I wrote this a few years for the main page of the site. I was writing an article a month and keeping them in a linked to archive. I may pull a few out just for grins...

Spring Sand bass Run - 3/5/02

For those of you who are accustomed to chasing sand bass (white bass) up the creeks in the spring, this will not come as any new information to you. But, for those of you who have never experienced the thrills of casting ultra-light tackle while walking the banks of the tree infested creeks chasing the spring spawn sandies, this may be useful information. There aren't many things more exhilarating than hanging into a big sow white bass in a small creek with loads of snags to wrap you up in. Not only are these little silver sided racers hard hitters, they are also mighty fighters for there size. They are truly worth the efforts of walking the creeks -- even for catch & release fishing.

Every year in the spring, the sand bass move up the main creeks and rivers from the main lakes that they spend the majority of the year in. This is the time that they are prime pickins for shore anglers. Rarely will you be fishing in a creek that is too wide to cast across, so all the water is pretty accessible. Choose waterways that have a fairly close connection to either the lake or the main creek that runs into the lake. For Lake Livingston, find any creek off the Trinity river for several miles North of the lake. Fish that mile or so of creek and you should have good fishing. Also, don't forget to check below the dams of the various lakes in Texas. These are normally great places to catch the fish attempting to move upstream to spawn. Not every water body in the state has white bass, so check the lake off the creek that you are interested in and make sure that they have a population before you head to the creek.

Lastly, the baits I prefer to use are little 1/16 to 1/8 oz jigs or RoadRunners. The color is dependent on the water condition. In muddy water, try a yellow. In clear water, go with the white, and lastly in greenish water use the chartreuse baits. It is best to have a little of each with you and if one is not working, try the others. Focus you casts on steep banks, backwaters, and anything that provides an ambush site for these little frenzied fish. Do diligence and give it a little time. Talk to people out there fishing and get tips from them also. The ones who fish these places year in and year out can be the best help.

In closing, make sure that you have a good time, keep no more than you need, and take everything back out with you that you took in. There is nothing more saddening than to see a creek that is littered with fishing lure wrappers, minnow bags, and other trash that people brought in while fishing and simply threw it out in the woods. The outdoors is not our trash can and we have a responsibility to keep it clean for all of our future.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

During my hunting this year, I have found many creeks that join into a large lake. I know sandies run up these creeks in the spring time. However....Texas is much different than IL (first year here). When can I expect the sandies to start running up. Also, how do they eat. Duck season ends this Sunday...after that, it's back to rod and reel.

I think they're pretty good! They're not as good as, say, crappie. But they're good in their own right!

I agree with Rudy... They are not as flaky and white as crappie but if you remove the red meat from the center of the fillet they are just fine for eating.

As far as time lines, it will be the latter part of February that the run starts to get strong. They should be stacking up at the creek mouths right now in preparation for the run up the creeks. I have not been on the creek in many years trying to catch sandies and I really should get back after it again one of these days. I also want to do a better job of going after crappie when they run into the creeks to spawn once the sand bass run is over.

I am up for crappie or Sandies?? Prefer to eat the crappie but the sandies eat just fine and are a little more fun to catch!
Love to fish and hunt.

I'm hooking up with the Simek brothers and hitting some Hill Country river scene soon. Tossing 4lb test on an ultralight Shimano (they will fly fish).

Hopefully pics will be presentable and I will share them here.

Good luck to ya'll, you are not that far from the Yeagua on top of Somerville. There is some excellent white bass fishing in that creek.

BigL has a spot out near Granger that he states is loaded in the river. I've got a good pair of waders and so does my son Austin so the plan is to wade fish casting jigs. At least that's the plan. I might take my bow just in case a hog withdrawal hits me somewhere while we are there :-)

Rob, if we hit them right, we will tear the hell out of them. I fish Granger often, but don't really like fighting the crowds that are often there. Nothing like fighting a white in clear water on a fly rod while listening to turkeys coming off the cedar elm roost! There will be good times . . . .

Point my compass on the correct bearing and I will stoke the coals!

Woo hoo Simek is on board and welcome to the Picou world of fishing!

As they say around here, welcome to the ramp. My ramp is a little salty but that's OK, the beer is cold and the fish always bite! :-)

They must be on the move into the creek if they have left the big water...

Ya'll tear 'em up boys... I really miss the times walking the creek banks w/ ultra-light in hand and muddy feet. I really need to make some effort this year to walk those banks and re-live the simpler times of fishing.

I've got the waders and ultra light gear ready to go Mike.

Sturm I forgot you stated you were fishing in the lake. It's only a week or so before they will go hog wild in the rivers. If it warms up to the 70's this weekend, we might have them running this weekend?
