just heard frome Yankee. some of you know he fished the FLW Cowboy on Toledo Bend today. says he got paired up with a really great guy, John Cox, a pro who grew up down that way. also said that he learned a lot and had a good time. well, the Yank got 7th place as a co-angler and took home some cash. congrats to Yankee. wonder which hat he wore?

Holy Toledo, this had to be a fluke. Thanks guys. Still hasn't really sunk in, but now I'm kickin myself cause my boater really put me in a position to win and I didn't come through. First of all I was fortunate to be paired with John Cox who took me to school in just about every aspect of tournament fishing.

Boat Handling: The Bend was mean and bad in the morning 5-6 foot rollers at take off. Meanest water I've been on in a long time. John handled the boat perfect, we could never really get on plane cause he had to keep adjusting the trim so the front end wouldn't spear the rogue waves. He mainly rode right on top of the wakes of the other boats in front of us. But we still got the snot knocked out of us on about a 30 minute run, caught huge air about 5 or 6 times. My neck still hurts. We passed several other boats that were having alot more trouble handling the rough water.

The Plan: "We're pullin in here and we're gonna pick this area apart all day long." And we did making long casts to every stump, clump of grass, and laydown with a weightless fluke. John wore em out on that thing. We caught alot of young bucks that didn't measure and he just kept saying we just gotta pick through em the bigger fish are in here too.

Intensity: Totally committed and focused he had his limit by ten but said he needed to cull two fish and he did. Never second guessing sticking to the plan kept picking the structure and cover apart.

Screw ups: The young bucks smack the hell outta of it but the bigger fish just barely bumped it. We both missed alot a fish. And a well I broke off a 5 or 6 that would a won it. All right it didn't frickin break off the knot slipped cause I didn't retie after gettin hung up. Yankee f bombs all over the place.

Best Parts: John had a 6 lber on but tried to horse it into the net, the fish jumped, threw the hook and I reached out over the boat as far as I could and snatched it outta mid air, high fives all around.

I only had four fish and he kept saying if you get another fish your gonna win and he worked really hard for me to do it, but it didn't happen.

Its the Irish hat hands down now.

Glad you got a good draw. I imagine that makes the day as a co-angler. Never done that myself.
7th out of about 60 is a job well done.

Thanks Tom. Your right. That's what John said when he said I had a chance to win - I didn't believe him. But he said most of the co's will zero cause they'll get front ended all day. John fished as a co-angler for three years so he was just as focused on me bringing in a good bag and went outta his way to make it happen. Toward the end he caught a keeper that didn't help him at all but would have gave me a limit and he kept sayin wish you would got that one. That's one of the things I learned - being a co-angler is all in the luck of your draw.

Congrats again Yankee!

A good friend of mine fished the boater side and came in 5th and his co-angler came in 3rd I believe. He said the boat ride was not fun at all.

What part of the lake did you fish?

At first I had doubts if we were even gonna make it we took a couple of good ones over the bow. Charles wish I could tell ya where we fished but I couldn't see anything the whole way out, we fished a huge flat about a 30 minute run north from Cypress Bend on the east side of the lake. John told me the name of the cove but I can't remember.

Wooo Weee,
What a day Richard, you made it sound like a true experience, one you'll always remember, and one to learn from..
Now if you could just teach Kay that net maneuver, I'd be grateful.

Congratulations on a finish in the money, what a way to start.. Thumbs up !!!!!

Thaks, Don't think my net technique would work for her, I have a big gut to lay on the edge of the boat and a larger counter balance in back to keep me in the boat. Want to fish the rest of the series but their on Rayburn the same day as Media in March.
