Simek and I headed to my place in Seguin this weekend to do a little turkey and hog hunting. I had also picked up some coon traps cause I was tired of seeing trail cam pics of the coons eating all my corn. After a quick stop in Luling to pick some bait for the traps I got to the farm around 5 on Friday evening. I checked the trail cam pictures at two of the feeders and set the coon traps at the one that had the most activity. Simek rolled through the gate around 6:30 and we made a drive around the place looking for hogs and coming up with a game plan for Saturday.

After that we drove into Seguin had some dinner and hit a few of the local bars in town for a few more beers. Saturday around 9:30am we roll back through the gate and decide to head up to the house 1st to put some beers in the fridge. As we are driving we notice some hogs on the clear cut for the power line. Wind is wrong but we decide to go ahead and try to put a quick stalk on them. Walking up we spook the hogs into the brush but we keep walking down the power line since we can hear the hogs in the brush. A sow makes the mistake of coming out about 50 yards from us and the 444 makes quick work of her. After the shot about 20 more hogs run across the clear cut, I get off one more shot but missed. We walk up to the sow and have to put a finishing shot into her. She is a good sow ~80lbs or so. Simek does a good job of cajun dressing the sow to grab the straps.

After a quick run up to the house to put the beer and the newly acquired backstraps in the fridge we head to the back of the property to do some turkey hunting and check the coon traps. We checked the traps and 3 coons out of 6 traps. We decide to do some calling 1st to see if the turkeys would respond before taking care of the coons. After calling for awhile and not getting any response we went to work on dispatching the coons and resetting the traps. As you can see from the pics the late start we got that morning we missed a chance at a turkey at that feeder.

if you look close you can see a coon the live trap. There are 5 leg traps around the area also and we caught 2 coons in those but you can't see them in this pic.

We dispatched the coons.

and rebaited the traps for that evening

Had a buddy of mine and his son show up around noon or so on Saturday to help site some guns in and let his kid shoot a bunch of shells through a .22 rifle. We got my new 22-250 sighted in along with the eotech on my new AR-15. Brady killed some paper with his .22 also.

Me and Bob and Brady decided to guard the house in case the turkeys attacked and Simek headed out in search of the turkeys again. He setup in a Double bull blind near the same feeder again. He called (slept) for a while and finally around 6:14 had a turkey show up.

Didn't take Simek long to put the hammer down.

He shows back up at the house to show off his prize.

Simek makes quick work of cleaning the turkey

We make another run through the property in search of hogs but didn't see any. We head back into Seguin to cook some steaks on the grill and recover from the long day. Sunday morning we are back at the farm to try and call in some turkeys again and check the coon traps. We setup in an area and get a few gobblers responding but can't get them to come in. We think they hung up at the neighbors fence line. We go check the coon traps and we had caught 4 out 6 traps that night. We dispatch the coons.

We do a little more calling for the birds and get some hens to respond but no gobblers. We decide to call it a weekend. We ended up with 1 hog, 1 turkey and 7 coons.

Thanks again Wes for opening the gates of Capote to me. Like I said, I have not seen the farm so green in a long time.

For the record, Wes is hell on coons!

I'm guessing it was Simek's idea to "Spoon" the coons.... harharhar....

Looks like some fun times were had at Capote... Still not sure why Simek wants to spend his time chasin those corn buzzards but it's a win-win for all (except the corn buzzards)

Good job on the coons... They have been working on overtaking Capote for some time and this should help thin the herd a little... :-)
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Don't be a hater Wade... Not my fault you didn't make it out. We did enjoy giving you updates on all the fun you were missing though :-) You will be happy to know that the BBQ in Luling was not that good this time though.

PQ just the way they landed when we took them out of the traps. 7 down, 100's to go. I think I had 10 coming into that feeder every night. I need to get back down there and run the traps again. I am sure the 7 have already been replaced by another group.
