In the middle of deer season some of us have to draw a line somewhere between awesome fishing or hunting. I broke down this year and re-adjusted my goals to fish more with my son Austin along the coast. We roll down to the 21.1 mile mark at Padre Island National Seashore and setup camp Friday evening. Austin is beat tired from a full week of school and hits the sleeping bag right off the bat. I opt to not yak a bait out by myself knowing rolling off the beach 300 yards at night isn't much fun. I spend the evening surfcasting cut mullet flinging my 11ft Fenwick matched with a smooth spooling Ambassadeur Big Game 7500 CT. Way too many hardheads in the first and second gut and the evening is purely cast, hook-up and another whisker kitty is on. I probably had 10 cats on the beach before calling it quit knowing the coyotes would enjoy the free meal. Sure enough, coyote tracks and no catfish the next morning. Saturday the fishing starts out slow but we keep at it. The surf is running pretty hard and I can't punch out through the 3rd sandbar without rolling. So I work my way up as tight to the backside of the 3rd bar and drop live 10+ inch mullet. After several sets the big rod lights up in a screaming run BIG FISH ON! Austin sets the hook and line peels off the Penn 4/0 Wide for literally minutes as the big fish heads toward Mexico. Austin tires as the big fish never gives him any ground and hands me the rod. I work the big boy and finally get him back to the initial 2nd gut near the initial hook-set area roughly 130 yards off the beach when this black-tip shark clears the water in a low greyhound style leap. Goodness this fish has power and it's been a long time coming. We quickly land our first blacktip, snap a few pics and I walk him back out into the surf line to fight another day. This particular Blacktip had a pair of Remora's riding on his hide and he certainly showed signs of living well offshore. We call it an evening at sundown and settle down to grilled ribeyes and baked sweet potatoes and turn in for an early start Sunday morning. Surf is running and it's too dangerous to yak baits offshore. Sunday morning the winds swing from the North to an Easterly bearing. The seas have laid down somewhat and the third bar only has an occasional set break. I toss the cast net and quickly round up more fresh mullet and head offshore 300 yards with a live foot long mullet. Austin takes up the slack as the spider weight holds the sand and we relax in high anticipation. Roughly an hour later the reel screams and Austin sets the hook home. BIG FISH ON! After a few minutes of peeling line and wild head shaking the shark turns straight toward the beach in a blistering run. Austin thinks he’s lost this fish and I grab the rod and start cranking as hard as I can picking up the slack and bang, he’s still there, shaking his head and cutting back and forth scattering schools of mullet and shad as he bull dogs his way along the 2nd gut. I finally turn him as he heads towards Corpus Christi and work him in to the beach after a fairly long battle. So much line out and we managed to strike a break in having him work hard toward the beach. This shark thrashed so violently on the beach water and sand flies everywhere with water smudging my lens during our photo session. Once again I wade this one out and we watch him swim away to battle another day. Around 1:00 pm with another big mullet soaking 300+ yards off the beach the reel once again screams like no one’s business. I’m up near the dunes by the truck fixing a quick lunch of fajitas and notice Austin down along the surf line with the rod doubled over. I quickly run down and yell “He’s all yours, fight him in and I’ll handle the leader!” After what seems to be an hour, Austin’s beat, the shark is beat and I grab the leader for shark number three. This was a weekend to remember for each of us and the first hook-set to finish for a large shark for Austin as well. For some reason Austin and I simply didn’t think about deer hunting. Till next time - The Zabroky boys.

Thanks guys and let's go down to the coast sometime soon! Redneck88 I know theres a BT out there with your name on him. We got to get you down there real soon. I had another shark rod we didn't even rig up. Not enough folks to keep that circus under control. I know your Dad will keep us in check as he sports the Rainfro look Simek, round up Frank and your Dad and let's just do it. |

Redneck88, if Pop can't find the time we will just have to go anyway. I bet he's ready for the coast pretty darn soon though. Nothing better than a coastal camp scene to recharge the batteries. Mudslick LOL! |

We are going guys, one of these days. I probably will go down next weekend once again. I would have rolled this past weekend but the Park folks forced folks off with the tides into the dunes this past Sunday due to Wilma. I heard some ugly stories of jeeps and stuff getting completely flooded by waiting too long. Once that tide comes up, you have no time to run 20 - 60 miles north bound with no where to run. |
