It was the weekend of our annual bow hunt down at Wes' farm and the decision was made to have a fish fry on Saturday. Since Wes is so confident in his ability to catch catfish we decided that Thursday evening was a good time to have a few cold beers, run a few jugs, and do a little bass fishing. It was fun being back on the water and we started the afternoon with some night crawlers catching bait for the lines -- hand sizes perch. After dropping the lines down we headed around the lake to catch a few bass and Wes proceeded to kick my butt on the bass front. I insisted on running a square bill and he stuck with the old standby -- split-shot. His first fish was a chunky 4 pounder which was quickly followed up by another about the same size. In the mean time, I was struggling to get a bite by anything over 10 inches on the crankbait. I finally switched to the split-shot but was rewarded only with a 12 inch fish and a break off while Wes continued with quality. Ok, almost dark and we were running out of beer in the cooler so time to check the lines and head to the house for a refill. First pass at the lines resulted in a 7 or 8 pound yella-cat and several baits missing but still had 4 of the 9 with bait on them so we headed towards the house. Stopped at one spot and threw the night crawler at some surfacing catfish around a light and managed a decent little channel cat. Back to the house for some beer and food... Went back out and decided to re-bait and check the others. This time one of the jugs was missing so we baited and went on the hunt for the other jug and finally found it with this little cat on it. 31 pound blue: That ended up being enough fun for the night so we headed in. Friday morning we checked the lines early and had 2 bass around 6 pounds, a small blue cat, and this yellow cat -- all released because we figured we had enough fish already for the fish fry. Nice yellow cat: We bass fished for a little while and Wes again kicked my butt fishing on his home lake. Still having fish to clean and wanting to deer hunt in the evening we quit early and headed to the house. Had a great time fishing with Wes and although I got my butt handed to me on the bass front, I kicked his arse catching the perch for bait!!!! I can't wait to get back down there and have some more fun fishing. Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish
