Dean, they are not actually rocks (we just call them rocks) They are small, round, white pieces of cartlidge located behind and above their eyes. My dad used to cut them out and give to us when we were kids. I have some from fresh water drums and wanted to add the saltwater variety, if they exist. Thanks Dru |

Big drum... Never caught one that big for sure. Dru, not too sure about the rocks in the head either. It has been since I was a kid that we kept a drum to eat. Thank you Lord for my family and the waters I get to fish

Dru - I will try to check next time I clean a Red.. This drum was released to help with population controll. According to TP&W Hunting/Fishing regulations guide/manual, Black Drum are supposed to be good eating? I have not tried one before but I might if the right size is landed - maybe 25in? But then again, with all of the shrimp, trout, flounder (to be), red, dorado, snapper, shark, and sand trout I have in the freezer, I do not need any more... I need to eat more fish but I dont really care for it - except for the black tip shark on the grill - that has become my favorite. I will start targeting them on each trip out. I want a 70 - 80 pounder for the freezer to carry me to next summer - before they go away for the winter. I wanted the one that Rob let go - All In A Days Fun!!!

Thanks Dean and Bigun. We don't usally keep them unless they get mixed in with the sandies and/or stripers. the fresh water type don't fight as hard as a red. (I am assumng since I have not caught a red). They usually stay deep and just swim in circles. |

Drum have excellent meat but would not eat one past 25" or so I would not think. Very white flaky meat and can be substituted for crab meat in dips and the sort. Dean, Eat Mo' Fish! It really is a snook!!!!
