Took my daughter Rebekah and her friend ? (I'll have to tell you her name later when I remember it) fishing Saturday. ? had never been fishing before nor had she been on the bay. We left the house around 9 and put in around 11. We stopped on the way and cought some large finger mullet. They were a little big for Flounder but I figured I might take them out to the jetties for some bul reds. Bought some frozen shad at the ramp for the reds. Also bought some live shrimp. Went to my favorite flounder holes but they were all taken. We tried some of my not so favorite spots but couldn't lose a shrimp. Worked out thought because we made our lines ready and taught ? how to cast and reel and basically, fish. Backtracked and found one of my favorite spots opened up so we scooted on in. Within minutes I had a 15in flounder on. Next I her ? say "I think something is on my line" so I told her to reel it in! She cought a small flounder. My Daughter Rebekah posed with her for the valued picture.

Now we are all excited. The fish were biting but it was a slow bite. Most of the time we were getting piggy fish stealing our shrimp. We tried the finger mullet but the girls got bored too quickly so we stuck to the shrimp. After a while they wanted to move around a bit so we headed out to the jetties. Turned out that the water was way too rough so we turned around and headed back in. We went by the GYB but nothing but piggy perch. We went back to the other spot and again we were catching small fish but at least something was biting.

Next thing I know ? says "Mr Picou, I think I have something on my line". I looked back and sure enough she did! The rod was nearly laying flat so I told her to hold it up - a few times - and tought her how to work in a big fish.

She went back and fouth for about 10 minutes working it up then watching it run then working it up then watching it run..... fun fun! She was getting tired and she asked me to take it - I said no and let her pass it to Rebekah. Rebkah fought it for another 10 minutes or so before we got to see it roll about 15yds from the boat. As I suspected it was a big black drum. The poor thing was tired and had given up the fight. We landed it, posed for pictures, and tried to let it go - but his swim bladder was inflated. Got to teach the girls about surgery 101.. Popped the bubble and revived it and let it go.

As the sun went out of our sight the sand trout started biting. We were going to leave at 5:00 but the girls really wanted to stay. OK - We stayed until nearly dark and ended up with a small mess of sand trout and 4 keeper flounder up to 3.5lb.

On the way home they both were passed out!!

Awesome writeup and story. Did you catch the black drum down in the ship channel where those warehouses are next to the sulfer place? That looks like were you were fishing and I always see people up in there fishing.

Regarding the Grady - Cannot do it right now. Besides, I have done some more consideration to the cost vs use. I would only go out in 2-3' max and that really limits my days of use for offshore. It would be cheaper to hire a guide and probably more fun too. Regardless, $85K + rigging is out of my range and I am not in a position to buy a bigger truck either. I will just have to wait until I can afford it.:-(

Regarding the location - The sulphur pit is correct.. This time of year there are a lot of fish in that area. We really like sand trout and they really stack up there:-)
