I have been in several conversations with people that are fishing tournaments or just recreational bass fishing and the statement of "it just came off at the boat" seem to be a re-occurring theme. So, when you set the hook on a bass and loose it... where does this usually happen? It seems to me, and this past weekend was a good example, when I loose fish I always loose them within the first 3 cranks after setting the hook w/ the exception of a couple times that I had the wrong rod for the bait. This weekend I lost 2 bass on a zoom fluke and they were lost almost immediately after setting the hook -- flukes do that to me when I thread the hook wrong. Other times -- I had a medium action really soft rod that I just bought and Wes and I were fishing Monticello. I lost the first 7 or 8 fish I set the hook on. I changed rods and never lost another one that day. Another time I was throwing a crank bait and lost every fish as soon as it came out of the water and shook it's head. I changed to a softer rod tip and caught every fish after that. I consider those to be exceptions because almost every other fish that I can remember loosing occurs right after setting the hook -- unless they break off. What has your experience been with loosing bass -- don't say you never loose fish? Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

That I don't loose them often enough. I never fish for Bass purposely and they always seem to find my hook at least once in a fishing trip. |

You are on to something PQ. Rods really need to be matched to type, weight of the bait and type of fish. The weight of the bait unhooks itself most of the time. A couple of summers ago I was missing so many reds. It would have been annoying if I did not catch so many anyway. It was the rod. 7ft rod that felt stiff but was just real soft in the backbone. Just could not catch up with the red and put a good enough set to plant the hook. Switched to stiffer rod and no problem since. It is a great trout rod though. Most of the bass we catch are not big enough to get off. Reds are a different story. They get off 1st when they get that angle pulling away from you and hook gets enough angle to pull itself out. Second is just never catching up to them to get the hook set. Third they get off at boat when they realize there is a big cajun about to put him on the pit and they make that big first pull. I've been known to pinch a tail or two in my life!
