Thought I'd start a new thread on this so the visibility is higher - trying to get more people interested. The Live Well in the front of my boat is round and holds maybe 10 gallons. The one on the back is much bigger and oval. I put a 23in Red and 3 Specs around 18in in it and they all kept fine for several hours. I can keep 2 qts shrimp alive in either and finger mullet do good also. I don't know how these compare to shad though. Note - it would be cheaper for me to buy a 10gal bucket for Mikes boat than for me to haul my boat up there - unless we need my boat at which rate I'll definately bring it. All In A Days Fun!!!

My boat is only good for 2 people, but I would be glad to bring it. My problem is keeping bait alive. I don't have the room for a bait a large bait bucket, but as long as someone in the group can keep bait alive we should be able to get buy with 5 gal. buckets in the other boats. I see my rod is longer than yours.

Not Yet! What days can everyone do it? My schedule is open! We are looking at January 6, 12, 20, or 27. How many boats do we have and how many people do we have? Count me as one person with the boat as an option because I have to tow it from Houston. All In A Days Fun!!!

Personally, I would think later in January would be better from a schedule standpoint. If we need to do it during the week I can probably take off work. I would prefer a weekend though. I have a boat and I am not afraid to use it... I can fit three and we will figure out bait tanks. It would be easier in your boat Dean, but that is a haul... I would plan on leaving it home that trip. Right now it looks like 3 boats and 4 people. Hopefully some of the others will check the site soon and have an interest in this trip. Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Until we set a firm date - I have never cought a stripped bass! What are the techniques and baits (besides shad)? Any one else been successfull? Any pictures to show? All In A Days Fun!!!

Bring your own boat then because there will be beer on my boat. Sorry bro, the only time I fish without beer is during a tournament. May only drink one or two all day, but it will be there if I or you want it. I know you are FOS anyway because the last time I was on your boat we had beer. I'll make a deal with you, you buy the gas and I will buy the beer... Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Some people use slabs or sassy shads to catch fish. Personally I don't mess with them enough to be good at this. I have caught them in dec. on points using slabs but this technique will be long gone by the time we go. The way I rig for live bait is placing a 1 oz bell sinker above a swivel and then a 2 foot leader and hook. I have also seen guys peg the weight with a rubber band. Both will work. I usually just buy common trot line hooks to use for sripers. You need to have a good anchor with a lot of rope. I have also seen guides use a back anchor to help hold the boat in place. I believe this helps keep the lines from drifting around. The key is to get as many rods out as possible. This means a lot of rod holders. A lot of the boats on texoma will have 8 to 12 rod holders. Problem is my boat is not set up for rod holders so I usually have some contraptions on board so I can at least have 3 rods out. And don't think you can just lay them down. They will be gone while your baiting up your next rod. I know this from experience. I see my rod is longer than yours.

Dang Yall - I thought I'd get more response to the "alcohol" reemark than that!! Pardon my ignorance - can someone shed some light on THO? Mike - How many rod holders does your boat have? I'm thinking about getting the Duramax Deseil because my transmission in my Chevy 1500 is starting to whine and the boat is too much weight for it. Anyone know anything about the Chevy Duramax? Well Dean, it depends on how many people are in the boat.... I'm good for one rod holder because my other hand will be holding a beer... As far as built in rod holders... none. BTW: I would reccommend the Cummins long before I would the Duramax. But, I would caution you that owning a diesel is significantly higher on the maintenance than regular gas trucks. Lifetime is longer, more power, etc... It just isn't cheap to maintain -- plan accordingly. Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

You can't go wrong with any of the big 3 diesels. It will just come down to personal preference (and $$). The Duramax's are several thousand dollars more than Ford or Dodge. They are the best driving, best riding of the three, but I don't see several thousands difference. Just my opinion! Maintenance is higher, but not by much if you do it yourself. An oil change for my Power Stroke generally runs about $60 on average at oil change places or the dealership. Since there is so much oil in a diesel (15 quarts) and the diesel runs so much cooler than a gas engine, I don't change the oil as often. Usually change it between 5,000 and 6,000 miles rather than the 3,000 for gas engines. But, I can go to Wal Mart and buy 4 gallons of Rotella T oil for $6.25/gallon for a total of $25.00. Filters run about $10.00. I can change my oil for $35.00 every 6,000 miles. That's $17.50 per 3,000 miles. How much do you pay for an oil change on a gas engine every 3,000 miles?!?! $19.99?!?! Just a thought..... (Message edited by rudey on November 18, 2004) Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.

I don't have the oil changed my gas engine every 3k... More like 6-7k (same on our cummins). I drive 80% hwy if not more and rarely in stop & go traffic. My last truck was at ~132,000 miles and still running great when I traded it in. Besides, the Hemi came with 7 years free oil changes... You are right tho Rudey, changing it yourself is much cheaper. A striper trip sounds great to me. I haven't done much live bait fishing because I haven't been able to catch enough bait and when I catch them they die pretty quickly. Our "live well" is square and shad must be kept in a round tank. Did I miss it, or have we decided on a lake yet? Tawakoni seems to be best in March (at least from the pictures they had in the marina a few month back). Have boat, will travel! I should be on 2nd shift by then and I should also have a 3 day weekend once a month. |

Keith, this trip is targeted for January on Texoma. I fully expect that you and Audra will be there. We are still working on the keeping bait alive thing. As far as I am concerned, if I can catch a few on live bait I will spend the rest of the time trying with artificial... Do you know your January schedule yet? Certianly let us know so that we can nail down the date. It would not be the same without you and Audra there -- someone has to catch the smallest fish (Audra)... BTW Keith, how is Audra? I have been away from TBH and everything else and I never really heard much after the surgery that revealed there was not the extra pathways. Is she ok? Keith - Hope you can make it! What kind of boat do you have? OK - So no one is going to tell me bout THO! I guess I'll just forget it! I have another friend here who has been fishing Texoma for 15yrs in the winter. He is interested in leaving Houston on Thursday, and we would stay at a camp ground near the lake. We could fish Thursday afternoon, Friday, and Saturday. I am still considering hauling my boat there because Mikes boat seems to be "insufficient". Does a Friday make it easier for everyone? BTW - Mike - I am taking the family to Estes Colorado tomorrow to go skiing and hiking - first time! We will be flying out at 9:00am. I'll try to take pictures - but I am not too reliable about that. Regarding the deisel - I am still pondering it. I like the F250 but it would cost me $30K to trade my Chevy in. Anyone interested in a Chevy Silverado LT package? They don't want to give me squat for it! It is a nice truck with extra's!! All In A Days Fun!!!

Audra has been doing fine since the surgery. They didn't find anything to fix, but so far she hasn't had any more problems. I have a 21' Center Console with a 200 Yamaha. We live about an hour and a half from Texoma. If I am off work, we'd love to join in. |

I have been kinda removed from most everything with the end of the semester drawing near -- reason I am not at the lease this weekend. Hey, thanks, Mike!! I would love to make the fishing trip in Jan. I am having surgery on my right wrist a week from Tuesday, on the 7th. I will be in a wrist splint for 4 weeks. So, if we could plan for mid-late Jan, that would be much better for me. And, remember, Y'all need me...to catch the smallest fish! "Men and fish are alike. Texoma has no minimum length limit but you can only keep one or two over 20 inches. I will of course freshen my memory on the regs before we go. Also note that we will need to buy the special Lake Texoma fishing license since it is a border state. The other option is to buy an Oklahoma license to go along with your Texas one. The one thing that I never could figure out was that texas has a limit of 15 with 1 over 20" and oklahoma has a limit of 10 with 2 over 20". So if you fish on the Oklahoma side and then come back across to texas side, which limit do you use. I usually don't keep enough to worry about it but it always puzzled me. I see my rod is longer than yours.

I thought I had read that they changed this year to be the same as the Oklahoma regs. This is out of the TPWD Outdoor Annual for 2004-2005 -- Lake Texoma Exceptions

Border lake, it don't work that way. Besides, you are not hurting for fish. If you want to catch a lot, throw more back. I'll be happy with my 2 over 20" and few unders to make a couple of meals for the family. I absolutely hate to clean fish but I love to eat them.
