Corey's mare that she purchased last year turned out to be pregnant. The previous owner denied the possibility but he was wrong. Connie worked from home today (well actually from the barn ) because she thought that the foal would drop any time. It never happened during the day but when she fed the horses tonight she came running back in and told me she was sleeping in the barn because the mare was dripping milk. So she pulled her truck in the barn, put the cot in the back of it, and rolled out her sleeping bag. She called me from the barn just before midnight and instructed me to get the kids up because the mare's water broke. Jessica opted to stay asleep but Corey, in a sleepy haze, crawled out of bed and we headed to the barn just in time to see the feet poking out. Thirty minutes later the baby finally squeezed out with a plethora of disgusting sounds coming from both ends of that horse.... I attempted to take pictures without the flash but it did not yeild the images I had hoped to capture so I turned on the flash and took 2 pictures then left the mare alone to get her baby off the ground and nursing. With the baby up and standing and our neighbor (a large animal vet) by my wifes side, I excused myself to come in the house. Stephanie (vet), can handle anything that may come about so Connie and Corey will probably be in the barn with the new addition for the next couple of hours. Here are the quick shots I took tonight. I cropped them down to get rid of the stuff you probably don't care to see... Momma and baby shortly after she broke free of the sack: A few minutes later. That is too cool! I'll be sure to show Shea these pictures tonight. All she talked about on the way home the other night is "their horse is gonna have a baby"! |
