If you use braid as your mainline, what size braid are you using for your dropshot rod? Anybody using a swivel to help with the line twist?

No swivel for me.. I use 8-30 braid & 6-9 feet of F/C leader..
It has every advantage IMO over flow-carb or mono.. Only thing is when it gets twist, wind knots will drive you crazy...

I used the braid and never used a swivel, but went back to straight fluoro.... don't spool your spinning reel very full and stretch about 40 yards every morning before you fish..... and it will help.

Billy is king of drop shotting so I would go with what he says over me my man!

I don't use a spinning reel for drop shot...I use a bait caster in 7 to 1 gear ratio coupled with a medium to medium heavy rod such as the Dobyns 703 series rods....This set up with 12lb mono and no leader has several advantages for me over a spinning set up.

If you are fishing verticaly in deep water, The fish tend to come straight up at the boat and with the 7 to 1 ratio you can keep up with the fish and thus avoid the inevitable jump off at the boat....Also no line twist issues.

I do about the same as Pickle, except I use F/C. Have found if you spray line conditioning like KVD or Line Butter helps a ton.

I might add that I can't stand Braid.

my setup is on a bait caster and a G loomis rod. I can't stand spinning reels. I was pitching docks this weekend with the drop shot and after a couple of hours ended up with a lot of line twist. My guess it is from the constant reeling in and re-pitch. Billy you are using the leader material and not just normal floro? What # test are you using? What is the preferred knot on the braid to floro?

10-15 lb standard f/c depending on water temp and cover. I like trilene 100% best..

I use the uni-knot, make 5 wraps with each line, pull the two together very slowly and slobber the heck out of them..

Then take one tag end at a time in your teeth pull away from my face an cut as close to the uni-knot as possible.

It leaves a clean compact knot that goes through the eyes with ease and is very strong..

If I'm on a lot of bigger fish I may retie the hook knot and the uni a couple times if I get nervous..
As a rule in competition I keep 3-rods rigged at much as possible, don't want down time when its for money.. I too use baitcasters, I feel they give me a power advantage.

I'm a little different on my hook knot too, I use the old tried and true improved clinch knot instead of the palamar... I like it better on F/C won't burn as much IMO..

Yanks DS is Straight 15 lbs. fluro Seaguar Invisx on the baitcaster , 20 lbs braid on the spinner spool(less line twist), fluro leader 8 lbs sometimes with a tiny barrel swivel most times with a knotted leader. Used to use the uni but snapped on me a couple times probably my fault, but won't use it again. Use the albright knot my son taught me when we were fly fishing for all my leaders easy to tie, slides through the guides nice and strong. If the water weren't so clear would go braid all the way cause the pike teeth and the zebra mussel shell beds up here snaps fluor quick. http://www.animatedknots.com/albright/index.php

Catching fish every now and again will prevent line twist Wes :-)

I use 12 or 15 lb Segaur straight on the spool. I tried the braid with a leader and just lost too many fish breaking at the uni-knot to the leader because I am too lazy to re-tie it every now and then.

A good weight will reduce the line twist some but I just take it as part of the game. When it gets too bad to deal with I re-spool.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish
