My neighbor and a friend of his and I are going off shore fishing tomorrow. We haven't decided if we will go out from Galveston or Freeport yet. I'll take the camera just in case we catch any fish. I plan to go about 15 - 20 miles out. I'll have a report next week.

Wish us luck!!

Went yesterday where the seas were forcast to be at 1-2ft.... Yea - Right!!! Mostly 3-5ft with an occasional 6ftr.

Anyway, Went to bed around 11:00pm and wanted to get up at 4:00am. Woke up at 12:30, 1:45, 2:30, 3:00, - well - never really went to sleep I guess. Met up with the neighbor at 4:15 in the driveway. We waited a little for his buddy and then we were off. Got to the ramp a little after 6am. We went out 16 miles out of Galveston. Knowing that the fiberglass support of the center console had already been compromised (cracked) I made it a point to takle it really easy going out. The seas were not 1-2ft as per the forcast - actually pretty consistent 3-5ft and choppy. Took it really easy though. We were about 1 or 2 miles from our rig when we noticed the console was sure moving a lot and seemed really flimsy. We stopped and checket it out. The T-Top was mounted with 4 screws to the deck (2 each side) and also to the console. Well, the 2 screws holding the t-top on one side were snapped in 2 and the other side were st ripped out of their holes. That explained it. We put a fishing line spool under the console to support it where the fiberglass was broken. By the end of the day the spool was crushed. We went on to the rig since we were so close and tied up to fish. My first cast I cought a keeper snapper. We were pumped!! This will be a great day - so we thought. We fished for snapper for about 2 hours and only cought 1 more keeper snapper. We un-tied and tried moving around a little since the seas were making me feel - not quite right - but the winds, currents, and so many other boats were there made it difficult. We tied off to another position and started snapper fishing again. This time we threw a free line off the back and let it sit. About 15-20 minutes later that line started singing!! Kingfish on!! We landed it and threw several lines off the back - forget the little snapper. As a few hours went on the bite was very spuratic. Some times 2 at a time -

and then 20 - 30 minutes of nothing.

We all cought fish though and decided to head in around 1:30 since we did not know what could happen on the way in. We made it to the jetties with out further incident. There were boats lined up all around the outside of the north jetty so we found a spot and eased in. While anchoring down up really close to the rocks - you could see nearly 10' deep. I have never seen Galveston water that way. We started fishing and on my second cast - Bam - I cought a nice trout. We were pumped again!! This is going to be great!! Never saw another trout the rest of the day. Cought some spanish mackerel and a sheep head and that was it.

Here is the days catch:
3 limits Kings (6)
2 Snapper
1 Spec
1 Sheephead
3 Spanish Mackerel

I was nervous about towing the boat home with the t-top like it was and it was recommended that I tie it down with rope to secure it for the ride home - so I did.

All in all - not a bad day on the watter - lots of fun and safe return - not to mention fresh fish in the frige!

Nothing says offshore fishing like tieing the boat together with fishing line...

Congrats Dean on what sounds like a very entertaining trip offshore. Looking forward to having some of that Kingfish the next time I am in town.

Thanks Yall! It was a blast!

PQ - I give the kingfish away - we don't much care for the way it tastes. Normally we catch and release kingfish but these guys wanted it so we kept it.

RE the new boat - I really am afraid I might have the same issues with it. It is hard to imagine only one or two of anything having this kind of consistent variety of issues and reoccuring issues. I looked at the Grady White but the 22ft cuddy was $61,000.00 with out a motor - I Think Not! I have been considering other options as well. A friend of mine has a late 1990's model 22' hydra sport that I am considering putting my motor on and letting Travis sell the new Ranger hull. It concerns me that the T-Top pulled apart from the deck so easily.

Dean, my dad's neighbor has a 22 or 23 Wellcraft cuddy with hard top and rocket launchers I'll bet I could get for a steal. No motor. Just boat and trailer. Would be a much safer boat for what you are wanting to do offshore. I'll try to get you some details.

I heard a story about a bayranger that came disconnected from the truck and rolled down the freeway. The only problem with the hull was scratches and dents.

Charles - the only thing you can do to this boat is break the things that are on it - as I am finding out.

I have considered taking it to Mexico ...... I hear they catch some big bass there:-)

Dean,
I hear that you are now looking into a walk around cuddy. You may want to check on this boat, it is a 23' w/c http://2coolfishing.com/ttmbforum/showthread.php?t=21195. My family, friends and I have really enjoyed our w/c. Wellcraft and AquaSport are basically the same boat, both are made at the same plant. Just that the AquaSport is the Chevy and the Wellcraft is the Caddy of the two. I purchased my boat ( AquaSport) for $35,000 total four years ago. But my wife wanted a I/O (V-8, 5.0) not an out board, which is fine because I got to purchase a boat. The draft with engine up is 15" and with engine down is 34". The wife and kids love the cuddy for their privacy. I love the why the boat handles and with a 100 gallon gas tank you can go out pretty far. Good luck in finding a boat, here are some pics of my boat.
