Took the wife fishing Tuesday and Wednesday last week. The kids were gone so we decided to get away for a little excursion. We fished the Jetties Tuesday early afternoon but there was no bite. We decided to head off shore for a short trip - seas were at 2ft+- and settling. We went 16mi out and out but the only bait we had was live piggy perch I cought for trout & red fishing.

When we got to my favorite spot we tried drifting away from the rig pulling bait behind us. The weather was good and we could see what appeared to be mackerel or something tearinmg up the water on the other side of the rig. As we prepared to move something hit one of our drigfting lines - It started screaming. I had Susie grab that rod while I went to pull the other one up. Unfortunately they were tangled or something and when I pulled it up the other line with the fish on snapped.. Bummer... We tried that again and also went to the schooling fish but could not get the fish to bite anything we had - they were definately feeding though. After all, that day we had 4 BIG hook ups, 1 line nearly spooled with 40lb test and decided to call it a day and see about catching the sunset trout/red run on the jetties.

On the way in when we were nearly to the jetties we took a wave over the front and torpedoed it - not anything you would have expected - totally a normal wave/swell. We took so much water over the front that it knocked Susie completely off her feet and left a good 6 inches of water in the cockpit. Susie may have fractured her arm where she hit it on the seat rail when she felw back - it was purple and blue and swolen the next day - and still is.

This is the 3rd time this has happened to me (but this is the worst) on this boat. 2 times around the jetteis and once in the channel. I blame it on the design of the boat. The bow actually dips down. Otherwise I have had water come over the front and back and sides while tied off to the rigs and drifting in the windy bay.

Well, Wednesday the water was glassy so we went to the jetties and cought some reds and trout but the thrill was gone and Susie was hurting. Came home early.

I think - if that was my daughter, she would have been hurt much more seriously and maybe even thrown out of the boat. I think of prop chop and it makes me sick - F^&#)&@ Ranger Boat!!! I Got a really bad deal...

This weekend we had Susie's family over and after they have seen Susie's arm and hip and leg, none of them - including my wife and kids - want to go fishing with me on this boat... UNLESS it is in the back bays. (Shoot - I just need a john boat for that) I guess I don't blame them though.

So - Question - Has anyone ever torpedoed their boat or seen someone else do it and what were the circumstances behind it. Were they salt water boats? I can understand threatning weather or ship wakes but how about under normal conditions?

Anyone know anything about safety laws?

I have a few pics but left them at home. Nothing too exciting anyway..

Dang Dean that sucks. We were fishing the Jetty Saturday and it was nice except for the wakes from the bigger boats coming by. We were in a 19' Key Largo. It has a real high front and we have been through some good waves on it. Never torpedoed it though. Just have to stand up when you go over a wake or your cajones will be up with your tonsils. We cut right through the wake left by the ferries.

BTW the jacks, spanish and ling where really working the end of the jetties Saturday. Free line some mullet under that sea grass the was floating in. :-):-):-) Pic later. Digital Cameras don't float and it takes a while to get disposable developed. :-)

Dean,
I hope that your wife is feeling better and I hope that it will not stop her from fishing. A while back when we first purchased our boat we were caught in some bad weather. I sent the wife and kids into the cuddy to keep safe. The water had become real rough and then the nose went under it came up real quick! The water just went over and around the cuddy going off to the sides, just like in a movie. This is one of the reason why we are really happy with the type of boat that we bought and we have been very happy with it.

Doubt it I am a member on the same board. Besides it is salt water based and this one is fresh. My posts are still here and so are Dean's.

Bert... quit being a sissy.... :-)

As far as being members of other fishing boards, I am a registered member on several. Now, anything that references my site fishingtexas.net has been blocked by TFF which kinda pisses me off but oh well. They have also locked me out of my profile and deleted the text I had in it. I guess posting pictures from the E-50 with all my FTN gear was too much for J.P.

Looking at all the threads, it looks like something happened and all posts after June 20th that are gone. There was probably a crash and he restored from the latest backup. I cannot find anything specific that could have caused this so I will need to check with my host and see what happened. That is the first time in 3 years I have lost information.

I do not admin the server, just my domain.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Dean great trip report and sorry about the torpedo incident. Hope the wife is ok?

I've torpedo'd a lot of boats in my life and they all were designed for the conditions. Your Ranger is fast and flat with a very low bow and next to nil in rake. With that stated, you can get offshore on literally FAC days (Flat A@@ Calm) and pop a ground swell at speed and lose all planning capacity of the bow with the result of a buried bow slicing through as you experienced in this situation.

I would recommend running her a lot slower than you normally do offshore. Ground swells are freaks that roll in to shore from storms or high wind conditions hundreds of miles away. These ground swells blend into the calmer surrounding waters and can literally only be 2 or 3 ft high but running in on them, you don¡¦t see the face as well. Rough conditions in bays or lakes, waves are literally chop with a 3 or 4 ft vertical faces over and over again, and you are forced to run that stuff slower making your bow work up and down hydro dynamically. Offshore, the swell is your enemy and running with the waves will force the bow to dive deeper into the back of the wave to a point it literally buries the bow before it wants to release and rise.

I¡¦ve watched FAC water with freak ground swells that bump up with next to no warning. Running into them it¡¦s easier to spot than running down fetch.

We ran skinny water boats on the inside and left them there. Offshore, we went to the center console Sea Ox, big Boston Whalers or long Rigid Hull Inflatable boats with inflated rubber bumpers. The reasoning was the ground swell situation that the open sea inherently has. A 2 or 3 ft ground swell doesn¡¦t sound like much but the energy in those waves is unbelievable. They literally run 10 ¡V 20 ft in depth below the water surface with the energy moving 5 ¡V 8mph toward shore.

Next time, spool up a couple of Penn 4/0 with 65lb Spectra line and a couple of stout boat rods for the next trip offshore. Heck, give me a call and I¡¦ll bring a couple of stout rods along to stop the next freight train offshore :-)

Rob - Sounds good! If I have the boat back next week - do you wanna go? I like to go on weekdays when possible.

BTW - A buddy has found a 1992 or 1993 26ft StarLite or something like that with a chevy 350 engine in it. He brought it from Michigan. I have not seen the boat yet but I want to go look at it. He says it is immaculate! We might go halves on it if it is a good deal. Then I'll have 2 boats...

Dean I plan on being in Houston next week from Tuesday - Friday. Problem is, I'm in a Technical Training class from 0900 - 5:00 pm

Maybe one of these days I'll take a day off during the week and drive over with the stout gear.

Agree with Rob! Bay boats are great with chop but when it comes to rollers you better hang on and get ready to be wet. They will take it but your body may not.

Bert, can call me, Ag, and Jas out on the "other" site but can't register over here! What a sis!
