I need some advice. My 25 hp evinrude won't start. I used it last back at thanksgiving. Before parking it I ran the gas out of the carb, and sprayed fogging oil in the cylinders. I have never had this much trouble out of it before. What should I check first.

spark plug. remove the spark plug, clean it clean out the inside, spray in some engine starter, crank er up. If it doesn't crank up after that then I recommend someone who knows a little more about engines than i do. Although that usually works for me. Meak sure your spark plug is still good too.

Without hearing the motor it's hard to say where to start.

Pull the plugs and lay them against the side of the motor and make sure you are getting a spark. If you are getting a spark, then I would suspect the gas. Make sure the pump ball is holding pressure. I have used a straw to put some fuel into the cylinder directly and try it. I was told that WD-40 makes a good "quick start" fuel and I was also told to stay away from lighter fluid or straight gas because there is no lubricant.

If that is not working, you may have something clogging the jets and you will need to yank the carb and clean it.

Give some more details on how it is acting and I will see what I can figure out. Definately check the plugs and put something in the cylinder thru the spark plug hole and try to fire it up. Let us know how it reacts.

Plugs are new, gas is new, getting plenty of fire. I cleaned the carb and it is getting fuel. I got it started after pulling on it for 30 minutes. I let it run in a barrel for till it warmed up. Killed it and it wouldn't start again. I broke the starter rope, so it will have to wait before I can work on it again.

Sounds like it is time for a Yamaha :-)

Could not pass it up, Just messing. Sounds like you know enough about it if you are tearing down carbs! Could be anything. Wish I could help more!

I wish I could afford a yamaha. I am going to take it to the dealer one day this week hopefully and see what is the matter. I wanted to figure it out myself, but have to work overtime for a couple of weeks and don't have the time to do it.

I have been thinking about it and trying to figure out what would make it a bear to start, then let it run fine once it started. I am stumped...

What about hoses? Pump ball? Heck if I know... Where is Keith when we need him... :-)

I got a suzuki and it runs great. I cranked her up for the 1st time tonight in two years. Didn't get to do any fishing last year. Alls it took was a charged battery.

If it's getting fuel and plenty of fire, it should be running. My guess is one of them is not happening. Unless it's got a major problem like a broken reed valve, hole in the piston, stuck rings or other major mechanical problem, it should be running if your right about the above. Fire plus fuel will create an explosion. I'd like to know what you find out.

I figgered it out last night. I had some corrosion on the armature plate. This was causing it to ground out intermittenly. One minute it would be firing good, the next it wouldn't. The only way I noticed this was by working on it in the dark, and noticing sparks coming from under the flywheel. Cleaned everything and waterproofed the connections, now it starts every time.

That's a good fix. Those motor repairs can get expensive when it's something major.

Great troubleshooting job... Sometimes stumbling on the answer is better than knowing what the problem is. That was a tough one for sure. Glad you got it running right.
