High everyone! I've been lurking around on this site for the past few weeks but this is my first thread. Here is the deal. I have had a boat now going on 4 years. It came with continental batteries, every year I have to replace them. I'm tired of doing this and it has affected some of my tournaments. Anyone care to throw out some brands they like and why? Thanks

We have interstate on our boats and havent had any problems with them yet. Have you looked into the solar charges you can hook up to them?

Robert,

Welcome to the site.

The life of your battery is determined by how you take care of them.

Start off with a good quality deep cycle battery. Keep all connections clean and tight. Make sure the water level is kept full (don't over fill). Recharge your batteries immediatley after using them (don't over charge). If you have a built in battery charger this will help, however, I have heard of stories that if left plugged in for prolonged periods they can catch your boat on fire.

Here's what I do. After using my boat for the day I plug my battery charger in. The next day I check to insure it's fully charged if it is I unplug it. About evry week I go plug it in again to top it off than unplug.

My cranking battery is charged when running the big motor. But if it's been sitting for a while, I'll throw a slow charge on it, once again don't over charge.

Hope this helps.

I second what Charles has said. I use to just charge my batteries before a trip but was always having to replace them annually. When I got the Skeeter w/ on-board charger I started plugging in when I got home and the batteries are much stronger and lasted significantly longer.

I still tend to neglect the cranking battery but I learned my lesson last year when Charles had to jump me over 2 times on a fishing trip.

I like the Stowaway from Academy.

My boat has 2 chargers installed. THese chargers are supposed to cut off once the batteries are charged. Do ya'll think it is best to leave the chargers plugged in regardless or only when there is a calling?

Dean,

I'd plug them in until the batteries are fully charged, than unplug once fully charged. Every week or so go plus it in again to a full charge, than unplug again.

Once again, I have heard of several stories of onboard charges malfunctioning and catching boats on fire. Probably a one in a million chance, but with my luck I'd be the one!

I've had one for over 6 years I usually keep plugged in all times and has not burnt my boat down yet. Maybe I should go get insurance real quick though!

I bought those big Yellow batteries at Walmart and have had good luck with them so far. Before that I always used maintenance free AC Delco's and are very good.

Speaking of batteries, if any of you guys have any buddies who are in the car repair business, see if they deal with Interstate. Interstate used to sell (I don't know if they still do) what they called "blem" batteries at a SEVERELY discounted rate to their dealers. There's nothing wrong internally with these batteries, but something is wrong externally, usually something like the printing/stamping is messed up on the top, the paint isn't right, or some other blemish (thus, "blem"). They also don't have a warranty.

But, I could live without a warranty, 'cause we could get the perfectly good, brand new "blems" for $25 a piece, starting OR deep-cycle.

Just something you might want to check into.

I agree charging them right after use is the key. I went through a few different trolling batteries, but I had a Diehard cranking battery that lasted forever.

Thanks for all the responses. After the 1st set of trolling batteries I went through, I learned about battery maintenance and kept better tabs on water level. But my boat storage was miles from the house, I would have a charger going on them for several days until I made it out there again. After the 2nd set, I bought an onboard charger that is suppose to "trickle" after the batteries reached full charge. Now I will get a 3rd set of batteries, possibly the Stoway's that Picou recommended. Watch the water level and charge the batteries after a fishing trip and before. Let's see how long they last now.

Thanks ATTHEWALL, I've seen you posting on Texasbowhunter as well. That ramp in the pic looks familiar. It looks like it is at Texoma but I'm not sure where. Later

It certainly is Texhoma and the first FTN fishing get together. Our fearless Admiral is standing on the starboard side and Wes (the silent Xo) is standing on the port.

I saw the posting for the ftn get together and Texfisher told be about it also. We are in the same bass club out of Sherman. He has already started a thread on invites. I hope to make the next FTN fishing fest and meet some of you guys.
