A friend and I went fishing Friday evening at Galveston. We went off shore for a little while but did not catch any fish. So we dicide to come back and fish in the bay. We also thought that it would be nice to fish all night and so we did until Saturday morning. During the night we mainly caught Gafftops. Then when morning came around is when the fun really began. One thing came to mind that morning and that was coffee. A friend from work had told me about a new instant coffee that he had found at Krogers. So I had purchase a 4 pack of this canned coffee to give it a try. The coffee is made by WolfGang Punk and it tasted great. After some coffee we were ready and we started catching some Huge Black Drums. But we had to release them because they were over the size limit. But we had a blast catching all of these fish and we hope that our luck will hold out so that we can do it again. Here is a list of what we caught along with some pictures.
Kept: 12 Gafftops size 18"-24"
3 Crokers size 13"-16"
2 Black Drums Size 19" and 25"
Release: 12 Huge Black Drums size 33"-36"

Are there enough boats where you were fishing! Geeeez, and I thought the fishing pressure was heavy around here.

Good times had by all it appears. Do you eat gafftops???

Bigun, Yea we do eat gafftops, prefer them over hardheads. The gafftop is almost like the freshwater blue cat. We are thinking about heading back out there this weekend. But I do not think that we will stay the night on the boat this time. It was hard taking shifts staying awake to make sure the ancher did break lose and started drifting. The coffee that we took is self heating. It has a button on the bottom of the can which you press in and causes a chemical reaction heating up the coffee inside within 5-8 minutes. This was coffee was a safer option then taking a camp stove on the boat and making coffee. I will keep you'll up to date. Tight lines and fish on!

Nice Haul! Water looks rather calm! I'm surprised there were no fish off shore!! I am thinking of heading out tomorrow.

I fished last night under fishing lights at a friends house in Sea Isle and cought 1 26" Red and 1 16" flounder before the wind started out of the north - then it died and I couldn't lose a shrimp. I had to drive back to Spring so I was kinda anxious to hit the road anyway.

I've never thought about trying gafftop's I guess. We catch them when in the middle of bird trout and consider them a nuisance I guess.

Good luck to everyone who is going out! I got report the lemonfish are absolutely on fire. Wished I had a boat to go check them out. Hoping to go try at the Al/La roundup out of Grand Isle the first weekend of May.

Dean, wind is suppose to blow like crazy this weekend. I'm going to Wes next weekend. I'll be in Grand Isle the next weekend. If I go out when we are in GI and catch some I'll let you know. If you want to pack it up and visit I can route you to the rigs I always hit for them. There are plenty of bedrooms close together between my house, Steph, and Mike's favorite uncle.

Gafftop and black drum make the world go around.

Gafftop is an excellent eating cat for sure. A real pain to clean though and a good pair of cotton gloves go a long way in handling them. I've been known to nail the head down on a cleaning board just to get one end under control when I cleaned them.

Congratulations!
