I would make any holding tank round and white and keep it in the shade. Cycle the water or provide oxygen via an air pump is the only way to ensure they don't die off. A better alternative might be to purchase a 55 gallon fish tank, add rock as a substrat and get a standard fish filter/pump system. Put them in your house or garage near sunlight. They should have light for 10 hours a day at a minimum. You also need to consider your initial water offering. Straight tap water will kill them. Your best bet will be to fill up a couple of 5 or 10 gallon containers with lake water and use that to fill over half of the tank with the initial water offering. The rest of the your water (to make up the difference lake water to fill tank) should be treated with a chlorine/chloramine neutralizer (found at Pet stores in the fish department). A couple of drops added to several gallons of water eliminates all trace elements of chlorine/chloramine in about a minute or so. Another option would be to purchase a fish cage. Put your perch in that and hide the cage somewhere at the lake submerged and tied off.

Hey Sturm, I've done a little jugging in the past with my father-in-law. We always used shad or ghost minnows. Do perch work that much better? Always willing to learn something new. |

How many hooks do you use on your average jug rig Sturm? It's been way too many years since I ran a trotline. This spring and summer Wes and I have our minds set in catching flatheads on the Guadalupe River. Live bait and a lot of work but we think we can possibly catch one that is worthy of a FTN.com trophy? |

Looks pretty straight forward indeed and thanks for the pics. I suppose you suspend the bait off the bottom a few feet with that rig? Wes and I plan on tieing off our drop lines on overhanging cypress tree roots. Single hooks with a pretty healthy lead weight on the bottom and a drop hook rig above. The entire deal will be a drop line tied to a 3 way swivel. One swivel will be to the cypress tree. The middle swivel is the bait on a 2ft section trailing a 7/0 - 9/0 cicle hook. The lower swivel will be tied to an 6 - 8 oz weight and allowed to rest on the bottom of the river. The bait will be a fairly large sized live perch or other suitable live bait suspended about 3ft off the bottom. I also plan on soaking a few dead baits on rod/reel setups (channels/blues) for additional fishing action. We will take pics of this deal as spring and summer approach. |

but i want to be in the pics! i dont like the hook anywhere but the bottom those cats fight for a while and then tire and rest for a while and do it again and if the weight is below the hook it (for me) makes for a big, tangled, mess and i dont like it not one bit with those noodles you can adjust the depth however you would like it there pretty fool proof my fat fingers cant spell

My rods will be "fish finder" style. Basically the same hooks tied to a stout mono leader up to a two way barrel swivel. The bottom side of the swivel will be the bait side and the top side will be tied to my fishing line. I add a 2 or 3 oz egg sinker to my main line with a plastic bb just below the weight and toss that into the river to ride the current on the bottom. If I get tangled a bunch, I might switch to the fish finder drop rig too? |
