Does anybody here use them often? Any suggestions on some good ones to try that have worked for you in the past?

I love to fish topwaters when I can. Had a little fun last night with one behind the house and was wondering how many other people fish them frequently and had good luck with them.

I ened up getting home a little earlier than normal last night, so after the baby was asleep and dinner was cleaned up, I headed out for the lake to try to stretch a lip or two. First I was throwing a Tony Aceta Pet spoon and ended up pulling three from right out the back gate. It was a little slow on the spoon, so I went back in and thought I would like to throw a popper and see what I could get to rise. First blow up came on the second cast. The lure hit the water, I let it sit, then popped it twice. Before I could get a third pop on it, he came up form underneath and sucked it under. I went on to catch 5 bass, two or three were caught but came off somewhere between the hit and the shore, at least 4 or 5 strikes that either me or the fish missed, and 1 mean sunfish that hit a lure that was half it's size. It was a fun night. I didn't get any pics since I was alone, but I have two of my wife's nephews coming into town tonight sometime, so I imagine we will be hittin' 'em sometime this coming weekend. I will try to get some pics then.

The classics: Pop-r the clear one with the red front and black stripes on it, chug-bug in chrome/black chrome/blue, and Tiny torpedo-clear.

Have caught many late afternoon bass, and sand bass on these babies.

I personally like to "walk the dog", but that takes some practice. I'm not a pro at it, yet, but I've caught several on topwater with that technique.

Topwaters my favorite! I through a buzzbait a lot. This will let me cover more water.

I also like chug-bug like Dale said. If you throw a chug-bug, Pop'r type bait tie a Rapala knot. That knot will give it more action. Here's a link to several types of knots.

I love a buzzbait on a rippled surface. If the surface is calm, I do not throw buzzbaits. I used to be a pop-r freak but I started throwing the zara-pup several years ago and I absolutely love that bait. I have caught sandies, hybrids, bass, perch, catfish, and stripers on the zara-pup.

Wes and I had a day on Lake Bohnam that we boated 52 bass between dawn and 1:00pm on buzzbaits mostly. I caught a few on pop-r just trying something different, but as his numbers began to surpass me I went back to the buzzbait. It was in May with some wind and overcast skys until 1:00pm. As soon as the sun broke thru, the topwater bite ceased.

Also, I personally prefer a 1/8 oz with metal blades.

I like a zara spook jr. It's between the puppy and the large one. I also have been using a poppin frog lately with great success.

I may tie on a Zara puppy next time and see if they are willing to hit it. I was using one of the Heddon Pop R's because I thought the Zara's might be too big for the small bass in that lake right now. Most of my fishing is in places where most of the fish are small. Just about all of my tackle is 1/8 ounce and smaller. I do have some larger stuff, just don't ever get a chance to use it! LOL! :-)

Heck, my biggest fish on the zara-pup is a 8.3 pound catfish. My biggest bass on a pup is 7.5 pounds. I enjoy that bait way too much.

I love topwaters!

My favorite, if you wanna spend a little more money is the Yo-Zuri popper, perch pattern. In 3 hours, I caught 26 bass weighing anywhere from a pound and a half to six pounds. They would tear that thing up!

I also like to fish the Zara Spooks, the fish always fall for the walk the dog pattern.

Chug Bug's are among my favorite also.

I always have a black Zara Spook tied on at first light. I use the bait January thru December. You wouldn't believe how many bass over 6 pounds I've caught in the winter on a Zara Spook at first light.

Years ago I loved the Pop-R. I got them at Jim's Tackle Shop in Spring. He would special order them for people. I slayed bass on them until they began mass producing them. Still a good bait, just not as effective.

Dale, they sure did. Those Illinois city kids got to pull in a few. I have a few pics, but it will be a little while before I can get them loaded. Things are crazy right now! the weekend was not without casualty though. We had a little excitment Sunday......

Sunday we had the BBQ and a mess of relatives on my wife's side of the family over. The kids wanted to fish, so off we went. We were into it about 5 minutes and the 4 kids paired off in teams and we had a full on fishin' Touney going on in the backyard! Complete with trash talk and everything. There were 2 5 year olds, a 7 year old and a 9 year old girl. It was hilarious. It went on until the 5 year olds got bored and wanted to go inside ot play. the other two stayed out and kept at it. My brother in law's 7 year old Michael, was fishing with his Dad and I was watching Katherine, the 9 year old. I turned my back for one second to put something in the tackle bag, and I hear "Watch it! OW!" As soon as I heard it, I knew what happened. I turned around and stood up and there is Katherine with Michael's little spinner hanging out of the side of her bicep! She said it hurt, but wasn't throwing much of a fit. I cut the hook off the body of the bait, and tried to work it out. No bueno. I decided to take her inside to see what her momma wanted to do, take her to the doc and let him do it, or let me take care of it. Luckily, my brother in law and I had a discussion about pinching down the barbs to make them a little easier to get out, and for instances just like this earlier the day before. This was the lure I pinched them down on. BUT, I guess I didn't get this barb quit down all the way, cause it was kind of hung. Her momma held her and I ended up grabbing it with the pliers and jerking it out as quick as I could. She hollered, but it was all over about as quick as it happened. We took her in and put some peroxide on it, and she walkd outside, grabbed her pole and commenced to pitching her spinner bait again! I was kind of scared she wouldn't want to fish anymore, but I guess she's ate up with it. I teased her later asking her if she was "hooked" on fishing. :-) She just gave me a look and said "NOT Funny!!"

When we first moved to the subdivision we took her fishing with us when her other Uncle and I went to the dock one day. After that she was so pumped about it, I went out and got her her own spinning rod, and tackle box and a mess of little lures. Now she wants to fish all the time when she comes to the house. Her and her momma recently moved into the same subdivision, so I imagine we will be fishing alot more now. I just have to get time to take her.

I will try to get those pics up as soon as I get a chance.

On the top water issue, It has literally been years since I have done serious fresh water fishing (soon to change) but topwater are a favorite for specs and reds when they will hit them.

I will try to get them up tonight, but there is no guarantee's though. The two nephews are pretty ate up with the fishing bug as well now. Even if they weren't catching anything they were having a blast just throwing those spinners and reeling them in. When they left they were already talking about "next year". :-)

I'm with fishinaggie88 with regards to topwater for saltwater. I use topwaters in the winter over shallow mud flats. I tore some reds and specks up last January in the Rockport area on topwaters.

My parents have a house in the 10,000 Islands area in Florida and we tear up snook on a regular basis. Also, you haven't been fishin' until you have a tarpon blow up on a topwater!

Texasag87;

Never caught a snook or tarpon. Grew up on the Texas coast. I have friends that I fish Lousianna (Chandaleur Islands) every spring and POC every fall. We are kicking aroung going to Florida this spring. That would be blast to hook up on some of those.

I've caught a many a fish on floating gold and black and perch rapala's barely twitching it on the surface. Fish can not stand them in clear water. Absolutely drives them insane. I used to love fishing this way but since I mainly saltwater fish anymore seems I'm always walking the dog, popping a bug, or buzzing a weed bed for a redfish. Hot topwater bait here this year has been a scum frog for the redfish. What a rush!!!
