Not much to tell... I screwed up basically!

I saw this buck cross the jeep trail about 80 yards in front of the blind and I could see that he was a shooter (antler spread wider than the ear tips). I readied my bow as he slowly made his way down my center shooting lane. All of the sudden he looked to my left and started walking towards it. In no time he had closed the gap and was rapidly approaching my last shooting lane with me at full draw. I followed him through the heavy cover with my pin on the vitals the entire time and as he was going through my last shooting lane I let her rip. I was sickened when I saw the arrow go through the gut. It was 8:26am, I immediately picked up the phone and texted Wes that I gut shot an over buck. We decided it best for me to sit in the stand till 10:00am then for me to slip out quietly and vacate the area.

We came back with 2 of the WMA guys about 1:30pm and started looking. I found first blood about 15 yards from where I hit him and that trail played out quickly -- 50 or so yards. The buck made a hard circle as if going back behind the blind to wind the noise and in some snags was where we found the very last spec of blood. We searched all around following heavy trails (and there were a ton of them) looking for blood or deer and it was not to be. We got the approval to bring in a dog and a local man, James Reed, brought his lab out to give it a shot. It was hot and the blood was dry. She never could really establish a trail so about dark we gave up the search.

The biologist and assistant biologist assured me that they would do everything possible to find the antlers over the next couple of weeks and they would call me if they are successful. He even planned to bring out a group of 20 - 30 convicts to grid search for the deer I lost and one that another hunter lost the first morning.

I still have a slight glimmer of hope that I will get the antlers but all said and done, I screwed up. I let the despiration of a harvest make me take a bad shot. I never really got a look at his antlers bacause all I saw was "Shooter" and never looked at the antlers again. I have beat myself up with the "Shoulda & If I had..." Plain and simple, I should never have shot. The arrow had about 12 inches of deep read blood and the fletchings had gut material. Wes claimed in the text messaging that the buck was a mid 130 class buck but as the day progressed he shrank to a 100 inch deer... :-) Wes had watched this buck chase doe on the field that was about 100 yards from my stand location. He watched the buck come into my area.

Anyway, I shot my bow Saturday to make sure it was not shooting to the right from all the 4 wheeler travel but it was dead on at 20 (distance the buck was) so I know the mistake was all mine. I have some pictures of the shooting lanes on the camera that I will post when I get them online.

Thanks to everyone for their help on TBH and in the field. Wes gave up his last hunt to help with the tracking/searching effort -- even after watching a 150 class buck that morning.

I'll get over it, get back at it, and make it count next time.
Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Just one of those things that happens PQ. The buck was in the 120-130 range. I didn't look at him real close because he was chasing some does into me and I thought I was going to get a shot at the buck. I didn't have alot of cover in the tree from the angle they were coming in, so I had to put the binocs down get my bow. The yearling turned and headed back out into the middle of the field taking momma and the buck with her. They then went over to where PQ was.
The other buck that was out in the field was a goodone though. I said 150 class, but I bet I would be low on that score. It was hard for me to judge him because I was having to look through a bunch of branches in the tree I was hunting to see him. The buck PQ shot ran from the bigger buck like a little girl when it came out on the field.

I just wish we would have found the buck. I still believe the deer double backed out on himself but we could just never pick up the trail again.

It definitely happens PQ. It definitely makes things tougher when they are chasing. You did everything you could to find him. Just the way things work out sometimes. Go kill another one quick! :-)

Connie told me that I had my one chance and I told her she was nutts... :-) I almost made the run to Jacksboro yesterday when the second cold front blew in with strong north winds, light rain, and cold temps. It was 35 degrees at the house this morning and my neck swole up... :-)

I'll give it another try and hopefully the next one is over corn standing still... :-)

Hate to hear that Mike. All you can do is get back in the stand and put that shot behind you. I know you'll redeem yourself in no time.

You did what you could PQ and Wes is a fine gentleman as well (in a Convict kinda way :-)).

Maybe you should have grunted to get him to hold? I watch Babe Winklman do it all the time and he pulls it off with perfect hair :-)

Seriously, shake if off, they should find it with the extra man-power if he didn't hit the river.

Hey PQ, just about everyone has been in that situation. It sucks. It sounds like you did your best on the recovery. Hopefully those fellas will find it. Try to put it behind ya and move on.

Sorry to hear about this Mike. Quickest way to get over it is to get one on the ground.

I'll get back out as soon as possible -- read as... when the wife allows it...:-)

I may be able to sneak out this weekened to the lease under the disguise of needing to fill feeders... :-)

Thanks everyone, I'll produce a LDP in the next couple of weeks with the Hoyt just to make sure I can still do it... :-)
