I have been working the night shift for the last couple of nights as a schedule change to make a wedding that is happening this weekend. The last two days I have gotten home around 6:30 a.m. and had to get up around 9:00 a.m. to help Lisa with the kiddo. This morning was no different. I was wiped from working all night and ended up having to get up at 9:30 a.m. so Lisa could get ready to help watch a friends two kids today. They were loaded in the truck and gone by 11:00 and I had the place to myself. The sun was out, it was warm, the lake out back was clear, I didn't have to leave for work until 3:30, and there was no way in hell I was going back to bed! I did a ton of reading last night and had come up with a plan should I get a chance to fish today. I took my ultralight rig with a zara puppy on the off chance they would hit it. I love to watch them blow up on the top. The other rod would have a 6 inch Sluggo rigged texas style with no weight. In my back pocket I carried along a pack of 6 inch Bubble gum colored Strike King 3X floating worms. I didn't have my fishing buddy with me today so as I walked through the livng room to the back door, I snagged the camera hoping to get some pics. I was confident today was going to be good. First up was the topwater. I didn't really think it would work, but figured I would try it anyways. Yesterday there were a bunch of fish up on the top catching rays. I thought if they were doing it today there might be a off chance I could pick one or two up. I fished for a while with no hint of a strike and it didn't look good. I switched over to the rod with the Sluggo. Pitched it out and messed around with it in the clear shallow water to watch how it would ract to twitches and how much I needed to work it to get the action I wanted. I really liked the way it worked, floating slowly down to the bottom and with the slightest twitch it would dart up glide for a short distance and then turn nose down and dive for the bottom. I was confident this bait was going to work. It wasn't but after a few casts, I made a slight twitch and felt a weight on the end of the line, I watched it and it began to move off to the left. I let hm carry it for a bit and then let him have it. I had him up until the first time he broke the top of the water and then spit the hook. After that I fished for a good while with no other hits. Time to switch it up again... I pulled the Sluggo off and rigged up one of the Strike King worms texas style. this is a floating worm, so I added a small split shot about a inch or inch and a half in front of the worm. this allowed the worm to float straght up and down, and just misse the moss at the bottom. Small twitches would make the worm pop up and then dive back just into the moss. When worked, I thought it looked like a worm that was feeding poking around in the bottom. I rigged it up, made a short pitch to the deeper water and started a very slow retrieve. Twitch let it drop back down, pause, twitch, pause, etc. About three twitches and I felt a sharp strike on the line. Off he goes, reel in the slack, and nail him. First cast and the first fish! I continued fishing the small end of the lake where it was shallower, casting into the deeper center, working the bait to the bank. In all, I should have hadva total of 6 fish today, but ended up with 3 total. Three were hooked and came off, or were just tight lipped and never hooked. It was a fun day nontheless. The wind made it a challenge to feel the strike and watch the line. The second fish was alot chunkier than the first one. The first pic doesn't do him alot of justice, so I took a second. Sorry for the pics, I tried to get the fish and rod/reel in the shot to kind of show their size, but my arms weren't long enough! Third fish. A little booger. All in all a pretty good day.......

I have never tried fishing with a pink worm like that. Just never thought it would be very effective. guess I was wrong. It was an awesome day to be fishing. good job. |

Way to go Justin. Texas or Carolina rigged worm plastics are my favorite way of fishing. I don't get all caught up in the name of the worm (too many to keep up with) but the technique is the same all the time. Now since I've seen the water clarity of this pond, I bet Motor Oil colors will work very well too? |

Rob, I never know what colors to get when I am in the worm aisle. I picked up two packs of these 3X worms from Strike King for .50 cents on clearance at Wally world and love them so far. Last summer I fished one, 1, of these floating worms last summer on top weightless and must have caught 20 or 25 fish on one worm. It is still somewhere in the bag, the only reason I used a new one yesterday was I couldn't find the worm from last year!! They are super soft, and you just about can't tear them up! |

The 3x products are pretty killer. We use the flukes/sluggo's around here one the redfish. They can't even tear them up. I'd bet a fireice and a junebug worm would also work excellent in that water. These are my favorite colors around here along with tequilla sunrise with green flake. |
