Well I'm new to the board and this sure looks like a nice place to hang my hat. This question has been brought to my attention by my wife. If I had to choose one over the other, what would it be? I've been doing both since I was knee high and both have a special place in my heart but if I had to pick.....I'd have to say Fishin'. I could go into great detail on why but I will leave it at that. I just couldn't live with out it. How about y'all? |

Hands down I would hunt. But why choose? You do one in the winter and the other in the spring, summer and fall. Sometimes I even fish in between humts. Welcome Johnny. Now let see those pics of those crappie you caught. |

I would have to stay with fishing, just because I've been doing it longer and can do it all year. I hope I never have to make the decision though. By the way welcome to the ramp. If you're richer than me I think we're related. If you're poorer than me I know we're related. My bass club webpage http://texbass.8m.com/

Welcome to the ramp Johnny... If for some reason I had to choose, I would have to choose fishing also. I love hunting but I really love fishing. Not to mention that it costs me a whole lot less... Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

I'd have to chose Fishing. Hunting for me is too expensive and to much traveling (considering I make two to three trips to Wes in Tx and at least two to Kansas) for no more than I get to do it. But only if I had too! |

Howdy and welcome JohnnyTx! Fishing or hunting. Hmmmmmmmmmm, I get more enjoyment out of Fishing since I can do it more often across a broader range (rivers, lakes, inshore and offshore). I can hang out with friends and laugh all day long. I can cook, eat and smell like smoke and continue fishing. I can sip a beer, sit by the campfire, read a book, check out the scene nearby (summer time) and still be fishing. Heck, I can partake in other activities and still be fishing (horseshoes, poker, bocce ball etc.). Course fishing to me is a lot like hunting. Hit the coast, make a camp, rig up the big rods, sleep out under the stars, study tactics and apply same to the existing conditions (and via yearly knowledge) to increase your catch odds. Once your hooked on a big fish, things get pretty intense especially if it goes over 100+lbs and has a mouth full of teeth. Or in a nutshell. I can think about fishing when I hunt but when I'm fishing, I'm generally too busy and fully entertained with great times to think about hunting.

You pretty much summed it up for me Rob. The surf is a mystical place. You just never know what is waiting in the water over that second sand bar. As you have shown, the Lord paints a beautiful sunset over that open water. Here's a shot I got of Pirates Beach down in Galveston. I can't wait to hit it when the specks are runnin'.

As much as I love to hunt, I'd have to say hunting. But fishing will always be something that I love to do, anytime, anywhere I can. I fish ALOT after deer season ends in between hog hunting -Chad Critchfield-

I would sell every bit of fishing gear I had tomorrow if I had to choose. Hell I would probably give it away if that meant I could keep hunting. Fishing, turkey season, bird hunting, those are nothing but a chance to warm up to the real thing.... Hunting whitetails. Nothing else compares. |

That's a tough one. A couple of years ago it would have been fishing, but maybe hunting now. Heck you can hunt all year long as well. Don't ever shave drunk!

I used to feel the same toward golf as I do about hunting and fishing. Nothing better than playing tournament golf against others and beating them in a match play round. The work to stay at a 7 or 8 handicap is tremendous and it certainly required devoted dedication to practice nearly daily to play at that level. My oldest son Jens and I golfed a ton during my mid 20s - late 30s. Father/Son tournaments, following his Junior High and High School tournaments and playing together on military golf teams. Great times shared with my Son Jens and Father Al really made Golf a driving force above hunting and fishing for me for quite awhile. We hunted a lot and fished a ton but golf was our challenge (beat that best low round etc.). Back in my military life, I didn't have opportuities to hunt everywhere. South Florida comes to mind, so I adjusted to meet the needs. Golf and inshore/offshore angling took priority. Living in the Pacific Northwest, I had to hunt other species (blacktail and mule deer) and that was an absolute blast. But it only lasted 2 weeks so I had golf and fishing (salmon, cut throat, steelhead and rainbows) filling in the other 11.5 months. I measure the excitement from a night before an Outdoor activity or outing as my level of involvement. I get fairly excited knowing the following day is going to be full of of hunting, fishing or golf (like Christmas Eve for a young kid.). At one point in my life when I was young, surfing was another passion I pursued that at times, beat hunting, fishing or golf. Big waves in perfect conditions on a very high performance surf board is a rush that's tough to beat. But it's a brutally tough sport requiring extreme physical conditioning. I burned out by the time I hit my late 20's. In the Coast Guard, you can fish, surf and golf everywhere you went. Hunting wasn't a guarantee in some of the Western States with small hunting seasons. We might be deployed during the entire hunting season for a couple of years straight. Those years really sucked and I had to fly back to Texas on vacation to hunt with my Dad to guarantee an opportunity to hunt. But those other sports...absolutely all the time. |

Welcome Johnnytx. I really enjoy hunting, the adrenaline rush as the deer is coming down the trail and getting the bow ready! But I'd have to pick fishing. I can do it most of the year and take my son most of the time. He really enjoys catching fish, even if they are small! |
