Hit PINS once again this weekend. Drifter couldn't go, my son Austin had weekend plans and stayed home, BigP isn't talking to me (just kidding P'ster, let's plan) so I hauled a bud down from Austin who needed a recharge from work and family. He slept through most of the action and didn't catch as single fish.

Hit the 21.1 mile mark and setup camp. Driving conditions were rough and rolling soft sand drifts kept folks thinned way down this weekend. We opted to move down to the 23.3 mile mark after sunup as I eye-balled a rip cutting through the wade cut. Seas Saturday were ripping on the 2nd bar and I rolled twice trying to punch out so I settled in on casting the wade gut and rigging for reds.

Seaweed and debris from the many storms this year has the wade gut too grassy to really cast plugs and jigs so after a couple of hours of steady weed removal I finally settle in and focused my energy on bullreds in the surf.

First red Saturday afternoon. Not a real big red but I was happy enough to finally break the ice. I caught several other slot reds throughout the afternoon into the evening but they really didn't put up much of a fight on the Newell spooled with 30lb Ande.

As my partner slept in all night Saturday, I opted to soak the wade gut on a falling tide. I switch out reels going lighter opting to cast an Abassaduer 7500 CT Big Game spooled with 20, shocked with 50 (6 turns on the spool to take the load during windup) with an 80lb mono leader tied off to a 14/0 circle hook (fish finder style). This setup is a long bomber but fishing 20 lb mono in the surf during long soaks you must think 10 lb test due to the abrasion from shell and weeds. Thankfully I had plenty of 20lb test spooled around 2 AM when my ABU screams at the top of her lungs. FISH ON! This fish has nades and heads off Mexico via the 2nd gut. I finally get him turned and he decides to head to Corpus via the wade gut. After roughly 7 or 8 hard runs in close near the sand, peeling 30 - 50 yards of line each time he gets close to terra firma I finally get him landed.

I snapped this self pic, using stainless steel tank that left some oil rig off the Louisiana coast from Katrina, as a camera stand. 10 seconds isn't a lot of time when your beat tired, wrestling a slick bullred and it's pitch dark.

Sunday rolls around and I can finally get offshore with the yak. After 5 off shore sets I end up with no sharks, bare hook on retrieves and several hard bumps and small runs missed. I suspect small redfish but no hook ups to verify. Soaked skipjack and mullet and didn't have anything live to offer so the baits were literally hammered quickly after taking the plunge. As I soak the shark rig I continue to fish the wade gut. Finally Sunday afternoon I hook the last Bullred of the trip before calling it a weekend at sunset.

When is your next outing? I am there provided I am not moving to Alpine. Have a hot job lead for out there. At least I might be able to hook up with some primo Muley hunting. Only 3 people have applied for the job so far. It is with the General Land Office.
