While I got more than I know what to do with now, I really want a new rod/reel combo and unhappy with current selections I have. Mainly need help with rod due to I always end up listening to some bum at the local stores and get talked into something I end up hating. Give me some suggestions.

I Mainly fish 12 lb test with single lead heads so need something with pretty good sensitivity. Do some cork fishing once in a while.

Reel wise it will probably be either a Curado or Calcutta. Anyone ever have any luck with a Quantum in saltwater?

I have been very impressed with these http://www.falconrods.com/cara.htm

As far as reels, I have Curados, Calcuttas and Chronarcs. Out of the two you mentioned I'd get the Curado. If you really want a sweet reel look at the Chronarcs.

Let us know what you end up getting.

I like the curado/allstar combo Academy sells. Another month or so and we should be to the point they put them on sale for $139.

I build my own rods and use an assortment of reels. Ambassadeur (pre Swedish departure) and Quantum right now. I prefer the round big spooled baitcasters vice the new, low profile models for saltwater action. They generally spool over 200 yards of line (in the 8lb or 10lb class) which is more critical when you hang into an oversized redfish or jackfish in the surf or deep channels. I've been spooled several times even with 250 yards of line on a few bruisers through the years and I lean heavily on lots of line and a decent drag vice palming comfort. I overhand cast a ton in the salt trying to get every ounce of distance out of the cast. Don't need pin point underhand accuracy there.

I like E-Glass blanks (old school I guess?) in the 7ft - 8ft range and fast taper action for saltwater fishing. The first 1.5 ft from the tip is sensitive with a big spine the rest of the blank down to the butt. Generally rods like this are labeled Salmon/Steelhead blanks from the many different rod blank providers. These blanks make it easy to toss 1/2 - 1 oz lure offerings up to 60 - 70 yards when the reel is tuned and oiled properly. They have plenty of spine to fight fish well over 20 - 40 pounds and you're limitation is line and drag on the reel.

Butt wrap on a 7ft Fenwick E-Glass stick (one piece).

Same old Fenwick E-Glass rod with a Quantum Iron IR400CX (older reel not sold anymore) spooled with 12lb P-Line working in the Port Mansfield channel. I have roughly 190 yards of 12 on this reel and prefer to cast 8lb test in clear water. Happy with the P-Line though and it's line diameter size is pretty darn small for 12lb.

If I get this job in SA you and Austin going to have room for another on those last second PINS trips? I don't know if I can wait until June for my next taste.

I wasn't talking about riding in the vehicle with you just fishing with you at the coast. I imagine just me would be cramped in your little pony. :-)

Jason you know you're fishing with me at the coast Brother! Heck, we get a big old hoss hooked up and we all have to take turns on the fighting duties.

Bigun thanks. You know you can hand pick a blank based on a certain action and build one fairly quickly too. A few "how to" articles/books are avaialable out there that document this.

I can show you how but we need to spend a few moments down Cajun way to demonstrate the wrap process. I will bring some thread and we will wrap a quick guide to show you the basic ropes.

Here's what's going to happen at PINS BigP.

The big rod lights off and you set the hook and hang on.

Then you get tired after 20 minutes and hand off the rod to someone else for another 15 minutes.

And then he gets tired and you hand off the rod to yet another fisherman who hangs for 20-30 minutes...this continues back and forth till you win or he wins. After an hour and a half of this, he won. But we didn't get thirsty between fights :-) Get ready, we have bigger gear (1500 yards of 80lb test) and we need all the help we can get.

I hope everyone here can try to make this event. We should have about 5 big rods soaking big baits this year. The plan is to kayak out the big stuff and use the little stuff to fill the cooler with filets and bait (for the big stuff).

Mike that certainly is him.

For the June PINS trip.....

Old Japanese Minnow farmer has added a kayak to his equipment list plus a Penn 9/0.

I've added a Daiwa 600H to my line up (Penn 6/0) to stick on that huge Fenwick long rod we used for a flag pole last trip. In the process of building a standup IGFA 50-130 lb class fishing blank and on this blank a fresh Penn 9/0 will be mounted. Both the Daiwa and Penn will have new Spectra line (I might lean on the new Stren offering) at 65lb test and 80lb test. I should be able to spool 1500 yards of the stuff and fill the rest of the reels up with 130lb test mono (top shot style). I need the 130lb on top to give the fight a little more shock absorption, otherwise the spectra line will shake your teeth loose on a big fish or simply break on sudden surges.

We are going to have a different line-up on the beach this year. If we are lucky enough to hook up, everyone gets a turn to feel the power.

The big question is.....who's going to lasso OLD TOOFIES tail? :-)
