Lightning kills Carrollton man
Associated Press

QUITMAN - A 52-year-old Carrollton man was struck by lightning Saturday while fishing on an East Texas lake and died instantly, a state game warden said.

Peter Michael Dimercurio and another man were in a 20-foot bass boat in the middle of Lake Fork shortly before 9:30 a.m. when a storm began rolling in. Lightning struck the boat before the fishermen were able to return to shore, Warden Ronny Ward said.

Dimercurio was killed. The other man was uninjured.

Quitman is about 90 miles east of Dallas.

I don't do open boats on lakes in lightning for that reason.

Spent many a year in storms on ships at sea. Covered cabin/wheel house with a mainmast that grounds to the hull when hit by lightning. Open boats have no safety in design.

I've watched and been trapped in that stuff as it rolls in on Fork. You have no idea it is coming until it is on top of you. That lake scaries me. Scary STUFF!!!

I caught this on the news and Bigun is right, with all the tall trees around if you are in a cove you may never see it coming. I got caught up in one a few years back and the only way I knew it was coming was the nervous water. By the time I came out of the cove it looked like a river race with every bass boat on the lake coming back to the ramp. I am not sure what was more dangerous, the storm or the boat traffic and kaos of everyone trying to get off the lake.

This is the first I have heard of some one being killed by lightning on the water. I have heard say - dont be out there, it happens - but this is the first direct account I have heard. Thanks for the info!!

Rob, You used to work for the coast guard - A few weeks ago my wife was hurt when we took water over the front while under way. Does the coast guard have any safety regulations governing such a thing?

I still wake up every morning thinking that I need to dump my Ranger....... Really Sucks.....

Dean, lightning strikes on Texas lakes happen every year. It has happened at least 4 times on Lake Fork that I can think of off hand. The number of charred trees on the lake are an indication of the amount of lightning strikes that lake takes.

Dean, all I can tell you from my personal experience is if your rods start humming or your line goes straight up in the air it's time to leave! A big boom is coming next.

definitly gotta be careful out there. If you get caught in a storm your safest bet is to get to the nearest bank and get out of the water.

Considering that the strikes generally leave the persons in the boat dead, I could not say if they were hit directly or if the boat was hit. I have not heard anything else about the other guy in the boat from this last incident that happened on Fork. One guy was killed instantly and the other was injured.

It is some nasty stuff... I am amazed that the other guy in the boat survived.

I saw this thread on another fishing web site and apparently both guys were known around that site. The guy that survived pulled the victim back into the boat. I haven't heard anything about the survivor being injured.

I know I've stayed out on the water before when I should have been on shore. After seeing this story I will start leaving the water a little earlier when I see bad weather approaching.

i hate the lightning
we were on a local lake, and saw a storm building about 20 miles from us. i made the call to the fss to see what the winds aloft were doing. long story short, it started hailing when we got the boat on the trailer 5 min later. It can happen so fast
my fat fingers cant spell

I'll probably turn into a floating turd and Picou will break the knob off my post counter immediately. ATW 2/10/05

I got caught in one on Fork and had to hold my aluminum boat on the riprap because I could not get loaded in time. That was the most protection from the wind and waves I could get to. That was the one time fishing by myself that I pushed the limit on getting to the ramp and it cost me. I cannot count the times that we have loaded the boat and just as we get in the truck the ceiling let loose.
