Well, with the hunting season coming to a close in the next several weeks, my mind switches back to fishing. In the past, I would duck hunt until late January and then start fishing but since my dog died a few years back I do not duck hunt anymore. That being the case, it is about time for me to start planning my pre-spawn bass fishing adventures.

In the past when Wes lived up here, we would start off fishing on Monticello in late January and every February. Then the spring sand bass run would start and we would hit the creeks for some light tackle moving water action. As that would be winding down we would start looking for crappie in the shallows and then top off the spring with the tail end of the bass spawn on Lake Fork missing most of the crowds.

Well, those days are long gone and I find myself spending all of my late winter and early spring chasing bass on either Purtis Creek or Lake Fork -- neither a power plant lake. I am looking to get back to the old days and hit some power plant lakes this late winter and try to catch some more of those early bucket mouths.

I still want to hit Purtis a couple times this year because it is very difficult to avoid the lake that has yielded me my 2 largest bass to date(11.36 & 9.75). But I have this strong desire to flip a blake/red flake lizard in the grass line at Monticello on a late January misty 32 degree morning with the rod's eyes freezing up.

It's getting close to fishin time again... :-) Anyone else fish power plant lakes in late winter?

I've never fished on one, but we only live about 30 minutes from Monticello. Maybe we can make a group trip out there this winter.

Let me know if you need a partner. I'm off every Thursday, Friday and every other Saturday. I would be game for Monticello or PC. I haven't fished Monticello in about 4 years and I haven't been on PC since the early 90's. By the way I had a pretty good hunt in Mason. I posted some pictures on TBH under hunting reports. It is titled success in mason.

I'll go check it out at TBH.

We will do some fishing on both Tex. I would prefer to fish Monticello on a nasty day because we have always done significantly better on those types of days. Blue bird skys have proved to be tough days on Monticello. I think the reason is that the water cools off some on those nasty days and the fish get really active. When the weather is bright and shiny the water warms even more than it already is and the fish slow down.

I wonder if I can still remember how to drive there... It has been at least 4 years since I have been there.

Looks like it has been a while Rudey... We got room if you want to join us on Monticello in early February or late January.

The way we use to do it was trolling motor until we got bit. When one person hooked into a fish the other would throw the anchor out. We would fish that spot and usually pick up a few more right there. When we went about 20 minutes or so without a bite we would pull up the anchor and keep working the grassline until another fish and then repeat the previous actions.

Most of the time we also had a half dozen water dogs in the boat and would throw them out free spooling. Usually all we caught on dogs was catfish and they would get a boat ride home to the frying pan.

Ewwwwww.....you eat Monticello fish?!?!

That's nasty, right there!! They taste funky, like eatin' a piece of deep fried lignite or something.

The waterdogs work great on both bass and catfish. We had several "holes" close to shallow water where the bass were, I guess, staging. We'd sit on these one spots for a good while with waterdogs AND big shiners. Tore 'em up!

Never tasted anything wrong with the monticello catfish that I can remember. :-)

We never fished on the other side of the bridge, we always stayed in the main lake and had several 25 - 35 fish days. It just sucks making that drive back home after fishing all day.

I am looking forward to getting back out there and seeing if what worked several years ago still works. From what I remember, most people headed to the other side of the bridge and we always caught fish on the ramp side of the bridge so we never went the over there.

Heck, I am just looking forward to going fishing again... :-)

I used to fish the banks back by the railroad bridge and always had pretty good luck. I also did pretty good fishing the coves from the boat ramp to the bridge. The only drawback to fishing past the highway bridge is the durn stumps. Those things are just about impossible to manuever through. They will really test your patience sometimes.

We always shot straight across the lake and fished from the dam to almost the bridge. It just depended on how good the fishing was that day on how close to the bridge we would get. Some days we wouldn't make it past the second cove before noon. There were definatley holes that were more productive than others, but we still caught fish in almost every inch of water on that North shoreline at one point or another. When we would get to those "holes" we would fish them a little harder though.

I am looking forward to getting out there and doing it again. I sure hope that the fishing is half as good as it use to be. Probably will not care to deal with waterdogs and just bass fish the whole time.

You want to try and make it 2 weeks after the stiper trip?

Have you ever fished any Oklahoma lakes. There is a small city lake outside Durant that has some nice fish in it. It's set up like purtic creek where no boats are allowed to get on plane. I've caught some real nice fish in March. The lake is only open on the weekends until March 1st then it is open every day. There used to be a small fee but I think they might have dropped it. There is also a lake east of Atoka called McGee Creek. It is a great lake with lots of fish. I've hooked into some big bass there that I never turned. Both are pretty close to Sherman. Durant is about 45 minutes and McGee is about 1 1/2 hours. If your interested in going up to one of them be sure to get an Oklahoma license instead of the lake texoma license. I think its about $20 more.

As far as Monticello goes if you go on a Friday I'm in. If it's two weeks after the striper trip I will have to work that Sat. night. If you want to go the weekend before or after I could probably swing a Sat. trip.

I've never fished Oklahoma. Could be an interesting change from the same ol' bass chasin around here.

We will play it by ear on Monticello. I will probably be able to do a Friday trip but strongly doubt that I can do the weekend after the striper trip without serious reprocussions from the wife. :-) I will be taking my daughter on the youth only weekend the 15th, then fishing on the 22nd, so I should be home on the 29th. We can certianly push out a week for the Monticello trip if need be or just try and make it that friday. That would give me the weekend to work on the house and barn also.

I'm lookin forward to getting back into fishing. One more deer tag to fill and then hopefully my daughter can get one then I am done with hunting for a few weeks... :-) There is always hog hunting left to do then turkey season...

I'm planning on heading to texoma after deer season closes and start checking on the stripers. After the 22nd I'll be focusing on the largemouths again. Another good lake I forgot to mention is Lake Bonham. Not a far drive for you and a hech of a bass lake. Just have to buy a yearly permit that is around $7. Good luck on the late season deer hunts.

I'm good on Bonham until this year's expires. That is the lake where Wes and I caught at least 500 crappie in one night. Several of the crappie had multiple holes in their mouth from being caught a couple times. A morning in May we landed 52 bass on buzz baits and many more great days fishing. It seems like that lake is getting more pressure than it use to lately though so I have only gone a few times a year the last couple years. It is where I take the kids to catch perch though -- 30 minutes from the house.

Yeah, I think the secrets out about Bonham. I talked to guys this past year prefishing for a tournament and they were from a bass club in Plano. I asked why they drive so far for such a small lake and they said because everyone catches a lot of fish. I won my club tournament there last spring. I lost count but I think I cought at least 25 keepers and probably 15 of them were 2+ lbs. My dad and I also crappie fish a lot there. We've put out a few brushpiles and we always hit the main lake bridge. I caught a couple last year that were over 1 1/2 lbs. Mostly though they are 9" or less. One thing about it you don't get bored waiting for them to bite.

Would be glad to Charles... I really have had some great days out there with the largest one I caught out there being a 6 pounder. The last several trips the largest fish I have caught was 2 pounds or so but still fun.

Summer time is the most predictable out there and the fish can be caught in the reeds with a black/blue 1/4 oz jig.

Spring time the water is usually kinda muddy so we use pumpkin/chart lizards and chartruce buzz baits.

It can be a fun lake, so maybe I should be paying it a little more attention than I have in the past couple years.

Tex, I have never made an attempt to find any of the brush piles out there but have had several successful crappie trips under the main lake bridge. Lost some really nice fish under the middle bridge also at night on ultra-light. I agree that most of the crappie will be under fish but they at least keep your line tight and keep you interested.

I definately want to do a Monticello trip. I just got a report from Richie White and he says there were a lot of bass already watching over fry while several others cruising looking for beds. They are in the middle of the spawn there so if it is going to happen in needs to be in the next few weeks. Else, I think we need to just make it Purtis Creek.

Richard, what's up with Squaw Creek????? I did not realize it was closed.... Of course, I have never been on it so I had no idea. Interesting information none the less for those who are familiar with that lake.

If I remember right, they shut it down to boat traffic after 9/11.

Can you imagine the first few months fishing out there after they re-open it?!?! Man, oh man.

I don't know how your work schedule is but I'm thinking a weekday would be a lot less boat traffic. If you could pull another Friday off I think there would be no problem with me going Feb. 4th. I've got to work that Sat. so if that's no good we could maybe hook up the following weekend(fri or sat) and try which ever lake you think would be best.

Sounds good. I bet it's good overthere this week with the full moon. It's almost tempting to do some night fishing with this warmer weather. I'm thinking if it stays warm like this the first wave of the spawn will hit in February. I couldn't beleive Texoma was still in the 50s last weedend. I've never seen that this time of year.

Still on the fence with work. I will have a better feel tomorrow as far as work is concerned.

I was looking at the weather today and noticed it's calling for 62 degrees and sunny. With all this rain and possible snow, most lakes are going to be pretty cold so that probably is the best lake to go to. I would sure prefer to see it overcast and cold that day... I definately want to fish friday. Just need to make sure I have work taken care of.

How early you want to head that way? I may need to stop off at the body shop in Greenville on the way back to pick up her truck if you are up to it and it is ready.

I think it is 2:15 from the house but it has been several years since I have been there.

So... let's see about next friday if you are up to it. I hope we release these boards soon so that I can get a couple slack days.

You can fish for bass or catfish. Not sure if there are any crappie in the lake. I do not think they have sandbass either.

Hey Audra, if I remember right don't you and Keith fish Cooper some? If so when's the last time you were over there. I use to fish it a lot until last year when the lake was so low and was curious if it has came back up. Also you guys are more than welcome to come along to Monticello. Hopefully we can work something out for next weekend.

We haven't fished Cooper in a while. About 2 years ago, that lake had an awesome run on the sandbass. We were catching 200-300 fish a day! It was awesome. I kept telling Keith I was going to cast a bare hook and see if I could catch one, because it seemed like they would bite anything! We haven't really had the opportunity to fish much at all in the past couple of years. Work or family obligations seem to make things difficult. But, I plan to change that this year!! I love to fish! I love to fish Cooper. They have nice facilities (bathroom, fish cleaning, etc) and they are very close to us...around 15 minutes.

Well, I just talked to Keith, and I think we'll probably skip the Monticello trip. I'm not patient enough to bass fish. He mentined that Bob Sandlin has some sand bass and other stuff. We just don't ever fish for bass or catfish. We usually striper, sand bass, or crapie fish. So, after you get your Monticello trip over with, maybe we'll plan a trip to Bob Sandlin or Cooper. How does that sound?

I've always wanted to fish sam rayburn but I can't make my truck drive past ray roberts or fork to get there. One of these days I'm going make myself go. I've heard to many good things about that lake.
