Went out on lake travis this morning and caught a few whites. A little chilly this morning, but turned into a beautiful day here just west of Austin.

Can't wait to get to the coast.

Fished on 2-22 - went 28 miles out in the fog - wish my camera was working but the dog gone battery was dead! Good thing for GPS - We fished until dark and navigated in by way of GPS and keen eye sight! The fog blocked most all of the moon light and created so much condensation on everything that washing the boat down was easy! I am looking forward to being out there when it is a full moon and clear skies - Must be awsome! Next time I'll check the camera battery before leaving.

Glad you made it out and caught some fish... Now go buy a set of backup batteries for the camera brotha...

DEAN and everyone else

carry a compass ive been depandant on a gps, and it is a helluva TOOL but like any tool, it can break.
mine did one night when we were tracking a deer for a customer, and we ended up miles from where we started. lucky for us the power had gone out on the ranch, and an oilfield guy was checking wells. he picked us up and drove us back to the truck. it was a really embarassing time.. and could have turned bad in a hurry

i have a friend that is a pilot and his gps quit on his way home from galveston. lucky for him he had flew the route so much he knew the way home(aside from the required nav charts and nav radio he carried)

point is DONT rely soly on the gps. i carry a compass, garmin etrex(100usd walmart) and either the gps in my truck or the new one in my boat.

i have more lost as hell stories if you want...
learned my lesson, took several times of being misplaced and im an eagle scout!!

My boat has a compass mounted in the console. I do watch it - just in case. I need to learn how to find my bearing on the map though. I have some ideas but have not had to test them out.

I was thinking about taking a coast guard safety course? What ya think? Anyone taken one before?

Just take someone that says: I know it all, trust me. Sooner or later he will find something and then say: See I told you that I knew where to go! If you do not run out of gas first.

I usually have my onboard compass, main GPS and a pocket GPS, just to play it safe. Maps are also good to have.

South ---- Mexico??? Lot of fish around there??? How long will it take me if I run 35mph all the way?

Just in case I do run out of gas - at what point does the wind start blowing in that direction? Half way?

Dean, I'm sure you will be trying to get to Mexico if you get the right maps and right reports! If you run SSW 50 miles out, I would think you can't be to far from Mexico! :-)

I'll stay in my protected waters except for the occasional fall Lemonfishing trip or right invite on the 50'+ boat of my rich friends. I had enough of the gulf from my younger days.

Wade - "I had enough of the gulf from my younger days" - dam son, how old are you?? Maybe you should quit drinking beer in an effort to extend life and enjoy the gulf more??

Ya know what my problem is? I need to get my a@# kicked by a 150# yellowfin or something to humble me!! Maybe I can find a few between Galveston and Cancun?

It's not the beer....it's the experiences associated with the beer! :-) I've just had enough rough water experiences and really got to where I enjoy catching a perch compared to a 50+lb fish. Don't you doubt though that I get the right invite I'm right back out there!

I'll have to let you know when the lemonfish run is on here. You only have about a 45 minute ride and only about 6 miles from the beach. Usually the first weeks of Sept but I've caught them in July also. Plus you can catch a limit of trout before ever running out to catch them. Which BTW is the best bait in the world to use for a lemonfish! Silver Scales fly everywhere!

BTW Definition of Younger days: Before the Second kid! :-)

While I'm only 39, I got lots of sea miles. Remember, I did not get a real job until I was 26! There was a reason I was a professional college student all those years! Too much fishing with a little hunting thrown in.

What is a lemon fish, how big do they get, and are they good eating?

Lets plan a September fishing trip! I'd like to give it a try! I can bring my boat if you'd like?

Lemonfish is a cobia or a ling. 40 to 70 lbs. Fabulous eating. Awesome to catch due to they are very curious and almost always get them to hit within view. Will pull with any fish close to it's weight however they are pretty dumb and can get them early into a net but if you miss...hold on!

You'd have to bring your boat if you want to do that type of fishing. As of this date, I do not have an island boat but I may by then. Working on a deal with another charter guy where I buy the boat and he runs it during the week and/or when I'm not.

Have a nice heavy bat in the boat if you bring it into the boat. We caught one offshore a couple years ago on a party boat and the hands beat that fish like I have never seen anything beat like that before. They worked it over worse than the 4 ft shark we caught.

I dont know, beating a fish with a bat seems kinda cruel, how about bringing a 22 pistol and shooting it before you land it? Is that legal?

I have heard of some people bring a pistol, just have to be careful of where you shoot. Don't want any unnecessary hole in the boat. My friend only hit that shark once to stun it and the other friend lassoed the tail and sliced the tail so that it could bleed. Usually the 3-5 foot sharks I am able to gaff throu the head, instant death.

Landing net is the way to go with these fish. They barely even struggle once in the net. Bring a live gaffed one in you better be getting out the way and making sure no poles or tackle is in the way>

If you like your cooler lids knocked off you can! :-) You bring them in 1/2 fresh and all heck can break loose when they hit the cooler/boat floor. The net seems to just subdue them.

Just depends on size of cooler. Two will barely go in a 170 qt.

Dean,
It was nice to have met you today. I hope that the weather will be good this week so that we can get together. CMC really did a great job on the new half tower that they made. Here are a few pics of my boat with the new top. Otherwise we will have to wait for a good weekend or when summer comes around. I am usually working 4, 10 hour day at that time with Fridays off.
