Well, it is that time of the year again when Wes and I throw our hats in the ring to compete in the annual Skeeter Swarm on Lake Fork. Last I checked, as of May 31st there were already 852 anglers registered for the event. I anticipate it topping off over 1000. It will be total koas with boats in every nook & cranny. Not too sure why we put ourselves in this position every year but we do. One thing is for sure... We will eat good staying with Oz and have a lot of laughs.

We are changing our game plan this year and hopefully it pays off. I just bought a bunch of new stuff from Sportsman's Warehouse in Lewisville and other than restringing a few rods I am set to go. The batteries are charged and raring to go.

Depending on how tired we are after fishing I may post some updates throughout the weekend from the cabin.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Good luck to both of you and remember, fish deep, fish slow and don't rush around the lake with that many boats. Find a spot and work it real hard because the other spots might be taken? I hope you had a chance to fish this past weekend in a pre-tournament strat?

Don't listen to Rob. Burn the banks and weedbeds with Topdogs and buzzbaits. PQ, do you feel like you have an evil angel on one shoulder!

Seriously Good luck and do what you guys do best. Don't let Wes drink to much the night before (which is really what he does best) and for goodness sake pick up the tequila!

Liar:-)

I'd camp out on Dolly Parton or The Dinner Table and throw Storm Wildeye swim baits. Plan on geeting to these spots around 1:00am and don't leave until you have a moby .

I seriously doubt that we will be able to wake up at 1:00am... We will definately be fishing areas like that if not one of those explicitly. I went and got some special baits, especially for this trip. The question is which place to go to. Hopefully Friday prefishing will give us a clue which location to start.

Bigun, I have been looking for some Top Dogs around here and cannot find them. They have another one out that I like too. It is a suspending jerkbait that looks awesome. I also want some Popa Dogs too. Hopefully the next time I am in Houston they will have them at Academy. None of them up here carry it.

Speaking of fishing slow Rob, that would probably be the thing that stuck out the most from the E50 -- the pros talking about slowing down. Another interesting thing that was said was not worrying about fishing water someone else just buzzed through, just go in there and fish it slow -- each stump multiple times from all angles. Wes will be the first to tell you that I am one of the most impatient fishermen. I pitch to a stump 1 time and move on. Dead sticking a bait is tough technique for me to do. If the boat is tied and we have not boated something in 10 minutes I am ready to move. This weekend will be a true test for me -- and Wes' ability to put up with me in the boat... :-)

Yes, I believe Wes mentioned somethinb about your preferred fishing technique over beers last night. For some reason "run and gun" seems to sound familiar!!

Mike I watched the Bass Champs series on the Outdoor Channel last night and most were throwing DD 22's in 6 to 8 foot of water around stumps. Good luck.

This is always a fun tournament, but by sunday after noon we always say we aren't going to fish it again. This year they moved it up another month, last year was July, and I think the year before was august, so hopefully it will be alittle cooler this year. The plan this year is to not run-n-gun. We will see if Picou can do that or not.

Wes and Simek, that is the cajun coming out in him! It drives me nuts to fish like that also. Not the technique you use around here. If they don't bite about every 5 casts it is time to go!!! Good luck. You two will need it. I think I'll just stay around here and catch REDS. SIMEK U sure you don't want to just come here instead of PINS.

Bigun, it's a Bill Norman crankbait. Supposed to run about 17 feet deep but they were throwing it on 20lb test line so it wasn't running as deep. It has a big bill so it deflects of wood better than most crankbaits.

Topdogs are Killer on Bass! PQ still laughs cuz I caught a bass on Fork on one in freezing cold water! He kept calling me stupid for fishing with one!

I knew I had heard the terminology but could not put my finger on what it was! Thanks. I don't know anything about a bait that needs to get 17 ft deep! I don't even know where I could find 17' a water around here! :-)

Also, are the Storm Wildeyes working for bass for real??? They are killer on the speckle trout around here. Have not had much luck yet with them on reds. The bluegill is the one I have had best luck with so far. They Berkley versions are working well also and seem to be tougher than the Storms. Sorry for hijacking your thread CUZ! Just curious.

Thanks for the tip Dru.

Yea', I remember that day you were tossing that Top Dog... I also remember the 6.5 pounder I caught on that red trap that day. That day, as with every time we have fished together, was a great time. Lots of laughing, cutting up, and fish catching. That was also the day you snapped the tip on one of my rods... :-)

I am hopeing to get some Sweet Beaver on Thursday before heading to the lake. I think Wes got some today during lunch. I also got some Trixies on the way and some Flirts... :-) I could not bring myself to buy the Big Unit for this trip or the Ball Breakers so hopefully we will have enough.

I talked to a very reliable source a few seconds ago. Seems the pattern on Fork the last few days have been Carolina rigging a little george in 2' of water:-)

You can only weigh in 1 fish per hour so no need to look for a limit. Looking at last years payout, under the slot fish had to be heavier than 2.4 lbs to get a check and most of the time it took 2.6. The 8:00am hour on Sunday had smaller fish but all other hours took a 2.6 to take 3rd place hourly money. That really narrows it down to a fish between 15 1/2" - 15 31/32"... :-) But, if you catch an over, that will almost gaurantee money in the hourly and overall. There is alway that remote chance that there will be more than 3 overs weighed in during a single hour.

I forgot the tournament was a big fish format. I guess the same principals apply. I plan on going somewhere Friday night. Probably either Texoma or Bonham. I'll let you know how I do and may be we can plan a night trip before this next tournament.

Wes called me from the lake and said he snapped a 7' Med-Heavy All-Star on a fish already. Never could turn it. Fish was pulling drag and then the rod gave way just above the closest eye to the reel. Said the rod smacked his hand pretty hard and it is swollen and bleeding.

Hopefully he has stumbled onto something here and his equipment will handle the next one.

Well, it was a great time with great friends. We caught several bass but nothing worth weighing in. There were 1497 people entered in the tournament and the largest fish weighed in was a 10.52. There were 6 or 7 over the slot fish weighed in over the two days.

I did not take any pictures all weekend but probably should have taken a few. It was hot, crowded, and tough fishing. Most of the fish were still shallow so our deep plan failed us. We gave it a go and ended up with a rubber duck to show for it -- actually the prizes for finding the rubber duck... :-)

We did drink a little beer and eat some pretty good food while we were there... :-) :-) :-)

Thanks again Ozziefish for opening your home to us for the weekend. Hanging out with you during this tournament is more than half the fun -- and watching The Incredibles & The Big Labowski. Looking forward to next year...
