I need to get something on front of my boat that will give me visability into the water below me. Right now I have a flasher on the dashboard and a fish finder next to the steering wheel. Neither of these do me any good while fishing from the front of the boat. I already have a cutout for the flasher in the front of the boat and would need to drill holes to mount a fish finder on the front. Which should I get -- NOT BOTH -- for the front of my boat? Please give feedback on why you believe one is better than the other for this location. Keep in mind, I do almost 100% of my fishing from the front of the boat. Thanks folks... Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Depends. Do you want the graphing/fish finder feature, or just the depth? It all comes down to that..... Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.

Don't ask me. I don't fish water more than 3 ft deep! My limited experience with both on Lake Fork was I liked the graph but mainly due to I did not know how read flasher as well. |

Seems like an easy enough question Rudey... but I would like to know what someone else would have and why... I am torn on which I would rather have. Flashers are easy to read but require you to be looking at them when they show fish and you do not get the pictoral effect. Graphs are easy to get set up incorrecetly and show things as fish that really are not. I know I could figure it out eventually and benefit by using a graph. I guess it will also be determined by price. So far, the flashers I have looked at are all pretty high. My usage model is water depth & temp and bottom contour. Anyway, I am curious what others would do and why so that I can get a feel for the things that I have not considered at this point. Then there is the transducer question... do I mount it to the trolling motor, gel it into the hull, or mount it on the transom? I hit quite a few stumps while bass fishing and would probably make short work of a trolling motor mounted transducer. Heck, I may just move my dash flasher up to the front of the boat for a while and be done with it. Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

I'd go with a simple graph. They're cheap, will give bottom contour, and the depth. You'd be surprised how well the trolling motor mounted transducers will last. Plus, they give a clearer reading (since they're not reading through a hull), and also read right where you are, not 17 feet behind you. That can make a big difference when you're trying to stay right on a ledge, hump, etc. Just my thoughts. Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.

I think a graph on the front of the boat is overrated. I have one only becuase it came with the boat. I will usually graph a deep hump from the console to determine if any bait fish are down there. If they are I will throw out a marker and start fishing. If I'm graphing a creek channel or ditch I will throw several markers out so I have a trail to visualize it. |

I like having a graph up front. The main reason is I fish texoma a lot and brushpiles are a ticket to fish on that lake. I'm always watching my graph when fishing and have found a lot of other peoples brushpiles while fishing. It's also nice that you have a little bit of history on a graph where on a flasher its over in a second. I can't totally knock a flasher though since I haven't had one in over 8 years. I'm sure they work very well once you learn what to look for. I've been wanting to upgrade my bow mounted graph for sometime but I was hoping to upgrade my boat first. It looks like it will be a few more years. If you're richer than me I think we're related. If you're poorer than me I know we're related. My bass club webpage http://texbass.8m.com/

Add a portable GPS unit in your pocket for those unique brushpiles graphed from the bow and your set Mike. Punch those GPS coordinates in and after you record a couple dozen..... call Wes and I (Message edited by atthewall on January 26, 2005) |

The only thing a Rudey Graph would report on is beer cans and bikinis. And half the time it would give false readings each time the transducer got covered up by a cold beer can during intermittent recharges. (Message edited by atthewall on January 26, 2005) |

I have a Lowrance X85 on the bow of the boat, but have two transducer cables coming in behind it.One from the back of the boat for general use and one on the trolling motor for when I'm fishing structure like brush piles, drop offs, rail road bridges, hydrilla lines etc. It's been on there since '98 and I've never ahd a problem yet.Mainly used for winter\summer fishing. |

I've got a graph & a flasher on the front. transducer is mounted on troll motor and have had very little problem with it. Occasionally I will hit something that moves it a little sideways, but its easy to straighten back up M&M

I've been looking and there are a couple options for me to mount a transducer to the trolling motor. Some of the units come with the mount already and others I would have to buy either an adapter or a new transducer. I suppose if I have it mounted behind the keel on the trolling motor it should be pretty well protected. Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Mine is mounted with a hose clamp. They make a transducer for mounting on the trolling motor,it has a slot on it to put the hose clamp through it.Mine is mounted in front of the keel because there is no room behind it. |

Charles, yes... I had to work yesterday and I did not leave work till after midnight. Today we are taking Connie's truck to drop off at the body shop. I'll get by there next week and bring the rifle with me. Rob, that's a plan if you will be willing to drive up here for the various tournaments and fishing trips that I will be going on this spring/summer. I've tried using Wes as my reader but that has not proven to be too successful. He tells me false truths so that he has the upper hand and complains about me "front-ending" the boat... Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish
