My son Austin and I are rolling down to PINS for literally 3 days of surf fishing. Blacktips are feeding in a grand way on the 3rd sandbar and beyond and folks are now hooking tarpon and huge jack fish as well. I'll share pics and action stories next week when we return. Yeah Haw!!!!

Austin and I setup camp Friday afternoon at 28 miles (Big Shell). Tide was high and we fished dead shrimp in a 2 - 3 ft running surf (clear water). Non-stop hard heads till midnight. I tossed spoons and rattletraps in the surf with nothing hitting before sundown. Went to bed hoping the morning would improve. Saturday morning hardheads every cast. Tossed silver spoon and rattletraps with no hits...nothing and the seaweed was real bad. Decided at 0830 to roll to the Port Mansfield jetties. Not many folks on the beach fishing at all due to the conditions. Drove the next 30 miles in 3 grueling hours. Sand was way soft and the tide was way up. I managed 15mph on good stretches. We finally hit the Port M jetties and find roughly 7 or 8 camps setup with folks all over the place at noon or so. So we jumped out and cast spoons, rattletraps and soaked dead shrimp. Caught a huge pile of hardheads and one good sized whiting. We iced the whiting and decided to wade the Port Mansfield channel. Nothing at all. So we cooked an evening meal around sun set and thought about setting up camp. We looked at the area we generally setup on, rocks are exposed everywhere. After a quick decision we realized the tide was low, way low and the evening fishing was going to be worse at low tide so we made the decision to drive back up the beach at low tide. I knew well if we camped down at Port M jetties, the next day was going to be a high tide, ride next to the dunes at a crawl kind of day before we could hit asphalt. Austin drove all 60 miles up the beach Saturday evening. All the camps we drove around the entire length didn't have one rod in the water and the seaweed was piled up in places over 3 ft deep! It looked like a giant highway grader scraped the beach and let the blade pile it up in huge chunks. Got back to Austin at 0330 Sunday morning, slept in and cleaned my gear all day. Next time I go to PINS, I am playing a high tide at 10pm - 2:00 am with low tide during the day. We had things backwards and with the water that clear and warm (86 degrees) the fishing during the day slows way down. Too rough to yak offshore too so I didn't even float the yak this weekend. We had a REAL GOOD time though Scene at Port Mansfield. This many and no fish.
