My wife gave me the ok to take just one kid fishing this weekend and fish the whole day. So Corey and I headed to the lake with the hopes of landing some of those big stripers. All of the reports were saying that the fish were on fire and that over 20" fish was about all they were catching. Needless to say, the anticipation was high.... :-)

The alarm went off at 4:30 in the morning and the day had begun. We pulled up to the ramp and one of the local guides was getting his gear together waiting on his clients so we walked over and said hello. He agreed about the way the fishing had been and he too expressed excitement at the impending fish my 6yr old was going to catch.

We hit the water about 7:30 and rolled over to Big Mineral area where I saw some birds congregated so I headed towards the birds and watched for diving action.

They were hitting the water every now and then but not the furious feeding action I would expect for stripers tearing up the shad. The graph showed some fish so we began casting. Maybe 10 minutes into it I had my first hook up. I was pleased and dissapointed at the same time -- fish was about 10 inches long. :-) About 15 minutes later I managed another fish and this one was about 18" long and went right into the ice chest.

I worked with Corey casting her new spin cast rig and tried to get her straighted out on jigging the sassy shad. She had one fish on and lost it as well as missed a few others.

It was pretty cold on the water and Corey was a trooper. At one point it started raining so I put my rain jacket on her and it fit like a dress... :-) She never complained the entire day other than to say she was cold once or twice.

We took a short break for lunch and headed back out in hopes of adding a few more to the ice chest but it was not to happen. I had caught 4 fish by mid morning and nothing else the rest of the day. We certianly gave it our best shot and talking with some of the guides afterwards it seems the fish just shut off. Some of the guides managed a mess of small fish but that was about it.

We were up in Bumcomb Creek and went to run back to the islands and during the trip I noticed that Corey had fallen asleep in the bottom of the boat so I ran around the lake for a while looking for birds working while she slept. I never found any solid bird activity and ended up burning 3/4 of a tank of gas running. When I stopped the boat and woke her up she wanted to fish some more so we gave it a go... I guess that nap made all the difference in the world because she was all smiles when we got the boat back on the trailer.

Sorry that I never got a "On The Lake" picture, but here is what I got once we were home.

All said and done, it was a fun day on the lake with my daughter and she got pretty good with casting her new rod & reel. I look forward to her catching her first fish on it. :-)

I just know Corey caught those two fish but is being a trooper so her dad does not look like a punk! :-) Great trip Picou and Corey.

Great write up Mike. Looks like she had a blast with her old man. Wait a couple more months and those stripers will start schooling on top. I'll start hitting the lake pretty regular in late April. I'll let you know when they are easy picking for a youngster.

Looks like a fun weekend Mike.

Lookin forward to it Mark, she really wanted to catch one but she did not complain going home without. Her main concern was getting enough for a fish fry. I just took out a bag from the last Texoma trip and fried those two along with the others and it was delicious... :-)

I guess I could award myself a Bronze Fisherman but that wouldn't feel right. I do need a backup to give out awards in my absense or when I am the recipiant... Any takers???

Bigun, you need something catchy to award the Bronze Fisherman...

...something like...

Father-Daughter's Best, Equals Two in the Chest!!

Way to go Mike and Corey for sharing a great day on the lake!

That is why I did not volunteer, Audra.
I just did not want Mike to break down crying is all. :-) I'm not creative except to give Mike Grief! Little alone I don't know how to do anything in bold!

We sure don't want our commander-in-chief to break down on us! :-)

Oh, well, now he's got two! One for him, and one for Corey! :-)

Thanks Audra & Bigun... Sound like Audra has officially signed up... :-) Thanks everyone else also... Rob, if they would have bit a little better I would be more hooked... Given the way it went, I would rather have been bass fishing. :-)

I can't wait till they get a little better at casting and can start putting a few more in the boat. We will do our annual night time crappie/sandie trip at the end of April and all I will get to do it take fish off the hook and put minnows on. I can only handle a few trips like that a year... :-) I also take the girls with me when the sandies run up to the discharge at the power plant on Lavon in July & August. When they turn on the girls will have one after another on the line and it is a blast for me and them. I just put my rod down and let them catch. I will be taking my 8 yr old with me on the next Solobass tournament in March and we will see how much of a trooper she is having to spend all day on the lake.... :-)

No problem, Mike. I'll be glad to step in when you are unavailable!

Just glad to see you and your daughter having such a good time together on the lake! Boy, that sure brings back some memories!
