Well, we're breaking ground today.
My son&law booked a villa for May3-to-May10. Kay and I have been married for 12+ yrs and never been on an airplane togther. It's a mothers day getta way, there will be 3 couples and 1-kiddo.
I've never fished from a kayak, that'll be a first, and I've never been to Tulum. Gonna have to take a few ugly sticks and some tackle.
Can you buy fishing stuff down there ?????
After all we've been through the last year, I can use a trip lke this.
It's a sucluded spot, we want it like that, a few dozen Negro Modelo's are going down buddy I can promise you that..

That is freaking awesome cuz! Yall will have a blast! All you need is a hook, weight, and some kind of bait. Conch, squid, shrimp......

Take a pink mirror lure and it will catch anything that swims in the ocean. Buy the bait from locals for cheap

Sounds like you can find some flats or lagoons with your kayak bud! Found this.........

If you are looking for good flats fishing in Tulum or fishing for bonefish, fishing for tarpon, fishing for permit or fishing for snook, without a doubt, world famous Bocapaila and Ascension Bay flats are your best choice. We choose the area according to your preference or weather conditions. Light tackle fisherman will find many opportunities to catch different species and have a great day.

Family fishing trips are available with our kids program. We focus on snappers or small bonefish, either with spinning rods or handlines for kids younger than 6 years. They will love the action! We will try bottom fishing and spot fishing near the mangroves. A day that you won't forget.

If you are a beginner or if it’s your first time flyfishing, we will primarily target schools with small bonefish (1–2 pounds), because the school is easier to see, you can cast close to the school edge and they will compete for your flies (most times). When your eyes get used to see bonefish swimming or bonefish tailing and your casting in the wind, then the guide will work the flats positioning the wind on your back and will help you to spot the fish. Barracudas, Snappers and Jacks complement the menu.

Wind protection is one of the great advantages of this area. Unlike Bahamas , here we can fish for bonefish 365 days of the year. Of course in Tulum and all the Yucatan Peninsula we get very windy days, from South East, East and North, but we can always find protected flats or lagoons where we can see and cast at bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, jacks, barracudas, Spanish mackerels, and other species.

Thanks Zach, that's awesome info.. I have a couple rod tubes, I'm sure I can get a few reels and a fly fishing reel in my bags.
Never caught a bone fish, they're lil hot rods of the flats.
I'm jacked about the trip, we need a gettaway..

Hi Billy - Its very nice there - beautiful.. Ive fished Bopcapiala and Asencion bay near Tulum a few times.. Bonefish, permit, tarpon, mullet, jacks, snappers, cuda -- more -
The people at Pesca Maya Lodge will get you on fish if you use them. But all you need is a 4000 size (shimano spinner for instance) 6 lb test mono or better yet flouro for bonefish , maybe a second spool of 8 or 10 lb test if you get into Tarpon or Permit
I've pared it down almost exclusively 1/8 oz or mostly-- 1/4 oz bucktails - or little curly tail plastics or tiny tubes on a 1/4 round jig head.. Bright colors ~ combo w/black..
My Best having been Yellow or Green. They like bright.. If you can "tip" the jig with a crab leg - they like that too.

Tarpon like the swimbaits, paddletail or curly tail, 4 inches, exposed hooks

Travel rods are everywhere these days it seems and they pack into your bag. 7 foot Med -or LT Medium

Tulum is close to great flats fishing and those flats are alive with life - you'll see so many cool things... so many.

Look around, Have a cerveza -- Have a blast.

Zeets post mentions something pretty key I think.. - Asencion bay is a good place to get out of the wind. Lots of comfortable water for fishermen.

I don't see how y'all do it.... Saltwater fishing that is. I mean it is fun while you are catching but it is a total beat down the rest of the time. I guess I need to try the bays instead of the big water. Two days on the big water and I need 3 to recover.

This is sort of unique salt water fishing here... The flats can be rough or like a pond. Its about that wind if you can get out of it its easy casting, and you can feel and work your lines..

Hey Billy, Ive walked beach Just North of Tulum tossing bucktails (up to an oz) and caught some cool fish as well (ladyfish, jacks, snapper) -

Again, Its a ball.. everything there is fast, fast, fast once hooked.

Not all beaches in Mexico are perfectly safe though, ask a few questions before heading out in a direction on a beach stroll if you do that.

Wow.. I can't wait, my S&L has been there a lot. He can't fish for spit, he did say we are in a protected area from strong winds and is a very safe beach.. We are going to get a panga and look for sails, I've fished Cancun for sails and marlin, May is the peak month for those.
But honestly, I'm more excited about walking and Kayaking the bay and the Flats----heck it's in the backyard.
Great info, very excitng stuff, I'm so ready.

What you're going to do is fun for sure... that whole thing down there-- - (so says the guy living in a "Polar Vortex" ;)
Ice on our lakes and ponds is getting too thick to drill thru without an auger extension.

You guys got a snow storm near Dallas this week too right?
I bet Tulum is not within the range of the dreaded 'Polar Vortex'
- I have some rare remaining "Rogers Market / Carp Corner" bucktails that catch Yucatan flats fish - tried and true my man.. guaranteed to catch a speedster ;) - I'll send them to Richard soon if you want? - give them a try,, pop....zingggggg... ;)

Agh - I'm way too slow.. -- I just put a couple examples of what I got bones on in the mail yesterday --- to Richard... Oh well maybe he can use them to catch Crappie. Its just 1/8 and 1/4 bucktails or tiny rubber crappie tubes on lead heads in the brightest color combos you can find..

Thanks guys..
I went to BP and bought a handful of exspensive hand tied flies that look like crabs, shrimp etc.... going to use lite spinning gear with split shots pinched above to cast into the schools.
Oh, I got some Big Tarpon flies for the heavy stuff we have too.
I'll try to sent pic's if I stay sober from time to time, hicup-burp .....LOL
