First off... It was great to see you again Texfisher and spend some time talking. Ron... Great to meet you as well...

I Decided to sign up for the JCO on Texoma to force some preparation for the Media Championship out there this year. The last time I was on the lake was for the 2007 Media Championship and I had nothing to go on but really old knowledge.

I started the morning in a familiar cove on the Texas side because I forgot to get my Texoma license and the water condition was 58 degrees and stained. Figured I would start with a Mr. Moss Green/Gold Gibroni fished split-shot because of the water color. I also mixed in some crank bait casts at likely structure. Fishing the subtle rock points I was getting nothing so I switched to the black/blue Bass Bone (wacky style bait) and almost immediately picked up a 3 pounder -- SWEET!!! Continued fishing the Bone slowly down the shoreline and picked up too more 15.5" swimmers in the next 10 minutes. While casting the shoreline I could see all of the trees and structure on the graph under the boat in 6 - 10 foot of water so I backed off and drop shot with a green pumpkin Indigo to no avail. I tried the crank bait again off the shore and no love so I went back to the Bass Bone. I caught another keeper in one of the same spots between some docks that had given up a previous keeper and another short fish. Had a fish pick up the Bone, swim away from the shore then drop it so I worked that area for 10 minutes with 4 different lures and never got bit again. I went back to that spot 4 other times also with no luck. Finally filled my limit around 9:30 and kept working the wacky rig.

Just as I was ready to leave that cove I upgraded my smallest fish with a 4 pounder and could not bring myself to leave after that. Unfortunately, I never upgraded again the rest of the day. I caught fish all day and landed at least 25 fish from that cove. The sad part is that I jumped off 2 that I know were 3 pounds plus because I saw them and lost several others throughout the day. I found a 5 pounder that was circling a bed but she would not commit. I kept checking on her throughout the afternoon but never could get her to bite. The later into the day it got, the more fish I could see cruising the shoreline when I got up tight. I knew the fish were there to upgrade, I just could not get them to bite.

Well, I ended up weighing in 12.1 for the tournament but it took 17+ to get a check and 26+ won it. Although I was way off the mark, I had a great time catching all of those fish on the Bone. I absolutely love to feel that “thump” followed by the distinct tension of the fish swimming off with the bait and a little “head shake”. I wish my daughter would not have backed out on me because she would have had a great time as well. The boat ride to Alberta Creek was quite pleasant and the ride back was even more enjoyable with all of that open water and no rouge wakes from big boats out for a pleasure cruise. I held her at about 55 MPH and just relaxed – no pressure to be anywhere. Just the soft hum of the Yamaha behind me and the subtle “tshhhhhh, tshhhhhhh, tshhhhhh”, as the hull skated across the surface of the water….. Man I love being on the lake!!!!!!!!

On the lessons learned, I think I know why I am loosing fish this year on the wacky rig as opposed to last year – I switched to floro and did not change my rod. The Gamakatsu Weedless Wide Gap hook tends to skin hook fish inside the mouth a lot and when I was fishing mono line there was plenty of stretch. Now that I am fishing floro there is significantly less stretch and I hypothesize that I am ripping the hook out. I will be switching to a softer tip rod for my tournament this Saturday and we will see how that works.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Or you just suck at fishing! (You knew I could not let that pass) :-)

Great times PQ. Congrats on the fish catching. I have not fished in three weeks and ready to get on the water this weekend.
Quit being a mad, little bald man!

Man, that's why I'm skitzing a little, the bed fish I have been catching have been skinny and long.... not a good combo.

It's been weird this year so far. Eric and I were talking about that after the JC's...

I got a spot I think I can get 5 pretty quick just probably have to weed through some slots.

We'll see what the day brings.....

Bed Fishing aint waining son, it's just getting started ol man....hahahaha....heck Cody Mlone catches an over every day.....hehehehe

Good to see you there Mike. I'm already getting ribbed about letting a guy fishing solo beat us. But I keep telling them you beat plenty of others as well. Hopefully the next one will be better to both of us.
