David and I hit PINS for a Saturday night recharge. We managed to scrounge up a few choice baits, wading the guts casting arty's in gin clear surf. Made a few sets.....running the 4th gut and 3rd guts with a pair of sticks. The silence was broken around 2 am. My setup crossed David's, both rods went off like a fire alarm. As we both stood, battling a pair of rods I realized my fish was David's fish. So after much work working our dual hook-up, I managed to clear my rig allowing David to fight the fish. With only David's line hooked up, my extra 65lb test pulled off the tandem, we work north up the sand 400 yards before I spot a dorsal cutting the wade gut. This hammerhead fought to the death...as they typically do. So we steaked this one up.....fired up the grill Sunday afternoon for a quick taste and all I can say is "TWO THUMBS UP!" I had a second shark hooked up just before sunup. The second shark pulled like a freight train before cutting me off with his tail. I was fishing one of David's 6ft steel leaders and apparently it wasn't quite long enough for this fish. I typically leader up with 10ft steel, after that I don't know if I really want to work that hard. Scenes Sunday morning at sunup. David's Hammer

Thank you! Redskeeter I used a Canon 50D with an 300mm Image Stabilized F/4 L fixed prime lens (Heron-Gull shots), Sigma 18-50mm F/2.8 Macro (the dorsal fin shot) and an Olympus 770SW waterproof Point & Shoot (David's shark pic). |

Sounds like another great time at PINS Rob... It goes without saying that the photos are top quality bud. A quality photo takes more than a good camera, it also takes talent to see the image before the shot is taken. You definately have the knack for finding the shots and then capturing them. Since you have the 50D now, do you have any camera bodies you want to get rid of? Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Thanks Rob, I have got to get a 300mm lens. I'm shooting the Nikon D60, love it, but I need some bigger lens to reach out further. Nice shot's, thanks again KBD Fishing

Oz, a "gut" is the deeper water between the sand bars. Typically the first gut is knee deep or less depending on the tide and then it gets progressively deeper. The third gut where we go in Galveston is neck deep on high tide and the 4th sand bar is waist deep. Most of the sharks I catch there are in the 4th gut (between the 4th & 5th sand bar). Hope this helps... Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Thank you guys! PQ, I'm running with a pair of cameras now and it makes quick setups on fast moving stuff easier to pull off. I'm pushing things as far as I can and every now and then I get lucky. Here's why I picked up the 50D

That is the exact reason I wanted the 40D (6.5 fps).... James Overstreet with ESPN has the 1D and we were shooting side by side and the images he captured were fenominal compared to mine. Not to mention all of the action shots that I could not get unless I snapped the shot with absolute perfect timing. What were your camera settings for those shots? Full auto? Auto Focus? Full manual??????? One day, I will have my high end camera with high fps and be able to capture those shots that make photography rewarding. Great shots Rob... Thanks for sharing them. Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Mike I shoot everything in manual mode. It's easiest to pre-expose (the scene) manually and then ride the light meter adjusting on the fly (thumb wheel control). Over time you start figuring out each lens and it's little sweet zone (lighting conditions, exposure points etc.). I've found shooting a tad on the under exposed side pops colors better on my Canon gear. Holding down the shutter half-way, the camera shows a light meter display, with the middle mark being a balance between dark and light (the Canon's lean hard on light...sometimes too much). I typically move the light pointer down just a nod below center on most shots, controlling glare and white light. Action shots, critters and shots with movement, I typically pre-set the camera at ISO 400 - 1000. 400 on bright days and higher for darker scenes (first hour after sunup and last hour before sundown etc). From there I try to work with a wide lens aperture, as far open as I can push it and then make adjustments to cover the the light meter to expose a click or two down from middle. Each lens and body combo has it's own little sweet zone and over time you learn what those performance zones are between each combo. Here's a lot of my stuff online. www.robzabroky.com Check out the turkey shots. I got into them thick this year and many of the whitetail shots are South Texas or here in the Hills. Some of the Hill Country bucks are absolute bruisers. Mike....let me know if you want someone to cover a tournament along the way, I'm game to ride and shoot to cover. Got a few long range lenses we could put to good use covering the action from distance. Always looking forward to shooting things I haven't shot before...a good old Texas sized Bass tournament would be pretty cool. (Message edited by atthewall on June 22, 2009) |

Here's a couple of turkey scenes, two different birds, shot with the 50D. It's literally like shooting video, one frame at a time. Turkey number two belts out a healthy gobble. http://atthewalloutdoors.com/videos/wildturkey.wmv I'm a firm believer in Frames Per Second now. It's allowed me to shoot freely without worry of missing a shot due to cycle speed. |
