I found this on TPWD:

quote:

The red snapper season in federal waters is usually open from April 21 to October 31 each year.

I'll be there on the 20th. :-)
Dean do you go that far off in your boat? I don't think I am salty enough yet to attempt it in our boat.

PQ - After looking at the fish you are catching in the lakes (not that they are bad or anything - I'm sure they are tasty) I think about hiring you to catch our bait! The only problem is they might be too small for our bait needs!:-)

Weather permtting - this includes seas permitting - I don't do the 4' seas thing... This summer I will try 25 miles or so then depending on how that goes I want to venture out 45 or 50 miles. Once I went 25 miles out of Freeport and the water clarity was awsome! I could see at least 40 or 50 feet down the rig legs. We could see the fish swimming around the rig and the dolphin(bottlenosed) were clearly visible around us! That was an awsome experience and I want to beat that! I have never cought the big snapper (20 - 30lb) or the big king (20 - 30lb) or the dorado or the tuna or the ling or.... I am very anxious to do that! Damned Weather!! Hurry up and warm up and let the winds quit blowing so the seas will lay up!!!!

Don't forget that you are limited on fuel capacity Dean. You had better get really good fuel economy to make it 45 miles out, fish, troll, then come back. I realize that you have 75 gallons on board but it goes quickly...

If I run off shore with you, I want to catch durado... Kings would be fun on my ultra light spinning tackle but those mahi-mahi are way too much fun... :-)

Dean I've been in way to much bad weather to even think about going that far offshore in any single engine boat especially a bay boat! Be careful and Good luck.

Well - like I said - first I will go 20-25mi out and see how it goes. If it seems too much to go further I'll hire a charter.

I did 25mi in my 21ft sea pro bay boat. That boat is much smaller, narrower, less flotation, and had a Mercury Carburator engine on it.

Naturally - I will be very selective about my day for a long type of adventure.

Afterall, what is the worst that could happen?

Dean,
What we will need to do is get a group of us to go. Take more than one boat. We could bring ours and there is a guy over on Texasrodbenders that takes his boat out pretty regular. It would be a safer event that way.

Worst than the Wes scenario: You could have a younger version Coast Guard ATW trying to recover you in 8 ft seas! :-)

Dean, I hear you! Just people tend to think they are safe in bay boats but they are not made for what can happen out there. What people forget about the open sea is the storms are going to build between you and the land and there is no cover. Read and hear it about it all the time every summer in the New Orleans paper with the N'Awlins retards going out of the river in Venice. The quote always starts like this: "it was beautiful when I left".

I like the mosquito fleet idea but I can never seem to get anyone else to go with their boat. Maybe this site will produce an opportunity for that?

I have seen the thunder storms develop around me at the jetties and that was scarry enough! We've been trapped a few times and I have learned from it. It is amazing how quick the winds can kick up and how cold the rain can be on a 98 degree day, and how close the lightning can be!

I have tried my boat in the chanel at the opening of the jetties under a severe under tow (out going tide) and 6-8' seas forcasted (just for the experience). The current really made the waves act up and stand up. That too was scarry - probably more scarry than the T-Storms on the bay! Not something I want to do again. I considered that a bad decision.

My greatest fear is the lightning! I trust my boat and my ability to keep it right but I have no control over lightning.

The distress on the radio is tied into the GPS - just in case!

So - What do you do if you get cought in a storm off shore (or in the bay for that matter) - if you cannot out run it or make a bad directional jugment call - besides pray?

You guys got me thinking twice about the 50 mile thing but 25 doesn't scare me much.

One day I ran the Galveston jetties and the water was so nice that after catching a near limit of trout in less than an hour, we went back to get big bait and then we went 12 miles out and trolled all day - never shut it off except for maybe a couple hours in the am and burned 16 gallons of gas. I wonder if I tried to, if I could burn 70 gallons of gas in a single day?

You mentioned Venice - I wanna go!! I hear the big tuna are running right now?? I also hear they are catching big tuna 50-60 miles out of Freeport?

You only have to go about 10 miles out this time of the year out of Venice for Tuna. bonita, Mako's and a few wahoo. They call the place the Mud Lumps. Never been. They say you can walk boat to boat out there this time of the year though. You need about 400 ft of anchor rope and chum and wait. Dean, you can go to www.louisianasportsman.com to get reports on daily catches.

I launch from Texas City and found a hot spot 10 miles out from the south jetties. Let me know when your heading out and I will try to meet ya or you all out there. I have a 21.5 walk around cutty and have been up to 30 miles out. I try to go a little further each time I go.

Rodriguez, Nice Bunch Of Fish!!! I am pretty flexible during the week - when do ya want to hook up? I'm Ready!

Last week we went 28 miles out - in the fog no less - and my fuel guage hardly moved! I dont think I'll have a fuel problem. Can't wait to fill it up again to see how much I actually burned. We cought some snapper - like that - but we were in federal water so we released them. On the way in we stopped in state water and did catch our limits! I gave them to my buddy since he has no supply in his freezer. I did keep one and baked it whole - wachenango style (if that is how it is spelled). Sorry Guys - No Pics - Camera battery was dead!

Dean,
I should be getting my boat back this week. I am having a new top made for it. I have to take the family out fishing first. Saturday we are celebrating my youngest boy birthday. So I am taking them out on Sunday to Galvestion Bay if weather permits. The wife does not like to go fishing Offshore so we fish around the bay and the jetties. I will see what the boss lady has plan for us next week. Next week is Spring Break so we do not have to go to work. So maybe next Friday? lets keep in touch.

Rod, What ya doin this Friday? I might head out to the bay during mid morning for the day hunting trout.

Any one have any recommendations where I might find them? Reds would do also. Hell - for that matter, anything would do! Sheephead are probably pretty good at the jetties right now?

I am trying to get out of going to a meeting that my boss has scheduled for Friday afternoon. If I can get out of it I will let you know. I take it that you have your boat out of the shop? Did they do a good job? I am still waiting to hear about my boat. I have it a Custom Marine Concepts Fab. in Spring.

Rod, That is who did my T-Top! I worked with Glenn! He does good work. His office is right down the road from me - maybe I'll go by and see how he is comming along!

My boat is in the fiberglass shop again. They still need to finish their repairs. In addition to that I have another crack in the Gel-Coat in a different area. I am giving serious consideration to the lemon law to see if I qualify.

It is being repaired by Northwest Fiberglass on 2920 - down the road from CMC past Hooks Airpor. I told him I intend to use the boat on Friday - so..

I am glade to hear that someelse has had some work done by CMC. Monday, Glenn had stated that the top was finish but that they are working on the cover for the boat and that it should be ready today. But I have not heard anything yet, I did ask Monday if I would have it by this weekend for Spring Break and he stated yes. Right now with all this rain, I can wait. Once he gives me a call I will let you know, maybe we meet and talk about fishing?

Dean,
Glen called me yesterday and said that I could pick it last but I couldn't. Today I have a meeting that I my boss will not let me get out of. But I may be able to leave shortly after the meeting. I have your cell # so I will give you a call when I am heading up there. It will take me about 1 hour to get up there since I live on the south side of Houston. Today sure is a pretty day, I wish that I did not have to go to work. I should have (caugh, caugh, caugh) called in sick.

Dang weather seems to be gettin everybody down!! Thats OK, I wouldn't have been able to go today either - speaking of being sick! My son has come down with Strep Throat and I dont feel all there either - Hope I dont get it!!!

I am looking at next Wednesday - I have a client in town from England and he would like to try some fishing around here. If you'r up to it and know where to go - let me know - I am also considering hiring a guide in Galveston. I hear that Paul Macarcio (i think thats how it is spelled) is pretty good? Any other recommendations?
