Hi. We're new to fishing in Texas. We don't have a boat right now. Where could we fish from shore in Texas and stand a chance of catching some nice fish? I'm used to fishing for trout(not fly fishing) and crappie; but I'm willing to try for any kind of fish. Is there anyplace within a half day's drive or so of San Antonio that would work? I've gotten the impression from our friends at the local watering hole that fishing from shore is next to impossible here.....Surely that can't be true? What recommendations do you all have? We've been working way too hard and desperately need to get away for a couple of days and throw a line or two into the water. I need to add that my husband and I aren't kids anymore; so a mile or so hike through the brush to get to a fishing spot probably won't work fo us. Thanks in advance for your help! |

First of all let welcome you to FTN. It's great to have you here. I fished the bank for MANY years before I got a boat. Although I catch many more with a boat, It by no means says that you can't do some great fishing from the bank. I'm way north of you almost to the Oklahoma/Texas border. But on Ray Roberts lake you can do some great fishing from the bank. Also if your in to camping, you can spend the night in a state park and do some fishing inside there also. I'm sure if you find a lake down in your woods you would do fine. The crappie are just about to turn on, the bass are about to spawn, and the white bass are about to run in to the rivers to do their thing. It's a great time to be on the water OR on a Texas bank right now. Good luck Shaun I can do everything through him who gives me strength. Phil 4:13

Thank you! Down here many of the lakes have really steep banks....I don't think Ray Roberts is too far for us to travel! |

Welcome to the ramp. Bankfishing in Texas can be a tough go for bass or crappie. Would you be interested in catfishing? I can help you out with a recipe for that if you're interested. Thanking the Lord, all day long --- tomc

Believe it or not if your still into the trout Canyon lake spillway Guadalupe River is not to far and is one of the best trout streams in the country and has bank access. Better to rent a canoe. The Guadalupe River is listed as one of the 100 top trout streams in the United States. In addition to fly fishing for rainbow and brown trout on the tail-waters of the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake, anglers can catch largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, Guadalupe bass, white bass. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guadalupe_River_(Texas) |

Welcome to "The Ramp" Prpockets... When I was mostly bank fishing I spent a good amount of time fishing below the dams for sandbass (whitebass), crappie, and catfish. But this time of the year I would spend most of my free time focusing on major creeks that feed into lakes with healthy whitebass populations. One that comes to mind is the Yegua Creek north of Lake Somerville. White or yellow road runners would fill a stringer on any given day when they are running up the creek to spawn. I also spent a lot of time chasing bass at Bryan City Lake just north of Bryan, Tx. Spinnerbaits and dark colored lizards worked there. Lake Somerville has a bunch of shoreline access and I would walk the accessible shorelines with spinnerbaits and plastics casting to any structure I could reach for bass. Hopefully the advice you have gotten so far is helpful and can get you on some fish. Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish
