This has been one unreal whitetail rut here in the Texas Hill Country. I've spent literally 3 weeks afield working cameras, covering a ranch that is basically a huge piece of unhunted, un-mananged, prime habitat property (low fence) that carries the native Hill Country whitetail genetics.

Leave them alone, let them grow...even if they have to share space with livestock, this is what you get.

I've been blessed to have access to cover this scene for roughly 4 years now. I've watched some of these bucks start their lives and I will witness their declines as the years move forward. I've learned so much....thought I knew a bit about whitetail before, amazing animals!

As the years roll on...I'm getting more out of this than putting any of them down.

God Bless!

Rob

Thanks guys!!!

I'm hunting them with my camera only. I have access to this place for photography, they don't hunt it and its basically livestock, low fence, clear natural springs and partially cleared cedar. These deer have no access to feeders, protein or any management minded programs....just native Texas Hill Country genetics at play. Thats what makes is so darn interesting to me...I'm learning a ton following these guys through the year, I basically hunt them year round with my cameras.

I've been out here going on 4 years now and I thought I knew whitetail habits/patterns etc before hand, I have been absolutely surprised at some of the things I have learned. I have watched one buck, roughly 22-23 inches wide for 4 years straight, he is now 7 or 8 years old, well on the decline, back legs hobbled like a lab living his last year. I've watched him rut, feed, change habitats through his golden years and now I'm learning his habits on the decline. I've kept logs on weather, solar and range conditions through the seasons, and I've been able to dial them in to close the distance well enough for decent pics. It's the same as hunting to close down on them but it's harder to do since I have to work with light, vegetation (clear shots for images) and work the camera manually for the exposures. Add the sound of the camera, it's tough as snot!

I've learned so much about these Hill Country whitetails without making a single shot. I've killed them hundreds of times with my camera and as the years roll along, I look forward to seeing them with new head gear as they grow velvet to hard bone into the new season.

I'm hunting year round now...my killing has slowed way down LOL!

I still hunt, waiting on cooler conditions down further south before heading out. Got to fill the freezer with some venison.....I don't think I could kill one of these big Hill Country bucks now, I've put too much time in them to lose the quality found in this little sanctuary.

Those are some awesome shots Rob... Very impressive bucks indeed and proof that the genes are there. That is great to have access to a place like that where you can experience these beautiful animals like this. The only thing better would be getting the chance to thread an arrow thru one... :-)
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish
