What a beating...

Terry & Dennis, it was great chatting with ya'll on Friday. The rest of my night absolutely sucked but that is another story.

Saturday I was eager having drawn boat number 2 and feeling like I had a decent starting plan. Takeoff came and I headed to my first spot with great anticipation. I was very dissapointed with the first 3 fish all being under 12 inches. I moved and immediately jumped off a possible keeper at the boat by making a mistake. I did not have the net ready and tried to turn the fish around at the boat to swing him in. At the same time I tried to turn him he jumped and got slack -- da*$nit. While fishing this spot I'm looking at some water about 100 yards away where a dock use to be with a rock shoreline on a point and poles sticking out of the water. I am thinking I should get over there and try it. Five minutes go by and I am still thinking about it. Then a boat motors right to it and catches a good keeper -- da*$nit!

Well, I decide to make a run to my next spot and it yields nothing so I make another move. The pair of docks I had caught some fish on prefishing had a boat there so I moved to the next spot on my list and it was fruitless. I leave there and the pair of docks are empty so I swing in and make a flip to the wooden ladder and feel the wonderful thump... It was a solid 3 pounder. I pulled another short fish of the docks and moved down the shoreline to another set I had pre-fished. That dock yielded a short fish and a 15 incher. I attempted to get on another marked dock but it was occupied so I decided to motor back into this cove I had not fished. The dock in the very back had visible brush so I fished it. I hooked a fish and lost it after seeing it was a solid 2 pounder then missed another fish there.

I made a move up the lake in hopes of getting on the dock where I broke off a good one pre-fishing. Of course, there was a boat fishing the dock so I kept going back and there was a couple on the adjacent dock and their dog was roaming the shoreline. First flip I hook a fish and it jumps. The dog goes nuts and jumps in the water. While they are yelling at the dog to come back he proceeds to swim all around my boat, under the dock where I caught the fish, and just tears up the place. The fish was a short fish so I called the dogs name, showed him the fish and tossed it in front of their dock. The dog chased after the fish and continued searching for where it hit the water while I got out of there.

I hit some other docks in that area which yielded 3 more short fish then I went to the dock where I really wanted to be. Third flip and thump. I set the hook and only had the fish on for a few cranks when it pulled off -- da*$mit... That was probably the 4th missed fish. I fished that dock for 15 minutes hitting every piece if of visible and non-visible structure I could with no additional bites.

I was messing with stuff and the wind had blown me down 3 docks where there was a stick in what looked like a foot of water so I cast to it. The stick was against a pole and I hit right in the corner. Felt the thump, set the hook and boated another 3 pounder. Well, the boat was drifting fast and with fish in hand I dropped the pole to get on the trolling motor to avoid my cowling from raming metal poles. As I pulled away something started pulling the fish out of my hand. I had knocked the rod overboard and fortunately the fish was still hooked. I was able to get the tip of the rod in my hand and like an idiot I tried to lift the reel into the boat holding the rod tip about 12 inches down and it snapped in my hand -- da*$nit!

I spent the next 10 minutes switching the reel to another rod and getting it back to fishing. By now I had drifted completely across the cove and was almost beached. I made a cast to the nearest structure and of course all the water in the bearings yielded me a massive overrun. As I am pulling out line I am also moving the boat into the wind. With what seemed like a half a spool left to untangle I felt a thump and the line got heavy. I engauged the reel, set the hook and pulled in another solid 2 pounder.

I moved around some more checking marked locations and the only thing to show for the effort was more short fish. I went back to the dock in the back of the cove and got nothing. I never cound get back on the dock with the wooden ladder.

With 15 minutes till I had to check in I took a chance and went to the back of a cove where I had caught fish a couple years ago. The 4th flip was greeted with a thump and a head pull. I set the hook and outwardly prayed -- "please be a keeper, please be a keeper". The fish measured 14 3/4" and I had 2 minutes left till I needed to head to check in. I made one more cast and headed in.

Ended up with 5 for 11.92 which was short of my goal but I was happy that it was over. I had entered the flipping contest but was too tired to hang around for that. There were a lot of 14 pound bags coming across the stage so I just headed home.

It was a tuff day and I fished terribly. I broke one of my favorite rods, my motor is not running right, I think I still have fiberglass in my hand, one of the short fish managed to get a dorsal fin in one of my fingers and I think part of the fin is still in there.... Oh the joys of tournament fishing....
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

LMAO Oz...... I think it is the hook. That hook seems to skin hook too often and pulls out easily.

Or.... Maybe it is just my hookset... :-)

LMAO Zeet.... Bad days happen and nothing I can do to change it.

I do agree, 42nd out of 169 isn't horrible. It just was not where I wanted to be and I can't help but wonder if one of those missed fish was the kicker I needed to get in the money.

I get one more shot at that lake this year for the championship so I am going to spend some time looking around for brush piles and hope that the water comes up a couple of feet between now and then.
