I was weedeating around the house foundation yesterday when I found this bad boy... This is the second one I have found since we moved there in 1996. I am about ready to move back to the city... :-)

Is that one of those funnel web spiders you see on the discovery channel that catches jackrabbits for breakfast and supper?

Tell me you didn't kill that tarantulla! There use to be tons of them around here but not anymore. My son also suffers from arachnaphobia, you should have seen him in the boat sunday, had one on the boat console that was 1/4 size of a penny. He almost jumped out!

It is a tarantula wasn't it? I was thinking it was a Brown Recluse and he had it in a pill bottle. Man you shouldn't have killed the tarantula. Hawlin is right about that. They are a very beneficial organism.

Thanks Bluecat, I don't care what they say either... :-) Spiders don't live long when I can get to them. I have killed recluse spiders in the house, in the garage, in the shed. I kill most spiders I see except Orb & Garden spiders that stay out of my way. Wolf spiders are left alone outside but come in the house and it will be killed. All other spiders are generally killed on sight.

What makes this terrantula so special? If they ate a bunch of hoppers I suppose he would be worth having around. But they absolutely creep me out and I cannot handle the thought of one getting in the house. If I can see the fangs, I don't like it... I flipped that thing over and it just looks mean and dangerous. They are venomous also and I just can't take a chance of my girls going for a ball in the bushes or something and getting bit by one.

Sorry fellars, big spiders die around here until someone is willing to make the drive and relocate them -- far, far away...

Robert, LMAO.... I am not quite that bad anymore but I certianly use to be. I one time almost wrecked my truck because a spider had made himself at home on the rear view mirror. When I finally got to the house I crawled out of the truck and got my room mate to kill it. Now a days I just kill them and be done with it. I know they kill a lot of insects and that is why if they stay out of my way I generally let them live.

Still, I HATE spiders....

Mike, Tarantulas are really a reclusive spider, they aren't very aggressive and are not venomnous. If you got bitten by it you would probably get an infection, but it's because of the bacteria on it's mandibles. I can understand about you not wanting spiders in the house, but in the wild Tarantulas do eat many other insects and are usually beneficial in that reguard.
If you would have let him get over being whacked with your weed whacker, he would have settled down and you could handle him, they're really not aggressive.. Next time you run across one,, think about it...

I understand that they eat a lot of other obnoxious and harmful bugs - even the recluse! I think they are territorial with other spiders - just think - you made room for the recluse to settle in!!

Tarantula's are good spiders and are essential to any good home! Feed it, give it water, make it at home and it will serve you well! We have a big wolf spider living in our garage. Roach and Bug Controll!! You know Susie -- She loves living creatures!!:-)

tarantulas are great pets as well. you can let them crawl all over you and they won't bite unless provoked. And they eat tons of insects.

I'd worry more about other bugs like Wasps, Ants, and Bees in the yard.

Oz, LMAO!!!!

I am not a big spider fan but will leave most of the ones outside alone. Had a house in KS that I would find Brown recluse in ALL the time. I would fog and be fine for a few months and then start seeing them again,,,,,,,, Still wonder how I did not get bit.
Love to fish and hunt.
