Allen Wilson, Chris Simek, Mike Picou, Wade Henry and I joined our outdoor host Wes Matthies for a weekend of friendship and good times at the Capote Ranch near Seguin. Wes, Allen, Wade and Mike each put a doe in the cooler and the season's management program is well underway!

Wes fires up ribeyes for Friday night's dinner. Dang good eats right there Wes!

Wes's Mom and Seguin's Mayor Betty Ann Matthis joined us for dinner. Betty Ann's lemon icing cake is to kill for. Too bad PQ can't remember to take it home :-)

PQ strings his doe up on the meat pole as Simek lends a hand.

Looks like a good time. You guys sure ate a lot better than us, but hot dogs over an open fire can taste like steak when you're on a hunting trip.

Congrats to guys who got does. Mike's on a roll. You better slow down or you'll run out of tags before November gets here.
If you're richer than me I think we're related. If you're poorer than me I know we're related.

No tag spent on that hunt. Wes has MLD permits that we used. I still have 4 tags to fill -- not including my turkey tags. :-)

Besides, I am banned from hunting till Wes and I go on our draw hunt at Richland on the 17th where we will use their tags for any deer harvested. Come November I should still have plenty -- no matter how many deer I spine shoot at Richland. :-O
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

I agree that it was a blast and I'm ready for next year already. Awesome pixels Rob as usual. My days at the Capote had me arriving last Wed evening around 6:30 pm. John was in his usual spot: on the front porch and was wondering where I had the beer. Anyone who knows John can appreciate this humor! :-) We sat down and steadily poured back the adult beverages and had good conversation. Wes' cousin Allan showed up later stating he saw a few deer but nothing shot. Thursday morning found me in a pop up on John's feeder. Early I hear several deer walking around behind but obviously they did not like me in the popup and kept blowing at me. Nothing until around 8:45am when a doe and a fawn walk in about 6 yds away eating corn but the larger one will not turn to give me a shot. Suddenly a third doe shows up even closer and I let her have it with a Rocky Mountain Gator expandable. She took off about 30 yds and stood around a while and I saw I hit her a little far back. I hoped the 2" cutting blade would do it's job which it did. Some reason the only picture of my deer that is showing up on my camera is of the BH damage which is a little graphic for this site so I'll leave it off.

Thursday afternoon found me dove hunting with John and what a great experience other than the dove did not cooperate but took some wild shots and missed some easy ones. John has a little different flare to his dove hunting style which I happened to enjoy!

Friday had everyone else show up and great food, conversation, and even a few doe kills took place the rest of the weekend. Overall a very relaxing, fun time. Wes has an awesome place and I just want to thank him for the annual + invite and looking forward to the next one. Thanks Buddy and what an awesome place you have down there!

:-)

I hunted Friday night in a Trophy Den pop-up blind that had a can of Wasp Spray unloaded on the inside walls. Needless to say I had a bad headache, gasped for air and couldn't range very well...I had a darn good excuse.

I need to wash my back pack. I can't git rid of the smell.

She was on the card playing table for a little while but did not see here again the whole weekend. Not sure who took her! :-)
