I like mine - I bought it used - but I still like the currado better. You will like it! The casting is awsome and when the drag is needed it is really smooth.

I'm still a tight wad.

I have older calcuttas and a curado but I can't bring myself to spend that much on a reel. Let us know how it works.

Great reels. I have one in the 5:2 gear ratio. I use it for cranking. Cast a mile and the lower gear ratio helps me slow down. You will like it.

I was a luck dog and won one at the Irving Bass Club meeting two years ago. I love it. I use it on my jig rod. You'll dig it :-)

It is some smooth and has a lot better drag than the curado's I've fished. I turned around and bought a curado off ebay also. Good thing I made some dough this weekend.

'Bout the only way I would fish a Diawa is if someone gave it to me. Then I would still be hard pressed to take it out of the rod box when I have 9 shimanos to choose from.

I look forward to hearing your report on the reel Oz if you get one.

I bought a Daiwa Black Max or something like that last year $100 reel. I have had good luck with it but PQ you are right on that it is a step below the Shimano's. It's the Quantum's that I've had ABSOLUTELY NO LUCK with. But a couple of my dad's buddies just love them so maybe I just always got the lemon or they just can't handle saltwater.

Mike, I am a Shimano guy as well but with our new affiliation with Quantum, I am going to give them a serious try. I put together a press release for them about the new 7:1 burner. I talked to Gerald Swindle about it and he had nothing but good things to say. He caught a 12lber out of Amistad using one and said it worked great.

Quantum reels have come a long way over the last couple of years. With the changes that Shimano made to their popular lines of reels and the consistant problems that they are having with them, it may be time for a shift in the market leader of fishing reels if Shimano does not get their problems fixed. Why in the world they would change a completely functional and solid reel is beyond me. I am just glad that I have many good ones already.

If Quantum wants to supply me with a few reels, I would give them a try. But, I could not bring myself to spend any money on them at this point. Do they have anything that compares to the Curado CU-100B?

Becareful what you wish for Mike! It is hard to beat the CU-100. Light weight and feels good in your hand. For a little less money Quantum does have the Acurrist PT™. Same gear ratio and number of bearings. It does weigh more and probably not the same comfortable profile but close. It does have the "flippin switch" of which I am not a fan. http://www.quantumfishing.com/accuristPT_reels.asp
I have a couple of Curados that are at least 10 years old. It will take a lot for me to leave them in the rod box.
I should receive my first order of Quantum reels next week. As soon as I can get out on the water, I will give you a fair and unbiased opinion.
Our Tackle show starts the 17th of this month. They usually have the Curados on sale there for right at $100. Hard to beat at that price.

The flippin switch is actually a bonus to me. I can remember several times that I have had to thumb the reel to set the hook and it has caused some nasty "professional overruns" when I did not thumb it fast enough. If Quantum wants to try and convert me, send them over. :-)

Be careful with the new Curados, lots of people are having problems with them right now. I hope they get their act together and fix these issues. At this point, I would not spend any money on a Shimano until I can be certian they have addressed these issues I have read over the last month.

I'll pass your enthusiastic attitude onto Mark. lol

I'm trying to convert to using only my left hand while flipping but when it comes down to crunch time, I switch back. The problem I have with the Flippin Switch is the way I hold the reel. My thumb rests more on the spool than on the thumb bar. If I practiced more with one, I would probably like it.

I haven't heard any negatives about Shimano. Is it the new direst drive system? If you have a link to something, I would like to read it. e-mail it if you want.

Here are some of the comments I have seen:

quote:

Citica: The high efficiency gears got to the point that I barely had the strength to reel in my spinnerbait, and it pops and crackles inside?

Curado 100: The drag started doing the same thing all my old Quantums did, years ago. It was fine if you pulled slow and steady, but on a hookset, or hard pull, it almost turned freely.

quote:

I have bought two of the 100 sf's... One broke within the first hour of using it. But I do love the other.

quote:

I bought a 7:1 Curado and a 6:1 Citica over the Christmas break and both are having problems. The Curado is becoming ever increasingly harder to turn the handle and even locks up occasionally. The Citica is making a clicking noise every time the line guide reaches a certain spot over the spool.

quote:

My dads new Citica almosts locks up too when reeling in a lure.

It also appears that there have been several returned for these same reasons. Something is not right with the new line of reels and that is too much money to take the risk. I am sure that Shimano will take care of the problems and be back on top, but I would be reluctant to spend the $$$ until I knew they were addressed and resolved.

Are me and my buddy Hank Parker the only people alive who are Ambassadeur fans? Man, give me a 5500C and I'm set. A little heavier, but never ever any problems with them.

I've had other brands, most of which ended up in the trash heap. Quantum was the main offender, the ones I had sucked. I've still got a couple of older Shimanos that were good reels.

But the Ambassadeurs make up most of my arsenal.

Rudey, I will never complain abot ABU's. Probably the most reliable reels made especially for salt water fish. But they just aren't as smooth as these new reels! But on the same note, I'll probably still be fishing with my 15 yr old ABU when I'll be throwing this Shimano Chronarch in the garbage. :-)

Now that's old School Rudey. Big reels and pistol grip rods, Hank is the Man. I can hear the gears working on a couple of my older reels. They screech and squeal with every cast. I just can't get away from the low profile reels. Maybe it's because I feel more cormfortable with something small in my hands. lol

Who was the excellent guide that put you on that fish in your profile pic?

I'm caught between a rock and hard place when it comes down to casting reels. I can't justify a pure freshwater reel when my scene hits the coast way too many times with light lures in the 1/2 ounce range. Line capacity is everything to me along the surf zone and casting the heavier lures there really make the ABU's shine.

Like Rudey, it's hard to replace the reliability of a Swedish built ABU. They really shine on large fish and long runs.
