BB,

I just got back Tuesday nite myself. Did ok on the birds but did not see a deer that I felt deserved a dirt nap. Still had a great week visiting with old friends. Some HUGE bodied deer up there. Saw a pic of a upper 160's " bow kill by a friend while I was there.
Love to fish and hunt.

The weather was pretty nasty the week before and week of Thanksgiving. Deer just did not move much during bowseason. I did shoot a button buck (thinking it was a doe) and lost a doe. I came back to South La for 5 days and went back to Ks for rifle season. Killed another button buck. Us Coonies killed 9 anterless deer all together (not having buck tags) and three more antlered deer killed by our Ks residents group. Bird hunting was excellent for the third week I was there. I did very little bird hunting the prior two weeks I was there mainly due to weather but also due to I was chasing the deer pretty hard. I will post some pictures later.

Some Pictures from third week I was there:
My buddy Jake's first deer. What a dandy mule deer. He will have a hard time beating this one even though he lives in Ks.Could not beat the smile off of his face that day!

Deer killed by local who hunts with us. Would have been nice 10 if main beam on left side would not have broken off. What a beast. Not the best picture. Was already shot and hanging by time I arrived the Friday evening.

A smaller 8 for this area.

Hey bigun, does your group hunt public or private land. Also how hard is it to get a buck tag up there. My brother and I have thought about putting in for a buck tag. From what I hear there is just as much public land as there is private. I was just curious what you did
I see my rod is longer than yours.

We hunt all private land with a little walkin area. Three years ago you could basically get permission to hunt anywhere but that leasing CRP ground has really become the thing and getting harder and harder to find places to hunt. My family are originally from the area and my dad is now retired and lives between La and Ks. He helps out some of the local farmers in the summertime getting us permission to hunt places.

Getting nonresidents buck tags are lottery and have to be applied for in May. Just depends on unit you want to apply. Archery is statewide lottery and much harder to get. Matt (Picou's neighbor) has applied for archery permit two years in a row and denied both times. I have had friends apply for rifle tags wanting to go with me and never got tag. They are pretty hard to get in most units other than buying from people who own land which are usually quite expensive. Ks allows resident landowners to apply for nonresident tags and sell them for any price they can get to any one who will pay for them. Up to the first 50% designated to the unit go to residents. Talk about a sham they have set up. I'm lucky and can have hunt own land permit transfered into my name from grandmother's land. We mainly shoot does just due to cheaper and they are readily available due population. You can buy anterless tags (one in some units, 4 in other units) over counter for $21. We are going to bird hunt anyway and doe tags are just added bonus time to hunt something in afternoons.

I think there is quite a bit of public land and walk in areas to hunt but not a lot in Unit 5 where I hunt. I think most of it in Western and southeastern Ks just due to wild country and lot of it hard hunting. The area I'm from is mainly farmed land with little wilderness other than some CRP grass and almost all privately owned. Check out the Kansas Wildlife and Park site and look into walkin hunting and Managements area. If you email them they will send you both books for next year.

Great information. Sounds like the odds of my brother and I getting drawn for the same year is slim to none. May go ahead and put in just to see what happens. Looks like it wouldn't be to hard to sell the tag if I decided not to go.

Texfisher, I did not think about this or misled you a little. You have an option to apply as a group (up to 4 people this year). If you and brother put in as a group, you stand a better chance of getting drawn (see below) plus either you both will get tag or neither will get tag.

If you want to go one day I recommend start thinking about where you may want to huntif rifle hunting and narrow down county/unit in and start applying due to you get one preference point every year you apply and don't get tag. It is suppose to help your chances each preference point you get. The way KDWP explained it to me is a group is considered one application but count against total permits for # given out (ie, I questioned one year why their records showed only 100 (#'s just for example) applications turned in for 120 tags in unit I hunt but my friends were denied tags: explained 100 apps actually amounted to 250 people).

I don't think it is as hard to get Rifle permits in certain units/counties in southwest and east counties. It is hard to get them in Unit 5 which is area I hunt apparently though.

You can't sell your tag once you get them. Only resident landowners can apply and sell nonresident tags.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

It originally started out that resident landowner could apply for nonresident tags and sell it to someone and it was valid anywhere in state. THis hunting season they changed it where it was only good for same unit owned land in. And I heard they are changing rules on resident landowners apply for nonresident permits again next year where they have to let hunter buying them hunt their land only. This may help nonresidenets get more tags due to many of the landowners applying for tag would get just to make money and really had no land to deer hunt on. This is just what I heard (and you know how that is) and have not seen it on paper.
