Anyone else going to take them out and make some brush piles for the crappie? My dad has collected about 25 that after deer season is over we are going to go put out at Proctor, Joe Pool, Whitney and Granbury. Hope he doesn't collect may more. Man it is itchy work. Anyone else do this with their old trees? |

Where I grew up on the coast they stake them out on the beach to help form / save sand dunes from wind erosion. Love to fish and hunt.

I've done a few for bass and crappie. I seem to have better luck catching crappie out of them than I do bass. I just take 2 or 3 trees and tie them together along with a couple of cinder blocks and push them over. I like using multiple trees so they are easier to find. I didn't get any trees this year but i was thinking about pulling some dead trees on the shoreline out and sinking them. I think this would be a lot cleaner and easier than carrying the trees out there in the boat. I see my rod is longer than yours.

A lot of times when people sink Christmas trees, the trees end up just laying on the bottom, burying in the silt, and not providing as much cover as they could. Here is a method that we've used that seems to help prevent this. First, attach concrete directly to the trunk by pouring concrete around it. If you use cord to tie cinder blocks onto the tree, the slack in the cord allows the tree to "lay down". Second, attach to the top of the tree a small sealed (with silicone, hot glue, etc) plastic bottle, like a 1 liter Coke bottle, 2 liter with a little water in it, etc. This adds bouyancy to the top. This, combined with the weight at the bottom, will make the tree stand straight up. You can put several out in one location, a few feet apart, and make a miniature forest. With space between the trees instead of several trees just all "clumped up", it gives the bass more hiding spaces and more ambush areas. Also great for the crappie, too! Here's a rough drawing of what I'm talking about: (See new diagram in post below. I messed up the first one!) Good luck!! Believe it or not, through trial and error (emphasis on error )!!!! And I made a mistake above....I listed one of our "errors". He he....imagine that. The bigger gallon size bottles like the Clorox bottles were too big. They wouldn't allow the tree to sink without adding more concrete, bricks, rocks, etc (whatever we could find lying around the water!). We had to use smaller bottles, like the 1 liter Coke bottles or the 2 liter bottles with a little water in them. You want just enough bouyancy to keep the tree upright on the way down, and until the base "settles" into the bottom. I'll go back and fix the pic and my original post in a little bit. Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.

Never knew that about the slack in the line Rudey. Good Info. We alwasy tied cinderblocks around the trunk and then put a bottle on top. We put the bottle on top more for finding the local than for boyancy. Glad to know it serves another purpose. |
