Ok, I've got a small 4 acre lake behind the house and have been trying to catch a few fish the last couple of afternoons. Being that it is cooler, I figured the fish would be deeper and wouldn't chase a faster bait very well. I tried 3X Bubble gum colored floating worm rigged texas style and wacky style. Split shot was added about 12 or 18 inches up the line to get it down and let the worm float a little bit. Nada.

I tried a pumpkin colored grub last night, Nada. Switched to a longer minnow shaped plastic that was clear/white with glitter. Nada.

Switched to a 1/8 ounce gold crankbait with a black back. Nada.

I'm at a loss as to what to try next. Could I just not be fishing deep enough? I'm looking for some suggestions on what to try next. Am I approaching it all wrong and try a spinner bait, buzzbait, or topwater? Usually if they are shallower, it seems like you will see some activity on the top, running mnnows, etc.

Do you have fish in the lake? :-)

Try a small rapala. One of my best lures in small ponds. If not smaller beetle spins or roadrunners. They often hit smaller baits this time of the year.

Split shot Lizard, reeled in real slow. Colors I like are pumpkinseed/chartruse tail or watermelon seed/chartruse tail. Remember to fish it slow and watch your line, a lot of times you won't feel the bite but you can see your line swimming sideways.

I agree with Bigun. Seems like most of the pond fish that I have caught in past years were on a very small bait just like the beetlespin. It was usually a black head with green or white body. Let us know how you do and post pics!

Over the last couple of years when I fish ponds in the afternoons I find the bass up very shallow. I use the splitshot w/ a watermelon fluke jr. Of course, water clarity and structure also play a role in what I throw. Heck, in December I have caught bass on a zara pup in shallow water. The bulk of the pond fish I have caught this time of the year came from the opposite end of the pond from the dam where the water warms much quicker and within 4 or 6 foot from the shoreline.

Good luck...

My favorite for pond fishing (which has been probably 20 yrs ago) is to use Mepps Tiny Torpedo or other small top water baits (silver)over shallow water pulling from shallow to deeper - in other words - across the pond. I'd find an area that I could cast across and work it that way. My memories are of hot summer days though. Good Luck!

Handsdown the best bait will be an H&H spinnerbait. It an $.89 investment. I like the single blade the best in white. Go to Walmart :-)The down side is you have to put the hook on the right way ;)

PS: Catches some hawgs at Fork in the spring too...

Ozziefish.. Been many a year since I fished with an H&H. When I was a kid that and an original Creme worm was all we had. I remember when Creme came out with the purple color. What a bait. Best of my memeory you just put the double hook up on the H&H... Is that right?

I started out with an H&H when I was a kid also and did not fish with them anymore until Oz suggested it last year. The trick -- I think I finally figured it out -- is to thread the hook with it pointing down and by the time you get it around it will be correct.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I went back out and tried a small crankbait again, as well as a clear Gene Larew grub with silver glitter and still didn't have any luck. I never have fished much in cooler weather, so this is all new to me. Just so happened to have a few free afternoons and thought I would see what I could catch. Last spring and all summer you could tear them up on this pond, but the cooler weather sure is giving me problems! I will see what I can try this coming weekend and hopefully have a better report.

Split shot a chartreuse French Fry. Deadly little pond bait! Use a fairly light hook so the bait drifts down slowly. Short twitches, just enough to make the bait dart up, then let it drift down, repeat, repeat, repeat, SET THE HOOK!!!

Good luck! Lemme know if I need to come out there and go fishing with ya, show you the ropes!! :-O

Mmm, We will have to work that out. Looks like I am headed to night shift for a few nights starting Sunday. Maybe the weather will warm up a little and we could plan something in a week or two. I am still wanting to have a TBH get together at our place. Time is at a premium these days though! It's not looking good for the Bownanza this year.

As others have said, I love fishing something small like a roadrunner, or roostertail in those ponds. Grubs on a jig head have been productive for me as well, fishing it slow.

Good luck Justin on those fish.

Ok, I went out again yesterday and today to give it another try. I don't have alot of the lures suggested, so I need to pick up a few here and there, but I managed to get some 4" Zoom lizards. I tore them up last year on a H&H, but so far this year they won't even look at them!

Lisa needed some time to study so I went out this afternoon and thought I would give it a whirl. Put Bryce in the Baby Bjorn and off we went. Even with the rains we had recently the pond was super clear, and as I walked around the bank, I saw fish everywhere up on the top of the water soaking up the ray. I tried a spinner bait first, and it was a no go. I actually drug it over the top of one fishes back and he never flinched. Went inside and tied on the zoom lizrd with a split shot about 18 inches up on the line. I walked down the bank and spotted a nice sized fish. Pitched the lizard in the vacinity and gave it my best. I felt a thump and watched the line move to the left. I let him have it for a second, and then set the hook and pulled up a nice fish that I would guess around 3 pounds, somewhere in there. I kept at it for another hour until I had to come in and get ready for work tonight and ended up with a couple other small fish off the lizard. The biggest problem was keeping it out of the moss at the bottom. They weren't biting much, but it was good to feel a pull on the line again. Hopefully we are through with the cooler weather and it will start warming a little more. I can't wait for spring to get here!

Glad to see you figured them out.

I was going to recommend a 4 or 6 inch plastic worm (red shad or motor oil) with no weight just a split shot for a slow sink (spinning rod for easier control).

Or one of those little 1/4 ounce Rattle traps in a black red/shad color might have worked too?
