I have never been on Pay Mayes Lake but this months club tourney was out there an it was time to learn it.

Lots of people I talked to told me to throw Scum Frogs in the pads so that is how I started. I could not buy a bite on the frog so I switched to splitshot french fry and some carolina rig fries but that did not produce anything either. I finally figured them out and boated my first fish after 10:00am. I broke one off (not a big fish either) and lost another one that must have just had the plastic in his mouth because I saw the gills flare, set the hook, the line tighted and the hook came flying back towards me. I thought it had broken the line by the sound of it but I still had my hook. In my mix of fish I also boated a crappie and gaspergoo -- if only that goo was a bass... :-)

Well, I ended up catching 10 or 11 fish, weighed in 3 fish for 6.49 pounds total. My biggest fish of the day was this 3.6 pounder.

3_pounder

Most of the fish I caught were short fish and the other two I kept were 14" and some change but very thick.

Hawlin Bass is fishing today and there are more members fishing tomorrow also so the verdict is out on big stringer and big bass for the tourney.

That is a pretty nice lake and I really like the shoreline contour. I just wish the snot moss was not all over the reeds. I may have to go out there again with the girls and give it another shot.

Good going Picou! I beleive you are leading at the moment and have big bass. I didn't fair as well. I caught one fish early at 7:30. The fish swirled by some lilly pads and I threw in the middle and got lucky. I didn't get them figured out. tried alot of different techniques but no luck. I guess I should change my name, huh!

Mark and I were talking about it earlier today and I am suprised that my weight is still in the lead -- I'm not complaining of course... :-) I'll spill what I figured out to get lots of bites out there tomorrow night. I just wish I would have gotten on that pattern earlier in the day.

How did the others who fished today fair? I am going to be on pins and needles waiting to hear the final results from tomorrow.

Charles... You got a lot of room to talk -- how many times have you got a check??? I am at least 10x in the hole to date. I need to win a boat or something to at least break even. :-)

That's it. I'm voting for Texoma again on the next one.

Way to go figuring them out PQ. I'm stubborn sometimes and refuse to give up on certain baits. I was lucky to get that 1 keeper. Bring on the night tournaments.

The one thing that this club tourney fishing has taught me is to go with my gut. Two of the lakes so far I had never bass fished them and I listened to everyone else tell me what I should be throwing -- what generally works for them. Well, weather changes, conditions are always different, and what worked one day may very well not work the next. I finally went with my gut on Texoma and boated some fish. I finally followed my gut on Pat Mayes and it put fish in the boat also. From now on I will just ask what colors seem to be the best for these new lakes and then make my own mind up when I get there. I have been chasing these green perch for a long time and I should have a little more confidence in myself.

I had that fluke tied on the whole morning but stuck to the frog because everyone said it was the bait for that lake. Kinda funny how when I started throwing the fluke it changed everything. The pattern seemed to be that the bass were in 2' or less in the pads and where the perch were spawning. If I was not seeing perch up shallow I did not get bit. I assume that the spiked tail on my watermelon fluke looked like a wounded small perch to the bass. Some fish swam up to it slowly and took it in (or turned around) while others raced to it and inhaled it. I shook off 3 smaller fish because there were bigger ones close by. The other thing I did was when I spooked a fish I would just sit tight and let him calm back down then pitch way past and work the fluke back.

Maybe that frog would have worked had I thrown it in these same waters where I was seeing bass and perch. The whole time I was throwing the frog I never saw any perch or bass in the pads -- and I got way up in them also.

Robert & Mark... Let me know when you find out the results from today's fishermen... With this cloud cover I bet they did pretty good today because that should have pulled the fish out of the pads and got them a little more active. I expect a couple of full sacks to be weighed in today. It also might have pulled some of the bigger fish up.

Hey Mike, I agree that the guys probably did do better because of the cloud cover. Mark will hear later from Ron and then we'll know. I fished the pads also but I didn't try and get too shallow because the water temp was at 80. I didn't think that they would be that shallow. Not until 1:30 when I went into a small cover and found what you described. tons of small perch and small bass. found one on the bed but couldn't get him to bite. try again next time.

8 lbs won it. 6 something was big bass. I think PQ is going to be 2nd or 3rd. There was also a 6, 5, and 4 weighed in today. No limits, just single big fish. Winning stringer was 3 fish.

I had a feeling it wouldn't hold but I kept hoping... :-) That does not suprise me that more big fish were caught. Several days of beating sunshine and then a cloudy day... Looks like I picked the wrong day to fish. Maybe I at least get my entry fee paid for the next tourney. Had I just not broke that one off or missed that other one -- shoulda, coulda, woulda... :-)

Thanks for the update Mark
