OK,
I've noticed my fishing buddy, in the front of the boat catches a lot more when we start worm/jig fishing.
So I've been fishing with $50 All Star rods from academy. I'm wondering if it's me or the rod that I'm using. He's using a G-Loomis rod.

I don't have $300 to throw down on a rod. Is there another option?
I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

Is there that much difference in feel in the rod that I'm using and the more expensive ones?

I mean is it possible that he's feeling more bites while he's worm fishing than I?

What brand rods are yall using for worm/jig fishing?
I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

I've used cheap rods and I've used really expensive rods. The really expensive rods seem to be lighter which will reduce fatigue, I do think they are more sensitive.

However, the lighter and more sensitive the rod the less durable they are.

I've been using Falcon Cara the last few years and have been pleased with the over all performance.

Buy what you can afford and have confidence in.

GM, Charles was spot on...I used to only use rods like you are using but once I did try an expensive rods I was hooked...I also use the Falcon Cara's and they are so light and sensitive it make fish much more fun...You take a 7ft Cara worm rod with flouro line and a tungsten bullets weight and what you'll feel will amaze you!!

Minner yankees is cheap been using walmart $50 dollar reels and the 2 for one rods from Acadia Outdoors in Irving for the last few years good rods, good price with a lifetime guarantee. Went through 3 cheap reels in a year now I got 3 revo's and a custom worm rod. After fishing the Flw tourn on Toledo Bend noticed that the dude in front wasn't just catching more than me he was just plain sick throwing the exact same weightless fluke. So got me a custom weightless worm rod from Mike Hendrix at fun n sun. Best thing to do is get at least one upper end rod and see for yourself. Or make your partner let ya use his. In my opinion which-don't mean jack - is your worm rod should be a higher quality rod kinda same as like a good fly rod thing ya know. Or it could be that the dudes we fish with are just better fishermen. Naw that can't be it. Its gotta be the expensive stuff --- right.

I have 7 of the Shimano Crucials and they are light and not that expensive. $125 . Even Ozzie Loves my Jig rod setup. It floats. Never tried Cara's so I can't compare.

I'm still getting by with Falcon originals. You can get them on sale at Academy for $69 if you watch the sale papers. They make a great worm rod. I beleive it's model # FC-5-166. It used to have the Mark Davis signature on it but I think it has changed. It's also great for throwing spinnerbaits.

Falcan also make a LowRider which is heavier but still a good rod. The Shimano Crucials are nice rods.

I have fished with Ozzie, Hawghunter08 and several other people who are far more dedicated and skilled than I am but I firmly believe that a lighter more sensitive rod, reel and line combination will catch more fish.In my case it is the fatigue that begins to play head games with me.I have invested in lighter equipment and so far it has paid off.

In my opinion, there is no substitute for he more sensitive/lighter fishing rods.

BUT

I think it is most important that you learn the difference between structure and a bite. Fish will pick a bait up and spit it back out more often than not. The smaller fish tend to be more aggressive and will take the bait and run with it. Learning when to set the hook will do more for your catching than anything. How many times on a fishing trip have you made the statement, "I think that was a bite!"

With the more sensitive rods, you can feel the little differences and know better when to set the hook on a fish instead of into a stump. But, if you are use to the feel of a less expensive rod and can make those determinations then save the bucks.

The key is feeling the bites. The more expensive, more sensitive, lighter rods, etc... help to shorten the learning curve of being able to feel the difference between a bite and just moving thru cover.

In my opinion, keep what you have and put more focus on learning. When in doubt, set the hook. Hooksets are free (for the most part) and over time you will come to learn what is a bite most of the time and find yourself boating more fish.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Well I went to Academy last night to check out rods. I looked at the higher end Allstars, Also at the castaways, and then I looked at the Falcon Cara rods. Man the Falcon rods were so much more sensitive!!! I couldn't believe the difference. They carried a $179 price tag though. Which i thing is the market that I'm looking at.
I'm going to make a trip down to Bass pro this weekend and check ot the St Croix, and the G- Loomis before I throw down the $$$.

I bought a new Falcon Low Rider off Ebay for just over $100 shipping included. You have to be careful
regarding the shipping because a fishing rod is something that takes special handling & packaging and some sellers really stick you for Xtra $'s to pay for it.

Minner,

There's a lot of merit in what PQ say's.

Did I say that ???????

If I couldn't fish with the rod's I currently use.
I would look hard at the E21 Carrot sticks, impressive to say the least for the $$$ jack.

It's been my observation the man/women with a sensitive rig-upper end rod/reel combo as a whole will have a definite edge.
Stupid is as stupid does, I was very hard headed about that for decades.
I truly believed it was the man more than the equipment. Not so, it's a combination of the two.
As your skills develop so will your need for better gear. That will make whats good-greater.
Be weight conscious of the set-up, the lighter the better. You DONOT give up strength for weight and sensitivity (that is a total misconception)

If in your price range:: Look to the reels that are a proven success, Shimano, Revo, Diawa all weighing in at under 7.0 oz's and match those with a rod weighing in 5-6 oz's and you won't believe what you can feel.
May times I've seen people set the hook on an empty bait, because they felt the bass drop the bait not when it picked it up.
*The deal is, to feel them before they feel you.*
Personally I use Loomis and Shimano mg 50's and Core mg 100's for almost everything. But that's me..
Use what you can, and forget the rest ...JM2C's

That be the center of the finger lakes man. You got whatever ya can handle within an hour. Sodus Point and the Oswego River on the big pond are great steelhead, brown trout and salmon tribs., Oneida lake smallies, lm, walleyes, more woodsy stream trout on all the streams that flow outta the southern ends of the finger lakes. Plus its just down right beautiful in the fall.

Well, After fondling EVERY fishing rod Bass pro had I ended up with a Kistler.
What a difference a real rod makes.

I fished the Lake Texoma tournament Saturday and we got our limit.
My back is hurting, because for once I was having to carry my partner.
He caught one keeper and I caught the other four.I caught a lot of 13 1/2- 13 3/4" that I couldn't stretch LOL........

I was feeling things that I have never felt before. It was a awesome experience!!
We only got 12.87 for a total, but non the less it was a very cool to be able to "Feel" the bottom!
One of these days I want to start fishing the big boys tournaments :-)

I feel like I'm getting better all the time with bass fishing.Partly because of ya'lls unselfish input. Thanks again for your help

Oh Skeeter,
You were right about those Carrot sticks.I loved them. I had them go back to look for a worm rod but it was either a 6' or a 7' 3".
To short, and to long for me. He said they would be in in another weekend. But I just didn't want to wait.
The kistler is 6' 10" and fits me like a glove..:-)

Congrats on the limit in your tourney and glad you were able to notice the difference. Like I said before, the higher end rods will shorten the learning curve on feeling the bite. You will also notice less fatigue over time.

I have a 6'9" Kistler Mg that I have been throwing spinnerbaits on if you are interested. Better yet, I have a Hendrix IM-8 MB782 I'll sell you. I have never even put a reel on the Hendrix.

There is nothing wrong with the rod. It was a replacement rod for one that broke. Since I already have 3 MB782 casting and 1 in a spinning in use, I have never put a reel on this one. I could use a new reel so I would be willing to sell this one...
