** IN TEXAS,** whats the coldest day you've every spent on the water. Be it from a have to day of competition, or voluntarily, how bad was it.

Also, did you catch anything ? Other than a the Flu or Pneumonia ??

Wes and I use to fish in January and February on Monticello. I remember several days with the reel and guides freezing up. I also remember a tournament that was 28 degrees at takeoff and 20+ MPH winds.... That was a cold/misserable day on the water. At least when we were fishing Monticello we were catching a lot of fish... :-)
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

1999 Lake Monticello, February 14-th

My Brother, Terry and I took my old 1984 Skeeter
for day on the warm water. Everything was going smooth until we got to the ramp and began to launch.

Discovered the gear shifter was froze up, (Oh it was 11-degrees that morning with a 10-15 mph wind) Not really thinking things through as one should, we pulled the cowling and unhooked the cables so we could operate it by hand(redneck style) Low and behold it work--kind of.

Terry ran the throttle and shifter while I steered; we headed to the back under the RR tracks. That's a pretty good run considering the shape we're it (him gas'n me steer'n).
Well, we made it to the RR bridge in about 30-40 mins cause the fog was so thick.
After shutting down, I scooted up front to drop the trolling motor.
Discovered it was froze too, and I broke the rope when I tried to pull it up, the rope snapped at the base as close as it could get to the housing.

After some serious thinking, we grabbed a weigh-in bag and started pouring water on the TM bracket. 5-bags later we freed it with the help of a long screw driver.
Now.... we were ready to fish, broke the rod locker open (it was froze shut too ) started casting spinner baits at the pad stems, on my first cast I catch a 4-lber. Alright, this ain't so bad is what I'm think'n as I unhook the fat lil chunk.
Soon after that, maybe 3-4 more cast both our reels froze up and the eye's were clogged with ice. Did I mention it was cold, we kept dipping the rods and reels in the warm water to melt the ice, but they'd ice up twice as quick every time we did that.
Of course our hands are getting wet every time we do it.
Well 250-300 cast, and 40+ reel dunks later, we haven't caught another fish.
It's around 11:00 am and still in the teens, we're about ready for some truck heater time, and discuss what next.

We hook the throttle linkage back up and make ready to leave, the old Johnson fires right off, I grab the steering wheel and try to turn but it's a no go. I'm in gear coming up on plane with no steering, the wheel was frozen tight.
Because the trolling motor was freed with the bags of hot water earlier, we tried that on the gear shifter too, it worked good but some must have spilled on the steering wheel in the process.
Realize if you can the boat is slick as all get out from the bags of water poured on everything, and we need to pour some on the steering wheel to break it loose, that warm water freezes in about 10-15 mins once in the boat, how we kept from falling over board I’ll never know.
Finally we make it back to the ramp, thanks to the man above the truck started and we take out.
Sitting in the truck warming up we come up with the idea to fish lake Winnsboro our home lake.
So we head back towards home for an afternoon shot at some cold water bass, we launch on the north end at a familiar spot. The air temps are pushing 20-22 degrees now around 1:00 pm, we hit a north bank throwing spinner baits and the for the first time, I throw a Black fluke, yep, a solid Black Super Fluke weightless on a sunny day against the bank with stumps. We catch 10-12 very nice bass on a 100 yd stretch in about 2-hrs.. We call the day a success and head for the ramp and load up. As I’m walking around the boat locking stuff down, I notice one of my trailer wheels is leaning BAD, upon further inspection the wheel bearing was shot and the hub beyond use, the bearing had welded to the spindle and it’s a wonder the wheel hadn’t feel off along the way.. Shear luck, it hadn’t ..

It took some doing, but we finally made it home on that cold day, never had I been plagued with so many equipment failures in a day.. Cold Temps can cause problems we often never think about until we ‘re forced to.

Yank, give us some examples of extreme cold weather gear failures.. If ya got any..

OK we were what they call back trolling for steelhead way up in devils hole in January. It was about 10 degrees, in the gorge though there isn't any wind so you can dress warm enough. We got up there and big chunks of ice the size of volkswagons were coming over the falls. We should have got outta there but we started catchin fish. When you back troll you use the big motor in reverse and adjust the speed to match the current, about 20 knots. Its technical, dangerous, but a hell of alot of fun. Your in white water with huge boulders and ice chunks comin at you like space invaders. We were the only ones on the water. But knew where the fish were. Later on in the winter the bigger steelhead (20 to 25 pounds) school up over a ledge in devils hole that drops from 65 to about 125 feet. We would try to stay on that ledge throwin a three way swivel rig with egg sacs or a luhr Jensen Kwik Fish. The guy runnin the boat can't fish he has to keep dodging the ice and rocks. We caught a bunch of fish then all hell broke loose. I thought I had a monster - rod was bent in half but couldn't do anything then the line ran all the way under the boat wtf I'm hangin on and the rod breaks wtf, then bam the back of the boat starts fillin with water. The boat got smashed by a huge underwater iceburg and the prop was smashed to hell. We didn't have a trollin motor, a jumper motor, or a spare prop and went spinning in circles banging into rocks and ice, all the way out to the lake. Right where the river meets the lake creates a huge under tow alot of boats get swamped us included. The river wants to push you out but the lake is pushin you in. With no motor we was skarewed. Thought we were goners but the coast guard station at the mouth of the river sent the boys out to rescue our dumb asses.

Any of you guys remember when Ray Roberts opened. Itwas very cold, I don't remember exactly what the temp was, but it was cold. Tom and I got to the lake and cruised up to where we wanted to start and before either one of us made a cast, I fell out of the boat!!! I was wearing rain gear and a snowmobile suit with rubber boots. If Tom hadn't been with me I dont know how I would have got my fat arse back into the boat. The water was warmer than the air temp, but by the time we made it back to the ramp I was an ice cube.

I fell out of my 2-man boat in February on Fork
in Birch Creek in 1986.. Lucky I had a change of clothes with me in my truck. I had a snowsuit and rain gear on when I did the big depth check..

It was funny... (NOW), my brother and a buddy were in our Jon boat about 60-feet away.
They said when I came up, I made the 'BIG KICK' and flopped in the boat and my rain gear Exploded from the over load of water..

It did scare the crud out of me, I was in a bunch of timber fishing a jig.

Man your old. You been fishing Fork for over 20 years! You probably forgot half the stuff I learnt after just two years on that little mud puddle.

The odd thing is, it seems like it was just last week.

They started building the 515 bridges back in early 1977, My brothers and I used to drive the old 515 road bed that is now 27' foot under water, we drove it every weekend.

It was one of the highlights every trip to Winnsboro.

I can remember driving across the new bridges looking South awaiting the first sight of oncoming water.

The images of the old tree lines still burned in my memory, to the north of the bridges were pond dams, and borrowing pits around Sawmill hump, and the distinct lane cut going up to Birch.

The original boat lanes were cut through the heavy timber long before the gates were closed.

They were easy to see, like giant trails winding through the timber as far as we could see from the high vantage point the bridges gave.

It was a sight to see, no one, except maybe a rare few knew what might lay ahead for bass fishing.

We certainly didn't at the time, Fork surprised us all.

15 degrees on Lake Texoma in December. It was my final club tournament of the year and I debated if it was worth it. Boat started right up but steering was impossible. I was fortunate to be fishing where I launched and caught a small limit within an hour. It was a freak cold front but the water temp was still normal for December. The fish weren't nearly as affected as I was.
