Well, I was trying to get ready for the Saturday tournament when my wife told me that Penny was sweating and she was going to sleep in the barn in eager anticipation of the new foal being born. It was not long though when she called me on the phone from the barn telling us to get in there because it was happening. My youngest daughter and I raced to the barn in time to watch the birth of our newest family member -- Ginger. Once Connie got the sack off her and toweled her off I took a picture. We waited a while to give the baby time to get up on her own but she kept slipping on the rubber stall mat that was under the shavings so we went into the stall to give a hand. It is always a pleasant feeling to get covered in birth sack fluids... We got her on her feet and she gained her balance. She was searching for food but could not seem to get the right spot. It just seemed that she was too tall and could not figure out to turn her head down enough. We spent the next hour or so trying to guide her to the nipple but it was no use. The vet said he would come out and to start milking the momma so that we could feed the baby her first meal. Let me tell you, if I never have to do that again it will be too soon... We pumped 300ml of warm milk into the new foal and my job was over... I finally got back to getting ready for the tournament at 11:30pm and my partner was showing up at 3:30am so we could get there in time for registration. The second day of this newborns life was far less eventful than the first and she figured out how to nurse and is doing great. Momma is still leary about letting us too close but allows it. She is getting better every day -- both of them. I have been busy putting up "no-climb" fencing to insure that there is no way the baby can get to where the other horses are as well as other baby-proofing stuff. I have been just beat down and too tired to log in at night and post. Here are some more pics of the baby:
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Congrats on a good looking colt. Be sure to keep them them little ones away. There was a 9 year old boy killed by a mare in Durant last week. He got into the pen with the colt and the mare kicked and stomped him to death. Didn't mean to darken the event but I thought I should share what little I know about the horse community. If you're richer than me I think we're related. If you're poorer than me I know we're related. My bass club webpage http://texbass.8m.com/

Awesome pics! Those babies seem to be all legs, don't they? "Men and fish are alike. They both get into trouble when they open their mouths." - Jimmy D Moore

Pretty cool Mike. My wife took Shea to Equest the other day and she is all into horses now. I showed her these pictures and she keeps saying "I want one, I want one". |
