rip-rap of bridges with a minnow type jig fished anywhere from 2 to 3 feet under a pencil cork.  The pencil cork allows me to bob the jig without having to move it from the area I am fishing.  It seems to me that the crappie will be in these haunts from now until late April -- sometimes early May.  Then they start moving back out to deeper water and switch to the summer pattern.  So get out there now and take a little patience with you.  You just never know when they are going to turn on and you will be in non-stop action.
