Thinking about upgrading fish finders on the boat. The boat is a SX186. no jackplate. No stumps so don't think I need the protection for the transducer. My home lake is pretty shallow so thinking SI is the way to go. If you had around 1k or so what is the recommendation.

Wes I just looked at this yesterday at the BPS in Akron NY, about to jump on it...I like the down scan better than the SI cause I don't have to turn my head sideways when I look at it.

Nice yank, but looking for recommendations on SI. Lowrance versus hummingbird.

Wes,
I just took all the birds off my Skeeter and went with Lowrance. My personal opinion is that Lowrance has a way more clearer sonar than bird. I noticed you could not get the birds dialed in as good as you can Lowrance. What
I mean is on 2D on the bird, it is hard to tell the size of the fish in the school. With Lowrance, you can tell by the color and size/thickness of the arch. And normally tell how many fish are in the school.

Id go with Lowrance if it were me.

Wes in that price range I would def. take a look at the new Elite 7 Lowrance...Chuck over at Service marine in Emory is a dealer and can answer all questions you may have and has a lot of insight and real world practical knowledge. Mention FTN when you call and he may hang up on you...just sayin'.

Pickle-
I got the Elite 7 up front. Sweet graph, but 2 things I dont like. It doesnt have side imaging, and it does not come with a trolling motor mount. Mine is "Rigged" on my trolling motor right now. The holder doesnt come out til March. Stupid if you ask me. It is sweet that it has 2d, down, and mapping on it. But no side imaging.
But you are right pickle, for $700, it is a pretty sweet graph. Even without side imaging.

I have the 1198 & 898 birds and the SI to me is good for locating structure but not fish...I can't tell a if that thing on the screen is a fish with confidence... I've tried alot to get used to using the SI but I rely on 2d for locating fish! SI is good on schools of bait too... Maybe mine needs to be tweeked?

My own opinion having been in several boats with both brands is that with my lowrance units I can find and locate fish with both SI and downscan.. I use SI when I'm looking and downscan when I'm on fish.. I've got an 8 in the console and a 7 up front.. it doesn't bother me to be on sonar up front, and have my downscan at the rear of the boat... That transducer is best used when your not constantly turning it anyway.. And lowrance's sonar is dead nuts on my opinion.. Gilstrap set up both my units and I rarely need to tweak them..

I heard there is a chineese guy that wrote a softward PID loop for HB to show fish every now and then on the graph becuase the BB SI cant do it on its own.

Yes Sink..I forgot it didn't have side scan which is what Wes was asking for...Sorry Wes. And yes you have to mount the down scan transducer on the trolling motor. Side scan is cool for looking at stuff but down scan has been way more useful for me as Brother Derek stated before.

As far as brands go...Lowrance period for me...

Wes,

Look at Tacklewarehouse.com Free shipping and no sales tax. The savings on sales tax for that would buy you almost eight dirty thirties.
