It is all about knowing your territory. Also try tube jigs depending on water color. Red and White and Black and Purple are usually my go getters. |

I use a number 1 or 2 hook tied to a 14 - 18 inch leader. The leader is attached to a barrell swivel attached to the main line with a 1/4 - 3/8 oz slip weight above the swivel. I hook my minnows in the mouth and drop them to the bottom and crank up 2 turns then wait. If nothing then crank up a few more turns, etc... Make sure to pay attention to the depth because crappie will never come down to eat a minnow but will come up a foot or two to get a bite. You have to search the depths and find where they are holding at. They also tend to move depth throughout the night so if you are catching some then they quit, search the depths again and a lot of times you can find them again. Let me know if my rigging description does not make sense. Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Cody, Also, you might try getting a 5 gallon bucket and souring up some horse and mule in a burlap sack. Put the horse and mule in the burlap sack, put it in the 5 gallon bucket, fill with water, put the lid on it and let it sit for a couple of weeks. Just don't keep it in the house. When you go down to the boathouse, tie a rope to the burlap sack and drop it over the edge to the bottom of the lake and tie off to the boathouse. This might help you catch catfish. Remember when you are done to take the bag of feed with you. good luck. Vegatarian: Indian Word for Bad Fisherman

Cody, I do not use the pre-made leaders. I just cut off a 18" or so piece of line. Put weight on main line, tie on swivel to main line, tie cut line to other end of swivel then the hook to the end of the cut line. There is nothing wrong with hooking minnows behind the fin, I just prefer to hook them in the font -- personal preference. Will has a good point, they may have been on top of a brush pile. Forgot to mention, I use this same rig for catfish also but generally use a bigger weight when casting out for catfish and a bigger hook if I know the cats will be bigger. Catfish twist all around when hooked and the swivel keeps them from knotting up my line. Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

We stopped counting at 600 last spring on Conroe. I love tube jigs in 1/8 oz. Wife will in mid April start to outfish the jigs using shiners. I use a small slip cork with the jig as does the wife with shins. M&M

Can't help you much up there. In South la you tie a crawfish or black/chartreuse tube jig 6" underneath the smallest cork that will float it and find banks with no cover. They are not hard to find once they start spawning. |

1/16th or 1/8th ounce jig with a tube bait. tie a loop knot so the jig will hang horizontal. try different jigging patterns. In colder water I like to hold the jig a still as possible. This is also good in the spring when they move into the creeks. If you have trouble holding jigs still try using a small bobber. Sometimes a little twitch now and then will make them bite. If you're using minnows I either tip the jig with one or tie on a crappie hook using a palomar knot. Leave a foot or more of tag line and hang 1/4 ounce weight under the hook. This keeps the minnow from going all over the place which is good if your fishing brush. You can also do multiple hooks with this setup. If you're richer than me I think we're related.
